That's pretty cool. If I were your kid, I'd be hyperventilating.
About a week ago I started watching the ISS as it passes overhead. I've been using ISS Detector Pro, cuz it went on sale for free. There's a free version, too.
Is sweet.
Fire it up, see when the upcoming Iridium flares, ISS passes, and so on are, save it to your calendar, then open it up 5 minutes before, look at the live track of the satellite over the ground, and it will show you exactly where and when in the sky to look.
It's not perfect, I'd like for it to push notifications to me when events above a certain cutoff are about to happen, and I'd like to be able to use it to identify satellites I see randomly (like how I use flightaware) but it's better than any alternative I've found.
No it isn't visible every evening. There are more parameters for it to be visible, i.e. the sun should be shining on the satellite. That is why possibly the application didn't notify you.
Edit: checked, the app I use did have an entry for 7.20 pm tonight. I use: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runar.issdetector.pro
They also have an ad supported free version.
If you have an android phone. The free app only covers the Iridium constellation and the ISS. Pro version (or IAP) adds amateur predictions.
There's a similar app for the iPhone but I don't have one of those.

Is well worth it. Iridium flares are awesome.
This Android app worked well for me last time. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.runar.issdetector.pro
ISS Detector Pro is what you need.
