I worked in a plastic factory as a line operator. There was so much basic math I was doing to make my job easier, that I made an Android app to do it faster. I called it LineMonitorBot. I would never miss a skid coming off because my app would vibrate in my pocket when it was time. I never had to weigh a roll core because my app could figure it out from the length. I could take my rolls off exactly when they weighed 250#, because my app could calculate the diameter needed using the plastic width and density. I typed the same numbers into my app that everyone else typed into a calculator to do their paperwork, but mine saved them and used them to predict all kinds of other things. I also put in a button to launch a flashlight app which was very handy for checking dark water tanks and stuff.
I was positive that automating this kind of thing would be the factory productivity enhancer of the future, but a factory is an institution and can't change willy nilly. They banned cell phones on the floor, and I decided to try getting a job as a programmer, but that will probably never happen.
