Yep. In most cases you can just install Nine Email Client (I think they have an iOS version as well). I didn't like the idea of some admin being able to wipe personal phone in return for me using mobile email.
Yes, I use the Microsoft RDP Android app. Civ works perfectly for an office time killer. We have been doing a large Thin Client deployment at work, it is a click a button wait 20 minutes for a progress bar type of install. So I have had a lot of down time lately. Here is the app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.android You will have to open up the remote desktop port 3389 and figure out what your public IP is. Tutorial here, https://www.geek.com/chips/how-to-setup-a-remote-desktop-and-connect-1515149/
I recently updated my windows to the Fall Creators' Update, and with it MS has disabled SMBv1 (following WannaCry and Petya ransomware attacks).
Most file managers such as Solid Explorer, ES File Explorer et cetera can now not access Windows SMB shares since these app use (now obsolete) SMBv1. I've tried almost all file managers on the Play Store following this, and I've only found ONE that uses SMB v2 to access Windows shares: File Explorer by Nextapp Inc.
Just a heads-up, so you don't waste time trying to fix it thinking there's something wrong with updated windows.
Any exchange mail client, Nine. Loaded with features, been using it for years for my work email. Best feature is segregated data, you can keep the data completely within the app, and an exchange remote error would only wipe the app data and not your phone.
FX file manager. Everything is available for free, you only need to purchase it if you need some additional functionality like cloud integration. And unlike solid the color schemes, themes are free.

I'm using OpenVPN to pfsense and then Microsoft Remote Desktop Link to android store app. Its still a well thought out and robust client.
I use Inbox for my Google account, and Nine Mail for Outlook/Office 365 work stuff. IMO, Nine is the best app for Exchange/Office 365 email. It does cost $9.99 (on time fee), but it is worth it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3&hl=en
I’d also recommend using the Authenticator app over text:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-authenticator/id983156458?mt=8
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azure.authenticator&hl=en_US
This is app by that guy:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
This is my app, and i am willing to share source code of my app to show that SDK's are from Samsung's website. Here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.packagedisabler
If you use Exchange/Office 365/Outlook, then without a doubt, Nine is the best email client on Android. Full featured and highly customisable. I use Nine for six different email accounts and it's without a doubt, money well spent.
FX File Explorer is the best. It's also got a root add-on, and is completely free with no ads. The pro key just provides extra features like cloud and network storage mounting, Bluetooth file browsing, and file browsing over WiFi.
Amaze and FX File Explorer. I like Amaze since it's open source. If you don't care about the open source aspect, then FX is probably the best out there. I've tried Solid Explorer, and I like it a lot, but apart from encryption, I find FX better in every other way.
I personally use Nine Email (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3) with my exchange account. It is probably one of the best exchange clients I’ve ever used on Android and I’ve been using Android since the OG Droid. It integrates calendar and contact data with the stock android ones without issue. It also doesn’t send and store your exchange password onto someone else’s server, which Outlook Mobile did.
The only downside is that a license costs $14.99, but there is a two week trial that you can use to see if it is worth it. They also do run frequent sales that usually bring the price down to ~$7. I personally say spend the $14.99 for it as it blows every other client out of the water, but I do recommend trialing it first before you purchase.
So I just found Wire last week, and it's awesome. I was super big on Telegram but there's a circlejerk here about "they're not secure bla blah" so I went ahead and tried every encrypted app. Signal is nice but only 1 device, super meh. I'm honestly still trying to find what's the catch with Wire and I can't find it. Works everywhere, and everything is encrypted. The UI is super clean and responsive, also.
FX Explorer is a brilliant alternative. It has a pristine UI, in-app "multi-window" support, and is free. I couldn't ask for a better file explorer.
Edit:Play Store Link
My favorite app is FX
FX File Explorer features a Material Design UI and new ways to transfer your files between devices and computers:
i've always used FX File Explorer, myself. Bought the Plus and Root addons for it. It's one of the first things I install on any new device or ROM change.
I still prefer FX File Explorer. Great replacement for the classic root explorer and has a nice material theme and some additional features (over root explorer, solid explorer likely has these as well) I need like browsing SMB shares.
Since the birth of the Samsung moment, I've used every file Explorer app that you can think of and I finally settled with FX Explorer. Best looking and most functional imo.
