The incident occurred when Akshay was sitting on the terrace of the girl's house. "Chauhan said that some Muslim boys came at the girl's house on motorbikes. Six activists were arrested and the workers told cops they are from Assam, following which the cops are writing a letter to the Assam government for confirmation.
Labourers from the north-east are working in coffee plantations across Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts, the coffee belt in Karnataka which accounts for over 70% of coffee production in India.
Trouble started around 10pm Monday when a bus carrying over 70 labourers arrived at Aldur, 18km from Chikkamagaluru. The locals were talking to them when some youths accused them of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, police said. While they were questioning the labourers, the youths assaulted some of them. The locals informed cops who rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. One labourer sustained injuries and was treated at the district hospital.
Chikkamagaluru SP Santosh Babu and additional SP Annappa Naik went to the town and questioned the labourers and the youths.
The SP said, "The labourers said they're from various parts of Assam and showed us their identity cards. We'll verify them with the help of the Assam government. The Bajrang Dal activists had asked them to go back and assaulted them. We arrested six activists." The cops booked them under section 307 of the IPC. The SP said the labourers were allowed to go to their estates. Police security was beefed up at Aldur on Tuesday.
Locals said labourers from the north-east, mainly Assam, have been coming in groups to work in coffee estates for the past two years. "They don't demand an advance unlike local labourers and also work for less too," coffee estate owner D M Swamy in Aldur told TOI. "They are basically poor and come here as agri-labourers. It takes around nine months for coffee production and they stay back in the estate," he said. Stay updated on the go with Times of India News App. Click here to download it for your device.RELATED
