This free app teaches katakana and hiragana (you can pick to do one or both) with a flashcard system. Easy way to learn/practice in spare moments throughout the day.

Pro tip for English speaking people who don't want to put in a lot of effort but want to get the "gist" of written Japanese: Learn katakana. Katakana is the angular script used in Japanese for loanwords and most of them are from English. Pretty easy to learn, you can do it just by playing a game on your smart phone like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.zehfernando.KanaMind&hl=en
I used this app to learn hiragana and katakana

Play around with it for a bit, and try writing them down a few times. Writing them will help to solidify their shape in your memory.
And as much as I appreciate you want to focus on hiragana right now, please remember that natural Japanese uses a combination of the 3 writing systems and you will eventually need to learn to read them all together. You'll soon learn that it's often easier to read a sentence that contains Kanji because they help to break up the words in the sentence(nouns, pronouns, verbs); remember there are no spaces in Japanese!
If you have android, this one is pretty cool https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.zehfernando.KanaMind&hl=en_GB
There are a lot of apps that can help you learn the katakanas and hiraganas. I've first used Kanamind, which works as a game (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.zehfernando.KanaMind&hl=fr&gl=US) and then Kana (https://apps.apple.com/fr/app/kana-hiragana-and-katakana/id1454200955?l=en) to really learn how to write the kanas, as opposed to just recognize them. I'm sure there is plenty of other options though.
I will never not recommend Kana Mind. I learned both alphabets in less than two days because it's just so damn effective.
When I said links, I just meant the list of handy threads for MHX. I learnt my Kana and most of my Kanji so far using Smartphone apps. Kana mind was what I used to complete my Kana, but I used a few other apps before that. I use Obenkyo to learn my Kanji. The Japanese dictionary I use is jisho.org. And this is all stuff I was learning anyway, I've not actually played any Japanese games besides MHP3rd, for which I have the English patch anyway.
Hiragana is the same character set as Katakana, but just looks different. It's kinda like uppercase and lowercase characters of the English alphabet. Hiragana and Kanji are used for Japanese text, while Katakana is normally used for names and kana transliteration of English.
On the contrary, I hardly ever hand write anything, I type 100% of my kanas and kanji using the Google IME on desktop and the equivalent Android keyboard on mobile. I still took the time to write a bit at first to learn the stroke order and I can hand write when needed, I just have never needed to.
When initially learning, I used the time I would usually spend doing something meaningless (like checking Facebook or reddit) to instead drill kanas. If I was at work and waiting for a build of our software to complete, I would use sites like http://katakana.training or http://hiragana.training to fill the time. Sitting on the toilet? Kana Mind for reading and writing the kanas.
In my opinion, it really doesn't matter how you learn them, just do it in some way that gets the job done.