I also deleted my account today and after doing some research switched to AquaMail cause it doesn't store your passwords/emails in the cloud and has a ton of configuration options. (You'll need to buy pro that's 4.95 to remove "sent from AquaMail" signature and be able to add more than two accounts)
This is app by that guy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler You can see that it is recently posted to Google Play and adress is same that was on his old account. Which was banned recently by Google.
This is my app, and i am willing to share source code of my app to show that SDK's are from Samsung's website. Here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.packagedisabler
Its similar to Authy but from Google with limited features.
I have recently moved to Microsoft Authenticator and its also good alternative with backup and restore option. It additionally have option to approve login through notification for Outlook sign-ins.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.azure.authenticator&hl=en_US
Adhell was taken out of development, as was Adhell 2, however BK Package Disabler on the Playstore for 1.49 can disable any app at all (even ones that are needed for functionality. Be extremely careful). Does not require root. The original app, Package Disabler Pro, is a bit more buggy and not updated as often. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
There was also a project called SABS, however Samsung decided to be a dick and call it off, which may be what happened to Adhell.
File system as in your file manager? If so try "File explorer" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx or "Solid explorer" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2
Both offer what I think you're looking for. They require the paid versions after the trial is done though.
Edit: Supplied wrong link for file explorer, fixed.
He literally just said he doesn't want to use Solid Explorer? I use the free version of FX. It does what I need it to, no complaints. Also has a free Root add-on. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx
Edit: I uninstalled Solid Explorer a few weeks ago for the same reason. I get that they're using it to validate a license, but I'm not giving full Phone permissions just for that.
Mainly because nothing is saved in the cloud. I use it for all my imap accounts. I think it works with exchange; I do not know how well though. There a lot options for the app along with settings for each account you add.
I've always been a fan of FX for File Exploring on Android. Bought the Plus license and Root module awhile back, and it has been tremendously versatile and useful over the years.
Probably the best file manager on Android, been using it for years. Switched from Solid explorer back during its Holo days to this, never looked back.
Pretty much all of what you are talking about is called bloatware and it's why more and more people are steering clear of buying phones through a carrier. Samsung and your carrier get kickbacks for installing 3rd party software and making it non-removable. That sucks, and it's not an "android" problem it's a carrier/manufacturer problem. You can buy directly from samsung and get the unlocked version and it comes with much less software, but there will still be a few issues.
For a solution, there are apps like these that can disable apps (be careful on what apps you disable though, you can mess up parts of the phone, follow a list. You can try to root your device and remove the software or try a custom ROM. In the future vote with your wallet and buy a phone that doesn't have bloatware.
I use Nine (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3&hl=en) and it does this. It sandboxes the email account so that only the application can be affected by server side policies. It's also $5 off right now.
EDIT - It originally said $5, it's really $5 off.
Check out Aquamail I have been using it for over a year really customizable love the swipe delete or un-read easy to set up. give it a shot.
It is the best one out there. I paid for it, no regrets.
Here is their website and here is a link to Google Play Store.
Pretty happy with Nine for the last few years.
Attachments are not auto-downloded for me, but I'm not sure if that is a quirk of attachments, or a limit due to my configured message download size.
FX is a similar replacement on the Play Store -- it has some addons if you want FTP or other networking stuff: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx&hl=en_US
If you just want to browse local files on your device, here's an open source alternative called Amaze (on F-Droid): https://f-droid.org/packages/com.amaze.filemanager
You can setup RDP so that you can control your PC from you phone from anywhere in the world.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.android&hl=en_GB
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=android.androidVNC&hl=en_GB
If you want to get around it, Nine is a little pricey but sets permissions so they can only nuke the email account you add and not your whole device. May or may not break your university TOS.
BTW note that like the app store permissions, it only lists the stuff they can do, not stuff they're actively doing.
I use FX File Explorer. Idk if it's the best, but it does everything I could ever need and it's easy to transfer files from all my other devices.
Take a look at Nine. It definitely isn't cheap, but I heard a lot of great things from it, and I liked it myself when I was using it on a trial run.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
Look at Nine. This is one of the best Android Apps I've ever encountered. It does implement native ActiveSync so your credentials stay on your device.
/edit: sorry, did not notice it was already recommended further down before posting
After Touchdown got bought by Symantec years ago they pretty much stopped doing updates, I've switched over to using Nine Mail which both looks nicer and is actually under active development too:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
That sort of scenario is exactly why I use Nine Mail for Exchange connectivity, instead of relying on Android's built-in support. They can still issue the remote wipe command, but it only affects that one app (which encapsulates corporate data)... leaving my personal apps and data intact.
