If you have another Android phone, running KitKat or higher, you can install Google's controller emulator on it and use it as a Daydream controller. https://developers.google.com/vr/daydream/controller-emulator I also had to enable the Developer Options setting in the Daydream app (press "Version" 7 times) and enable "Controller emulator device." I recommend placing some tape on the emulator phone screen so you can feel where the different buttons are.
YMMV but I also use the "Play Cardboard" app in order to use my GearVR headset instead of purchasing the Daydream headset (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en). I also enabled the "Skip VR Entry Screens" option to bypass the "insert phone into Daydream compatible headset" splash screen. Everything works, but man, my S8 got hot faster than in GearVR apps.
For some reason they keep disappearing and stop working. I guess someone found a way to make a buck. The one I have that still seem to be working is named Play Cardboard
This should still be working if you're on 6.01, but if you're on 7.0 you might have to resort to disabling the Gear VR service manually using Package Disabler Pro or something similar.
What are people still doing with the Cardboard platform these days anyway? I ask because I often see people resorting to an inferior Cardboard experience only because they don't realize that there's a way to do the same thing on the Gear VR platform, and better (with a few exceptions perhaps).
There's also an app that let's you pick gearvr or cardboard as the default that should work pretty good. I think this is the one I got: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en
Use this app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
You can even create a widget to switch between cardboard and gearvr mode without even opening up the app.
> Play cardboard apps on Gear VR is gone from the store though.
You can't see this?
As for Package Disabler Pro, I'll go check its functionality right now and get back to you.
Regular USB tethering doesn't work with Gear VR. If you have decent router, Wi-Fi mode still might work okay as long as you don't set bitrate/quality too high.
If you want to go tethered, you have three options.
You can use app similar to this one to toggle between true Gear VR mode and Cardboard mode (Gear VR as viewer only, no Gear VR sensor data will be used). There are free alternatives to the linked app but you usually need to download them off unofficial sites and I haven't tested any of them lately so I don't know which one would work since those types of app often need to be updated when Samsung changes something in OS.
You can use any other cardboard viewer so your Gear VR USB plug won't trigger Gear VR mode.
(Latest Gear VR and S8 only). You can buy USB-Ethernet adapter. This is further described here.
I use the GearVR version from Sideload VR, but if you want to disable Oculus software just purchase/use Play Cardboard on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
I have a Gear, for videos, resolution is definitely better as well as video quality. You have to buy a third-party app to watch Youtube 360 videos as that uses Cardboard and there's no official Gear YT app available, but it's inexpensive.
Slightly related, there's also official Netflix and Hulu apps on Gear if you have a subscription to either and want to watch movies and shows privately on the go. I also have a third-party app allowing you to watch regular YT vids in a cinema and it's quite good.
CB enabler doesn't seem to exist (at least not in uk) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en this seems to be the only one that works without root. is this the one you use?
What apps are you messing with that are so important that they've distracted you from exploring the Oculus ecosystem instead?
Anyway, if you really want to mess with Cardboard stuff, you can disable the Gear VR service using an app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en
You can Run any Cardboard apps and games on your GearVR headset by using this tool https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr After install it, switch to Cardboard mode and the phone now work without Oculus interface
Here is solution, switch between Cardboard apps and Gear VR apps with only ONE TAP, Now you can Play Cardboard apps (games) on Samsung GearVR headset, very easy to use. Try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
I've only tried this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
If you search for "how to run cardboard apps on gear vr" you will find alternatives, tutorials, etc.
However, I hope to have a GearVR version of iVRy out in the coming weeks, just been working through the initial Android teething issues.
VReleased is my patreon and a friend if you don't know . I know sideload very well . I don't propose sideload VR because i ask my users to use gear vr to cardboard https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr work well with any samsung phone.
Works great. No need to choose unless you decide to use the gear vr headset -- then you'll want a program to disable the oculus stuff from coming up. Or course if you use the GearVR headset, you'll need to get a compatible daydream controller.
Hi,
yes, you can download an app off the playstore that will stop the Gear VR service. For example this one here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
Then you can use the GearVR as a cardboard headset. Just have to find the GearVR QR code for the right optical settings. Then you can start the Daydream App.
However, as I say in the video: you will get the best Daydream results with the Daydream View.
You'll need either buy a controller or emulate one with a second Android device. You can also enable "Skip VR Entry Screens" to use a different headset. I assume the Daydream headsets have an NFC tag in them that it looks for.

you need this app. The headset is made to work with gear vr only but you can use this workaround. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en
gear vr is a lot better than cardboard vr though.
There is. This worked on my S8.

