Install Ingress Notification Helper. Enable attack notifications in Ingress, and Helper will filter them for you. I have it set to not play a sound or vibrate by default (but will still show up in the notification shade). Portals on my "favourites" list will cause the phone to ding. This lets me ignore all the unimportant attacks.

Allows you to filter your notifications and setup separate tones for various events. This also allows you to only get notifications of the portals most important to you while ignoring everything else.
That sounds vaguely like Notification Helper for Android. Is that what you may be thinking of?
[Edit] May also be IAES.
1, Create a filter in gmail.
From:
Contains word: damage
Doesn't contain words: - [name of your portal in quotes, or part of it]
☑️ Skip inbox (archive)
☑️ Mark as read
2, For some phones Notify Helper is working great. You need to enable ALL notifications to phone in Ingress (+ disable vibration for them), and allow this app to hijack ingress notification. You can choose what you will see, on "Custom" tab you can type part of the portal names (plus part of the address, if there are too many similar names).
Another useful thing with this app - you can easily read messages someone sent you in COMM (they are typically buried under alerts)
If you are on Android, check out Notify Helper

Turn off emails, but leave notifications on in your scanner, then train Notify Helper by marking your favorite portals. Alternatively, you can leave emails on, and just filter them in gMail and mark as read so they don't blow up your inbox.
Yes, it's an app.
This allows you to filter wanted/unwanted notifications
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.holgis.portalnotifier it is possible to set up custom alert groups with their own sounds (android only)
There is already a third party app which does this. It is a bit of a grey area in regards to the Terms of Service. But the app does not access any Ingress server or Intel data directly, it just collects the notifications received by the device. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.holgis.portalnotifier
Its a bit confusing as Prime may do its own portal under attack audio notification at about the same time the system is doing its own.
I only have Ingress notifications enabled for the Notification Helper, which allows to me to filter for only the stuff I'd care about. Otherwise I have them disabled entirely.