For what it's worth, this sort of thing can arise without you turning in notice as well. Someone else leaves the company or loses their phone, for example, and the Exchange administrator accidentally sends the command to the wrong device.
I use the paid version of Nine. I have three office365 accounts I use it for and one of those accounts has access control enforced. I really like the app, even if it was relatively expensive.

I am a bot | Proof: Beep Boop Beep Boop | Please direct all questions elsewhere
FX File Explorer can archive files to Zip, Tar, GZip, BZip2, and 7-Zip.
I don't know if it could be considered the 2nd best, but I have been using it for half a year and find it to be a capable file manager.
For anyone interested in a replacement, I've been using FX File Explorer recently. Very modern UI and has tons of very powerful features. Tabbed browsing, side-by-side view, network filesystems, etc.
I'll second QuickPic; I just discovered it last night. It's better than the Photos app because it supports folders and is really fast. (I think it does aggressive caching.) It also supports Moments without requiring Google+ sync. It's similar to the Motorola Gallery, though maybe not for many good reasons. I like the square thumbnails better, and appreciate that it leaves my notification bar alone. Another neat feature is the option to ignore the rotation lock mode.
Things I don't like about it:
Now, if only I could post app reviews without Google+.
For what it's worth, for my file explorer, I'm using FX File Explorer; it seems fine, although some of the advanced features people keep mentioning from ES File Explorer aren't present (Network/cloud features are part of FX Plus, though, which I don't have). If you care, FX is material design, and looks pretty good (this was a factor for me; the screenshots of ES looked rather ugly/cumbersome).
Try Genius Scan and you'll never want to go back.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thegrizzlylabs.geniusscan.free
I use 4 accounts regularly and purchased Nine a couple years ago and have not regretted it. It's pricey iirc but definitely worth it, especially if you have any exchange accounts.
If you use the app Nine as your Exchange client on your phone there's an option to sync your calendar into the default calendar.
It's one of the best email clients out there.
Microsoft have released an official Remote Desktop client for Android.
It's not available for the TV, but if you can get ahold of the APK, either by installing it onto a rooted phone and using adb
to pull it out, or finding it on apkmirror or something, you can use adb
to install it to the Shield.
You can then launch it with an app such as Sideload Launcher when you need.
As a bonus, because it's not a TV app, you can control the mouse using the gamepad's right thumbstick (works on any sideloaded non-TV app).
I really like Nine for Android. It costs a little bit of money after the 1-week free trial, but it handles the Office 365 email and calendar the best out of all the apps I've tried.
I switched from ES Explorer to FX Explorer which is very nice, also heard good things about Solid Explorer, you can try both and choose whichever you like the most.
AquaMail
Don't forget to disable "Send Usage Statistics" in settings, if you don't want AquaMail to collect any data from you.
I've been quite happy with FX File Explorer. Add FX+ ($2.99) for network filesystem support. Since the last file explorer debacle, they seem to have started advertising no ads/no tracking/made in USA in their app description.
Depending on your work email system, you can sandbox their permissions if you use Nine -- I've used it with exchange and google apps, and it doesn't make policies invade your phone and sandboxes a remote wipe to just the app data.
I would recommend using the app Nine for work accounts. It's a great mail app that sandboxes your corporate account, so the security policies only get enforced on the app rather on your whole phone. It syncs everything - mail, calendar (shows up as another calendar in the Google app), contacts, notes. I came across this looking for a solution to the same problem on my Moto X 2nd Gen and it worked like a charm.
It costs some money (you probably have $50 Google Play credits to spend anyways, right?), but is totally worth it. Have been using it for 1-2 years now and haven't looked back.
Is there a known issue with Nine Exchange? As far as I can tell it's using the normal authentication methods without any passthrough.
I don't see it in the roadmap anywhere, but they just added the ability on iOS earlier this year, so you would hope Android would follow at some point. As an alternative I use Nine.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wire
If you use the website you don't even need to use a phone number to register. While using it on the mobile, just don't give it a contacts permission.
>Someone make a messaging app that isn't white, bubbly, and friendly and I might consider it.
Wire. Encypted, cross-platform and feature-rich, but looks simple and has a dark theme (in settings).
It is hands down the best Exchange/O365 e-mail client there is and its main feature is exactly what you are looking for: Instead of locking down your entire phone with a PIN (if your company forces that on you) you can just lock down the app with a PIN and it's all good. It will not alter anything on your phone, every security feature lockdown is confined to the app itself.
