There are also many websites and a few books that help in understanding logical fallacies.
I find when I'm arguing a point, that having the results of scientific studies and quality journalistic research to draw on gives me the most power. Often, I learn so much from these sources that my understanding and opinion of the issue at hand grows in depth and in breadth.
TL;DR: Arguments are typically fueled by emotion and ideology, which can be fine, but is greatly empowered by deep understanding of the topic and by avoiding common argumentative pitfalls.