You can run any Cardboard game (app) on Play Store in your Gear VR with this tool https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr . It help you can disable Oculus from auto lauch
Download This or try this and disable "gear vr service"
Looks like it might not support the S8 yet, but there is an app that worked with other samsung phones. Might want to reach out to the devloper and see if S8 support is forthcoming: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
Link to article discussing it: http://www.vrheads.com/google-cardboard-apps-work-great-your-gear-vr-now
There are cardboard enabler apps in the Playstore which do disable the Oculus service without the need for root.
Like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
Not sure if they work on Android Nougat tho. If it doesnt work, then you can get a refund within 10 minutes i believe.
Is it even compatible with the Gear VR? I believe it's designed for the Cardboard and you need something like this.
When you put your phone into GearVR, maybe HomeKey button was pressed, so it launch "Google search app". There is another tool on Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr . It have "Hardware Disabler" function. Help you can disable(enable) Home Key button before put your phone into GearVR
The solution is install 2 apps: [Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR] https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr to play many FREE Cardboard apps on Google Play And [Gamepad for VR] https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.gamepadforvr a vitual controller to help you control VR games via Bluetooth
I know the way run Cardboard apps on Gear VR by download this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
The is one way to run Gear VR app on Cardboard with Samsung device. You need to install SideloadVR app (on Google Play) and you can install some Gear VR apps from SideloadVR market. Then turn on [Gear VR Developer Mode] on Samsung devices. Finally, you can run gear VR apps out side the Gear VR headset
May be your "Gear VR service" was disabled by other Samsung Package Disabler app, so you need to enable "Gear VR service" of old Package Disabler app before install new Package Disabler app Try to download "Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR" on Google https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
For Gear VR lovers, you can run Cardboard apps on Gear VR by temporarily disable the [Gear VR Service]. On Google Play, this app can do it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr WITHOUT ROOT
Gear VR, hands down. You don't need to spend $85 on the 2017 version with the controller. The 2016 version will work fine and it's only $36. Even if you want the controller ($17.50) it's still cheaper than the 2017 version.
I also recommend this case. It protects very well and has room for the Gear VR, the controller, and a SteelSeries Stratus XL controller.
Note: to use the S8 and Gear VR with Google Cardboard you will need an app called Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR, which costs $1.99. By default, Samsung phones will automatically launch the Oculus app as soon as you insert them into the Gear VR which prevents you from playing Cardboard apps. This app temporarily disables the services that cause this and allows Cardboard apps to launch as normal. However, note that you'll need to switch modes back to Oculus before those apps will work again. Also note that setup is fairly complex, though easy if you follow the instructions carefully.
Good luck!
You can use app like this (I haven't tried that one, I already owned Package Disabler Pro which works as well) to stop GearVR / Oculus Home from opening when you insert the phone, and use this cardboard app, VNC Remote Desktop.
It works ok :). There used to be some options on SideloadVR, not sure if there still are: http://sideloadvr.com/
You could use Riftcat's VRidge (through Sideload VR, it makes the GearVR emulate a steam VR headset) and an app on the desktop like Virtual Desktop. I've done this before and it works great :). So does steam theater and vridge for 2d games.
I just started trying these two: PPSSPP - Playstation portable - https://forums.oculus.com/vip/discussion/26990/ppsspp-vr-playstation-portable-emulator
FPse - Playstation one - http://www.roadtovr.com/fpse-android-playstation-emulator-google-cardboard-vr/
You'll need an app that switches off the Samsung VR app that runs when you plug into the headset. I have good luck with this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en
Question for OP: Why are you looking for cardboard experiences you can use on the S7 rather than Gear VR experiences specifically designed for the platform and support that ? I ask because most cardboard experiences are designed for the lowest common denominator (i.e. assuming all you have is a barebones supporting phone and the actual cardboard housing), whereas the Gear VR platform is more comfortable, has more controls, and supports a Bluetooth controller.
Or do you not yet have a Gear VR? If not, consider picking one up as they're under $40 and offer an excellent experience. Note that the Bluetooth controller will add another $20 unless you buy a package that includes both. You don't need the 2017 version; the 2016 version will work fine with your phone. Just make sure it comes with the Micro USB adapter or you'll have to source that separately. (Mine is the 2016 version and came with both.)
The Gear VR will open an entirely new library of experiences to you and can also support Cardboard apps by using this $1.50 app.