It's pretty expensive for an app, but imo worth every cent. I think you can download it for free as a trial.
Likely this is your employer's IT security policies at play. In order to access the confidential information of the enterprise, most IT security departments want the right to wipe your phone remotely should it get lost (or your employment ends). It's not unreasonable.
You have two options to deal with this. The first is to use Secure Folder and connect your calendar within Secure Folder to your work exchange server. It's the same permissions, but they only apply to the Secure Folder and would not apply outside the Knox sandbox (you can set Secure Folder to allow your normal calendar to read the Secure Folder one). The second choice is to use an app called Nine which has an application level security model that would give your enterprise IT the ability to only wipe the app's data and not your phones. It's a fantastic app, but not free and probably not worth it if you're only wanting to sync the calendar.
Nine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
Tip from a fellow first time Samsung user: you can use a package disabler application to disable the Samsung keyboard (granted you have the one you want to use installed and in-use). This app seems to be the best choice at this time.
Aqua Mail has everything you're looking for except for different notifications for different contacts(even if it's there, idk.... maybe I missed it.)
But you've got to dive deep into settings to set up Aqua Mail the way you want it to be.
Btw after setting up the first account, goto settings and disable "Send usage statistics" if you don't want them to collect any sort of data from you.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kman.AquaMail
If you are using Exchange for Work or Office 365, check out "Nine Email". It's a fantastically Material designed app with a ton of features.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3&hl=en
I use Nine client on Android (one time charge of $10, but well worth it). It gives you the same colored flags that you see in Outlook.
Get him a Samsung S8 and install Nine and he'll be happy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
if you can, use Nine instead for Exchange email. I use it for my work.
Looks and works so much better (for me and many others), and it has an option to only set the policy on an app-level instead of device.
Yes, however it's for samsung only.
I use this one tho.
Nine e-mail app. Have try few of email apps, but this one is only that is good for business/private e-mail. It doesn't support IMAP. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3&hl=en
I tried using the gmail app for my work Exchange email, and didn't like it. I have been using Nine and really enjoy it. Note: It's not cheap, however. $10 after trial.
Ok. Lockscreen, a bit more complecated IMO. First of all go to http://widgetlocker.teslacoilsw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Invisible-Tabs.wltheme.zip, open it with Widget Locker and choose 'Install only', then unpack all files so you have a folder (all on phone, if you need App that can do it use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx&hl=pl for example). Than launch Widget Locker and clear the screen. In top-right corner there is a small white button, that's settings, open it. Go to Look & Feel/Layout and resize by pulling those 2 arrows so those rectangles take whole screen, then uncheck Automatically determine grid size and change it to 6 rows x 5 columns, press save. Go to Look & Feel/Background Tint and set it to whatever you like (I use 3). Go to Advanced and 'Enable' Widget Overlap.
Go back so you see Wallpaper and white settings button again. Hold long anywhere, choose Widget -> Zooper Widget 5x1 resize it to full screen again, press back button (it hides, swipe a bit from bottom), click on widget now, choose sdcard, nms lock, go back. Lockscreen should look right now, but we are missing slider for unlock. Resize Zooper Widget from top a bit and move it to top of the screen. Long press under Zooper Widget and choose Add Slider (or something like this, I don't remember). Save it in top left corner. Reposition it to bottom of the screen then long press on it and choose edit. Pick Invisible Tabs from first menu. Now slide the unlock button, go to Icon, choose Files and find the unpacked folder, in it search for android-left-normal and use it. Press the middle button and choose disable, slide right button and choose disable. Confirm in top left corner. Resize Zooper Widget to full screen. Everything should be done now ;)
not free, but i really like Nine I use this app for work and it supports everything i've tried to use so far on mobile. (OOO, dnd, etc)
If you still have physical access to your Sony phone, FX can copy its APK so you can pass it onto other devices, like your Samsung. No root required.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx
There are better file management apps than FX, this is what I'm using to transplant the Xperia Japanese Keyboard from X1 to X1III. The latter doesn't have it preinstalled.
I used File Commander for years and currently using Solid Explorer for almost 2 years. Both have good UI (to me).
I use FX File Explorer, with it you can set up a temporary WebDAV that anyone with the link and password can access and get whatever from your device.
If both devices have FX, they can also transfer with "FX Connect".
