MK Explorer is my fave, cuz it's actually free (unlike Solid Explorer), has a good simple ui (unlike Total Commander), and does pretty much everything i need, including copy/move actions (which a lot don't have, for some reason).
I'm using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.mkexplorer.kormateusz
The 5 permissions are legit.
Read SD card contents
Modify/delete SD card contents
In app purchases (for donations to the dev)
Keep awake (so the screen doesn't time out when you're copying files)
Add home screen shortcuts (of folders)
I currently use solid Explorer, but if you're looking for a free alternative, I would recommend MK File Explorer. It's material design, as lightweight as they can get, gives you root access, looks nice, customizable, and I think handles organization very well.
I've heard great things about this one -> MK Explorer
Good but gestures were a bit finicky -> File Explorer
Currently using -> (not free) Solid Explorer
Have you tried MK Explorer?

If someone wanted a simple but customizable two-pane file manager, then MK Explorer is great.
MK Explorer. It has simple, elegant design, and it's free. In options you can modify the app's theme.
I'd recommend using this file manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.mkexplorer.kormateusz

MK Explorer is a big surprise for me
MK Explorer is material design, and while it's not feature packed, the layout is simple and easy to use.
MK file explorer. dual pane, themeable and simple.
