It will show you time and estimated distance (based on your height I guess) of a run. I use a gps running watch and the miband is fairly accurate but not spot on.
Up until last app update there was also a mode "running helper" which I believe connected to the phones gps and gave a map and more detailed information after a run, but I never used it - required to bring you phone on runs as well.
Yes, all data is managed and viewed through the app Mi Fit. There is also an unofficial app (in beta) that can do a lot more than the official app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.gliderun&hl=en
To sum up, I find the MiBand good as activity tracker and records my overall activity, not accurate enough as training companion for runs. But then I haven't tried the running helper nor gliderun.
Check out Gliderun. It saves your data locally with the option to sync it to the cloud, plus it allows you to control notifications on the band. I know it works with the MiBand 1 & 1S, but I'm not sure if MiBand 2 support has been added yet or not.
For the 1 and the 1S I have used "Gliderun" in the past. It's a MiFit replacement app. And that worked fine. Has notification support, and you can use it to track you, using GPS, during your workout (running, biking, walking, that sort of thing). With the MiBand 1, it used to reset the band completely. Not sure if it does that still. But be forewarned that it might reset your band.
You could also try "Mi Band Notify & Fitness", which is a MiFit companion app. Which offers more flexibility with the band regarding notifications (it supports more than the 4 that MiFit allows and gives you flexibility on the frequency of the vibrate-function) and heart rate monitoring.
I think it has far better step, sleep, and heart rate tracking than the MiFit app. It also allows for custom notifications, however they are not as configurable as Tools & MiBand. Gliderun is free, so you can give it a try and see if you like it, if not you can always purchase Tools & MiBand later.
You need mifit installed. Has auto and manual sync, continuous HR workout tracking. The manual sync really works well for steps in keeping gfit and mifit close.
Also I really like Gliderun. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.gliderun
If you don't like the way MiFit is recording your data I suggest looking at a different app for recording data. MiBand Notify and MiBand Tools only adds additional functionality to the band but doesn't actually change the fact that MiFit is recording all your data.
I've been using Gliderun since April and I've found it provides much more accurate tracking of your steps. It also is able to record multiple sleep cycles during a day regardless of if you sleep during the day or night (this is currently a huge limitation of MiFit and the reason I started looking for other apps). Gliderun also allows you to customize the vibration and led color for notifications from any app on your band. I think the MiBand 1S only has while leds though. It also syncs your data with Google Fit and Fitness Syncer.
As far as heart rate monitoring, I don't have a 1S so I can't tell you for sure how it's working. People have been reporting in the help thread on XDA that it works, but others have reported that it doesn't. I know the author of the app is working on getting the 1S to work better with the app so it's just a matter of time until it's perfected.
I managed to make my band work. Even if I tried to unpair and pair the band with MiFit app, the band would do nothing about steps and sleep, but could be used for notifications. So I tried to use another app and see if it was posible to 'unblock' it, and I actually managed to bring it back to life.
I´ve been unistalling and installing the apps as in theory the band shouldn't been paired with more than one app at a time and didn't want to complicate the situation more. Note that this is how mi band started to work again, but it might not work for others. Shame that the progress of the last 4 days it's been lost...
I have not bought the app but I believe having read that it allows you setting more alarms. I don't know if you have other usecases but I believe Gliderun sports many different features as well.
If you only use three alarms, you should be able to stay with the official app.
I had the same problem after new years day, and post my solution here: https://www.reddit.com/r/miband/comments/3z9dar/mi_band_1s_stuck_doesnt_count_anymore_any_ideas/

1. Uninstall Mi Fit app
2. Install Gliderun app and pair the band with it. ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.gliderun&hl=en ) If the band doesn't show up, first look for it on bluetooth setings and pair it with the phone and then with Gliderun.
3. Uninstall Gliderun, install Mi Fit again and pair the band.

I've read somewhere here that someone managed to login using their number/password instead of email/password. Maybe try that?
In the meanwhile you could always use an alternative app like Gliderun or Gadgetbridge, those two don't require you to login. Eventually when you manage to login you can just start using the official app instead.
Don't forget about the Android app Gliderun. It's got a lot more features than the official MiBand app so it might be overwhelming to some, but I've been using it since April and it is a great app.
If you want to use the official or modified app, you have to set up a Xaomi account and store your information on their servers. Currently the only app that stores information on the phone is Gliderun. It's a really good app that provides a ton of anaylsis based on the data your MiBand collects and it is constantly updated by the developer. I use it instead of the stock Xaomi apps.
If you still have it can you install gliderun and pair it with that, then give us the output of the "Admin" tab for the band? It has all sorts of nice information like firmware, hardware version etc etc. Handy for identifying fakes in the future.
Not sure if it matters to anyone on this thread anymore, but here's a highly rated app I found (in beta) that replaces the MiFit app. It is able to integrate with Google Fit, has more features, and, as a bonus, looks pretty fresh with material design. Check out Gliderun:

I'll have to give it try.

Well it was kind of an accident and I'm not sure if everyone can replicate it but here it is: * I have the tweaked miband app and turned on BLE broadcast in the additional features tab * I downloaded gliderun * go to the sensors/wear tab and go to discover * for me, once the app found the mi band my phone gave me a notification asking me if I wanted to add it as a trusted device
Hope this helped
I also uninstalled the gliderun app afterwards because it is supposed to be a replacement for mifit and will write to the miband. So choose either gliderun or mifit and delete the other app