I use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thegrizzlylabs.geniusscan.free&hl=cs
Not sure about ads because I'm using system-wide adblocker, but it's really good at automatic scanning even in batch - you just point your phone to the scanned page and it will automatically scan, crop and enhance it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
I switched to this after I found out Touchdown was being eol'd. I believe it will give you what you are looking for. I have fingerprint and face set up for my phone and a pin for Nine. I'll try to answer any questions you may have.
The outlook client you want is Nine. Good features, good formatting, rock solid, even supports multiple Exchange accounts going to different servers (or the same one).
FX File Exporer with privacy - Very underrated explorer and file manager. Its an excellent app with a really cool looks and design. Give it a try. I would recommend purchasing as well.
Nine Email
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninefolders.hd3
Seems to check all your boxes. I use it for exchange, but it supports IMAP as well.
Firstly I'd use
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.fx
It has a cleaning wizard that shows you duplicate files and big files.
Secondly https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd
Shows which apps are using up a lot of space
play around with the view, full size/cache only etc
I'm talking about this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.android
That's the same client that comes by default on Windows. The Remote Desktop Client which is what I think you are saying your wife is using, when you say RDC.
That will allow you to connect to Windows servers. It can also be used to connect Linux remote desktop servers if they are set up to allow that protocol, we have a couple at work set up like that. For the most part I just ssh into our Linux servers though. I primarily use RDC to manage our Windows servers.
Thank you
To sum up what everyone posted here....
It's not cheap, but it's worth it. Excellent email app. Constantly improved. Try the free two week trial
According to this older post concerning My Knox (the precursor to Secure Folder), the OP got an answer from Samsung support claiming only the Secure Folder would be wiped. https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/78913/can-microsoft-exchange-activesync-in-knox-container-still-wipe-my-device
I have my work Exchange account setup on my personal phone in Secure Folder, and I hope this is true. You can also try Nine, a pretty highly regarded Exchange client which sandboxes the device admin/remote wipe into the application context. It's $14.99 US, but by all accounts I've seen most folks consider it worth it.
You can disable bloatware using a package disabler: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler&hl=en
But I have to ask, what's the point in buying a Galaxy S7 then disabling all the features? Why not just keep the Nexus 6P.
If you have another Android phone, running KitKat or higher, you can install Google's controller emulator on it and use it as a Daydream controller. https://developers.google.com/vr/daydream/controller-emulator I also had to enable the Developer Options setting in the Daydream app (press "Version" 7 times) and enable "Controller emulator device." I recommend placing some tape on the emulator phone screen so you can feel where the different buttons are.
YMMV but I also use the "Play Cardboard" app in order to use my GearVR headset instead of purchasing the Daydream headset (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en). I also enabled the "Skip VR Entry Screens" option to bypass the "insert phone into Daydream compatible headset" splash screen. Everything works, but man, my S8 got hot faster than in GearVR apps.
I use FX File Explorer and like it a lot. Used Solid Explorer before, but can't get it to recognize the license I bought years ago, so I just don't use it anymore.
After getting the update to Android Marshmallow it stopped working for me. I emailed the developers multiple times with no answer.
I gave up and switched to a different app. I now use BK Package Disabler which works great. I do miss the Tasker support that Package Disabler Pro had.
BK Disabler does have a list of "suspected bloatwear" that you can add apps to that list or remove them if you don't think it's bloatwear and a function to "Disable all bloat" and "Enable all bloat" at once.
For some reason they keep disappearing and stop working. I guess someone found a way to make a buck. The one I have that still seem to be working is named Play Cardboard
I wanted to buy an app last week on the Google Play Store. It was R33. I tried the trial first, liked it and yesterday it was R28. So I bought the app and a doughnut.
This should still be working if you're on 6.01, but if you're on 7.0 you might have to resort to disabling the Gear VR service manually using Package Disabler Pro or something similar.
What are people still doing with the Cardboard platform these days anyway? I ask because I often see people resorting to an inferior Cardboard experience only because they don't realize that there's a way to do the same thing on the Gear VR platform, and better (with a few exceptions perhaps).
If you download a file explorer, like FX File Explorer, and go to directory:
/data/app
you can find all of the user-installed apps on your Android device. If you find the folder for the app, go into the folder and you will find a "base.apk." This is the app and you can long-press on it to share it to Google Drive, email, or what have you. I can further assist if my instructions need more clarification. Just comment below.