If you're still looking for information on this I would recommend using the Google VR SDK, Unity and Blender. There's no reason you can't use the Oculus SDK for the GearVR in Unity instead. But with a Google VR app you can run the software on any phone. (You can also get an app to allow Cardboard on Gear VR, which I use with my GearVR and S6)
You can probably whip something up in a few minutes. The rough steps are as follows:
1) Create a UV unwrapped sphere in Blender (but with inverted normals)
2) Create a Unity project
3) Import Google VR SDK package, Blender file and all images you want to apply
4) Add GVR viewer to camera, add UV Sphere to scene (with camera in center)
5) Add one of your images as a material to the UV Sphere, preferably using emission and not diffuse material style.
6) Run Unity Game to test Google VR
From here you'd need to write some C# code to switch/modify the materials on the UV Sphere for images. How you want to handle the interaction is up to you. If you use Gaze based interaction you can build a menu to cycle through images as you see fit. You chould also set up an even trigger so a user only needs to use the magentic button for input for Cardboard. Which would make the viewer more like a View Master. Just switching an image each time you hit a button.
Also worth mentioning this process is the same for 360 video, only difference is you use a Unity Video Player object for the UV sphere. Instead of a standard material.
If you have any questions please feel free to PM directly so I can see if I can help.

This works.
I paid for it using Google Opinion Rewards credit.
I mean there is an app with same name "Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR" on Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
Short of bypassing the phone/headset connection somehow, or having root, there aren't really any free solutions. Here are the two most popular non-free non-root solutions:
The first option is purpose-built and comes with a wealth of related functionality and instructional information, though the installation process proves a bit tricky for some people. Package Disabler on the other hand is more of a general purpose app in which you need to disable the <strong>Gear VR Service</strong> manually, though you can set up a widget for quick toggling. I prefer the latter solution these days for reasons I wont delve into, but you might prefer the former (and again it will lead you to additional useful related options).
The following two apps can help you:
The first option is purpose-built and has a bunch of Gear VR specific features. Package Disabler Pro on the other hand is more of a general purpose app in which you need to disable the Gear VR Service manually, though you can set up a widget for quick toggling.
If you’re rooted you can also find some free solutions on the Play Store.
And don't forget to reverse the process when you're done otherwise cursing will ensue next time you try to use your Gear VR.
What phone do you own? If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, S6 or later, I'd strongly encourage you to check out the Gear VR. It's not in the same league as a Vive or Rift in terms of game complexity, but the graphic quality (with the exception of supported polygon count) and pixel ratio is nearly identical to the Rift. Some games on the Gear VR are actually nearly identical (and in some cases, free!) when compared to their Rift counterpart.
If you're interested in the Gear VR, there's no need to buy the 2017 version. It's almost identical (slightly smaller, slightly lighter, but supports all the same devices) to the 2016 version, and the 2016 version is only $45 on Amazon right now. Some games require the controller that comes with the 2017 version, but many do not and you can get the controller separately for only $28 on Amazon.
If you do get the Gear VR, I'd also recommend the Steelseries Stratus gamepad. At $46.99 it isn't cheap, but it's pretty much the best Android-compatible controller out there and also works with Windows, the HTC Vive, etc. I personally prefer the XBox One controller for PC, but I use the SteelSeries for Android. If you want a case for the Gear VR, I have this one ($16.99) and it's excellent. Very good build quality, has room for a controller and extra cables, and it's very inexpensive. One other accessory to consider if you use nice headphones is this right-angle headphone adapter. ($7.29 for 2.) This will allow you to use headphones with larger plug housings - some don't fit once the phone is within the Gear VR, and this solves that problem. Note that there are several colors and styles of this plug adapter, including both straight and right-angle versions. All should work with the Gear VR, so pick the style you like the best.
Some general notes on Gear VR use, from my experience:
There is a tool on Google Play help you can run any Cardboard app (game) on Samsung Gear VR https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr
> Can I use google cardboard apps with the Samsung Galaxy S1? with the Gvr headset?
Sure. You'll either need to disable the Gear VR service using an app like this or this, or bypass the connector entirely (so Oculus Home doesn't load when you insert your phone). And you'll need to locate a cardboard QR code designed for whatever Gear VR model you end up with so optical distortion can be properly corrected for.
> with the 3rd party headset?
Where a Gear VR headset is not involved, using your S7 with the cardboard platform is just like using any other phone with the cardboard platform. Just install the Cardboard app, find and scan a QR code for your viewer, and off you go.
Using the Gear VR platform with a Gear VR viewer is going to be a whole lot better than any other solution though.
By the way, what sort of optical aberrations do you see in high contrast scenarios (like virtual cinema environments with a movie playing) with the S1? Current generation fresnel optics are prone to producing what Rift owners call "God Rays", and Vive users call "concentric rings" (since there can be differences in how they are designed/produced), though the Vive can get a bit glary too
