I used File Commander for years and currently using Solid Explorer for almost 2 years. Both have good UI (to me).
More or less, on the Play Store it has a better rating: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman It also syncs settings between the phone and TV app, so you login Google Drive on you phone and it automatically logs in on your TV as well. Does have ads though... I don't remember if they were annoying or not as I simply bought it.
I'm using Android 7 myself and I'm not having a problem so I don't think it's (just) the OS.
Do you see any error messages?
Is this internal storage or an SD card?
Is your storage full?
Are you able to see if the roster files exist using a third party file manager app such as File Commander. Default folder is /Android/Data/net.battlescribe.../files/rosters
I've been using file commander. It has a similar layout to ES File Explorer, but without the BS. The free version does pester you a little about the premium version. It's totally worth a purchase in my eyes.

Due to my own naïveté, I bought it during the first week I got my first smartphone. It came pre-installed with my phone and at the time, it does everything I want to do. So, I paid for premium upgrade to unlock ability to bookmark folders and show hidden files.
Later, when I've learned more about Android; read more articles and forum posts. I found that there are better and free alternatives.
You mean sideload apks in general on ccwgtv?
For apks you can google (for example site apkpure)
If you want to try side loading the last version before the new UI, all you need is File Commander and the apk for the older version of Sling TV app. I am able to use File Commander to upload the apk from an ftp share I have, then install the apk. 8.9.123 was the version of Sling TV before they changed to the new UI.
The recommended file transfer app in the OP doesn't do a lick of good for me, as it requires an app to be installed on both the Google TV and any device you want to upload from. And unfortunately, the app isn't available on every platform.
I use TV File Commander, as it lets you upload to Google TV from ANY device without installing any other app. It spins up a web server on your Google TV that you can upload to using any web browser.
I download the latest APK from my iPhone and then upload it to Google TV.
File Commander: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman
If I try to set the external HDD as save location for TiviMate IPTV you can't (due to readonly as well).
So any program that wants to write to the external HDD can't as it's readonly.
you can download the APK and sideload it.
Easiest way IMO is to download it to a flash drive. install this app on your shield as a file browser, then install the APK on the flash drive with it

Not to sure but i think file commander is ok , or go to the play store then type file manager pick one and check on your phone playstore too for the same app then give it a try very easy to use bit confusing but you work it out and then some apps won t show up on your home page or app drawer so you will need an extra launcher one called sideload launcher i think file man
File Commander. Free version will work for you. It is somewhat aggressive with trying to get you to pay for it (on a subscription model, no less...) but it can access your Google Drive easily and is available from the Android TV Play Store.

Used to work but yeah I don't see it available for the Shield anymore. I'm now using File Commander.
Once you install, look for Google Drive, not Drive. The icon is very similar to Google Drive.
Hmm, I think one of your rosters is somehow broken and it's preventing the list loading (I assume you get the "preparing data" loading message beforehand). This is something I'll need to fix, since non-broken rosters should still appear).
Thou should be able to move or delete roster files via a file manager app sick as this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman
There's also a "delete all rosters" option in the menu on the Manage Data screen, though this might benefit the nuclear option...
I use File Commander, but there are plenty of others. I'm pretty sure ES got sold to a company that just wanted to use its popularity to distribute crapware.
It's heavily ad supported, but File Commander https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman has the best Android TV interface so far, imo. Much better than Xplore, Total Commander, or sideloaded Solid Explorer.
If you download an android file explorer, like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman You'll see that Writer makes a folder where they store their Notes, you can transfer to an SD card from there
File Commander is free. It is distributed in Sony Xperia phones as an OEM app. For more features, there is Total Commander. It is also free.
You're using this File Commander? There should be a "+ Folder" icon at the top (shown in the second screenshot of the app). Alternatively, download ES File Explorer.
Install a file explorer such as fk explorer and you can browser the file system and delete any photos etc you dont want.

turns out there's no android tv att verison that was ever made for android tv however att did make a fire tv version and that one will work so 1st
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman
download this file explorer on the android tv, then go to pc transfer enter the website it gives you on a computer doesn't matter if its mac or windows and then get this file to put into the downloads folder of the device you may have to turn on unrecognized sources but the app will guide you through that
ah yeah, you need to sideload (manually install the app) the apk, it wont appear in the playstore on the shield as the app itself is designed for mobile devices.
Do a search for xcloud.apk and download the most recent version you can find on your phone or whatever, upload it to google drive. Instal a file explorer on your shield (i use file commander - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman&hl=en_IE)
Install that, it has an optioin in it to link your google drive account, browse to the file in drive through file commander then install the apk file (double click it)
You'll also need to create an icon for the app (it wont appear on your homescreen), you can use this to achieve that

lemme know how you get on!
File Commander. Allows you to manage files on many popular cloud storage services like Drive, OneDrive, etc.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman
File Commander is another good one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman
I'm quite partial to File Commander, which is what I use on my phone and Nexus Player (no Mi Box yet). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.fileman&hl=en
You could use something like File Commander. On your windows PC, you need to create a folder and share it with your own windows account.
Make sure your phone is connected to your home network (same network as your PC.) Then with File Commander on your phone, you should be able see that folder in the wifi network. You will need to log in with your windows user ID & password. Then you can copy files to/from that folder.
There are other similar apps do the same thing.
