I'm just finishing up BH:L now and I agree, it's well worth the money. The Dev still gets a bit of hate on this subreddit, for some reason.
You might also enjoy Monster Adventure. I played it a while ago and enjoyed the avatar customisation in a similar way. There are IAPs, but not essential and they don't beat you over the head with them.
