I don't know how to format links, so hopefully this works. Keep in mind it is definitely geared toward English speakers, but if you use it as a supplement it couldn't hurt. Have fun!
For Japanese cuisine I highly recommend the NHK World app.
There is a section with cooking videos that is extremely helpful. Most of thevideos are from the tv shows Dining With The Chef and Bento Express. The recipes are simple and the directions are explained very thoroughly. There are also some interesting cooking tips and shortcuts that get mentioned at random that are good to know, like how to make your own homemade teriyaki sauce or homemade furikaki (rice seasoning).
I do not use the apps on the phone often for VOD but I was under the impression that it was integrated with the news app.
If you tap on the red menu button on the lower right, you will see an 'On Demand' option. Tapping that should bring all the VOD shows.
It's called NHK world tv.
I tried sharing it with you from the play store but it won't let me copy or share the link here directly. I'll try again in a bit.

There are a bunch of other NHK apps there they you may find useful.
Atomic - I'm a complete IRC junkie and out of all the clients available on android, this one is the closest to what I want. It's a fork of YAAIC with lots of new features like themes and better handling of disconnects. Right now it's only available on f-droid or the project's github page.
NHK World - Japan Educational TV streaming live over the net. It harkens back to when edutainment was gentler and informative. The app recently received an overhaul and it looks quite nice.
Mi Band Notify - A powerful little app that turns the Xaiomi Mi Band (Fitness Tracker wristband) into a handy, albeit simple, notification system. I'm not into the exercise aspect of China's cheap FitBit but it works lovely as an on-body notifier. I have the Mi Band attached to my ankle and whenever I get a message/SMS/email it vibrates without disturbing anyone nearby.
Liveboot - Another little gem from Chainfire. It overlays the linux kernel bootmesages on top of your boot animation. Nice if you like seeing just what your phone is doing or if you want to feel like a 1337 hacker.
Weather Timeline - It's great to look at and easy to use. I just hope the dev fixes the abysmal radar view.
