Meditation Assistant is a free, all-in-one solution for anyone who practices meditation. It supports Android 2.1 and higher, yet has a Holo design. Its features include:
I welcome feedback from all of my users, which can be sent via the About window. Many of the features currently found in the app started as a suggestion.
Shameless plug: I wasn't pleased with the apps that were available for Android when I started my practice, so I wrote my own (free) app. Several of its features were suggestions sent in by users, I'm always glad to listen to feedback.
Meditation Assistant is the best Android app I've used so far. Minimalistic, works reliably and is open source
Shameless plug: I wrote a free meditation app, and it's essentially designed by its users. I do my best to implement every reasonable suggestion made.
Shameless plug: if you have an Android device, try my free meditation app. It will time your meditation session and save it to your record, allowing you to keep track of your practice.

Also Meditation Assistant if you're on Android. Super minimal, totally free, great functionality
The dev is also on reddit
Headspace operates in a different way to other apps - it doesn't ask for permissions from the system like other apps sometimes do, so without those, it can't prioritize itself to keep itself awake.
I've had similar issues with notifications - I'll be in a sit and I get text sounds etc.. When I use my favorite timer "Meditation Assistant", it mutes all my system sounds, and it stays awake, on 30+ minute sits, there's no issue.
I've logged tickets with support but they don't seem interested in adding this sort of internal DND, nor adding system permissions.. The only work around is to use a "keep awake" utility, and plug your phone into the wall so it stays charged.
Meditation Assistant is free and has a field for notes that will pop up when the sit is complete. I've never tried long notes though.
There's also a community option where it'll post your time and notes for others to see, if that feature is enabled. I don't remember if the community feature is opt-in or opt-out though, so if you use the app you might want to check your profile settings first.
I own a lifetime membership. I stopped using it in under a year and now use a simple timer, meditation assistant
I find that once I got into regular practice, Andy's voice was a distraction. He kept pulling me out of my meditative state and it was frustrating.
I do some of the packs occasionally while driving, but silent meditation had replaced everything else
Shameless plug: If you use Android, I wrote a free meditation app. It's even open source. It has a ton of features yet is simple enough to stay out of the way.
A few things that have helped me:
Sit upright and avoid sitting back or laying down, which will tempt you to sleep.
I use an app called "Meditation Assistant" that makes a ding sound every couple of minutes. I rotate opening and closing my eyes. The sound helps me to go back to breath and awareness if my mind drifts.
If you're looking for something less naggy and more like a simple but featureful meditation timer/tracker, you could try Meditation Assistant. The best part is it's open source / free software!
(Just in case you're not familiar, free software means that it respects the basic freedoms of being able to inspect, learn from and modify software you run on your computers. Practically, this means the code of the application is available publicly, you can modify it if you have the know-how and you can share those modifications with others so that they too can benefit from it.)
If you have an Android device, I created a free meditation timer called Meditation Assistant. It's available on Google Play. The default sound is a gentle gong sound (which was struck by Alan Watts).
Best meditation app on Android is Meditation Assistant by Rocket Nine Laboratories.
It's completely free, ad-free, no registration, and open source.
It has a customizable timer and a calendar that tracks your progress. It's actively developed, easy to use, and customizable. (I'm not affiliated with the project, I just really love it.)

The UI is an issue for me. It's funny that I used to find the Holo assets really pleasing, but now I can't stand them.
I recommend Damien Ba'al's The Satanic Praxis. He basically takes mindfulness and relaxation techniques and puts a Satanic spin on them.
I use a phone app for meditation. You can program it for different durations. I started with 15 minutes and went to 20.
You can check out the Free Mindfulness Project for more ideas. Other things I've found to be effective are progressive relaxation, prana breathing, and yoga.
I also believe meditation should be a tool available to everyone, so I created [Meditation Assistant], a free and open source meditation app for Android. You can download it on F-Droid and Google Play.
You can also check out Meditation Assistant, it's underrated and under exposed. There's a free version and a paid one that gives you the opportunity to support the dev.
It's the only one I've found that will totally silence all other alerts on my phone while having top notch sound effects like gongs and tinsha - tons of customization
If you want/need verbal guidance through each one, then Calm has a number of different options.
But I suggest just learning how to meditate without that and get a good meditation timer. I've been using Meditation Assistant for years (this is an android app, and the link is to the free version) but it's very dependable and well made
Check out a meditation timer like this one - if you're on Android. They also have a donate version, I'm not affiliated but I've been a long time supporter and it's such a stellar app
Basically, I have Headspace and rarely use it because a 20 minute sit isn't really 20 mins.. It's about 12 after Andy's stopped blathering.. I wish I could set the silence section to whatever length I wanted to.
Anyways, timers like the one I linked are super custom, silence your phones other notifications, and can chime for customized time periods, and chime a different sound at the end of your preferred sit.

This app is made by a fellow redditor (not me). It is clean, simple, free and open source.

This one is quite simple but it works well for me. It's also available on F-Droid
Shameless plug to help with your first piece of advice: If you use Android, I wrote a free app (on Google Play and F-Droid) which will help you time your sessions and keep track of your progress. It also prominently displays your current streak (consecutive days with at least one session).
I use Meditation Timer for Android. I still track my sits using this but I just have it count up indefinitely until I finish.
Shameless plug: I wrote a free Android app which has a ton of features built in, including reminding you at a certain time of day to meditate (if you haven't already), along with counting the number of consecutive days you've recorded a meditation session.
I tried a few meditation timers and wasn't satisfied, so I wrote my own. It's called Meditation Assistant, it's free, and it includes quite a few features. Everything about your session is customizable. For instance one of my users has a single bell go off 10 minutes into his session, since he practices two forms of meditation in a single session. I'm always open to suggestions from my users and implement everything within my ability.
Shameless plug: I wrote a free Android app which times and keeps track of your meditation sessions. It's open source so you can download it on F-Droid.
Hey, before developing your app, please take a look at the free and open-source app I created, Meditation Assistant. (Google Play / F-Droid)
Since it is open-source software, anyone may contribute to its development.

Meditation Assistant is a free and open source timer and recorder for Android (which I created) that is designed to be distraction-free. It tracks your "meditation streak" which you can optionally share with the MediNET community. For some users, this helps incentivize meditating for at least a few minutes a day. It's available on Google Play and F-Droid.
Meditation Assistant is a free and open source timer and recorder for Android (which I created) that doesn't include guided meditations, and is designed to be distraction-free. It's available on Google Play and F-Droid.
