Yeah, One More Brick is useful for this because your "turn" winds up taking longer as time goes on, so there's a natural rhythm that lets you pay attention to the game for 1 second, then turn your attention back to the TV while you wait for your shot to finish.
Alternative game to Minesweeper? I love using "One More Brick" for this, because it only requires a single action at a time (aiming and releasing the ball) and doesn't really have any "larger systems" or story narrative for me to keep track of. That means I can use it to idly distract my brain from getting bored with the show/movie, but also have enough of my focus available to follow the show/movie without any issue.
I will also say that I do the same thing in reverse when I'm trying to focus on doing work... I put on music (generally ambient/downtempo without lyrics, I love Groove Salad for this because it's streaming and I don't have to bother choosing what songs to listen to). The music helps keep my brain from getting "too bored" while waiting for stuff to load... without the music, I wind up opening reddit or something to "fill the attention void" and then lose the thread entirely on whatever work task I was doing.
There are many clones of the game, even to the point where it is hard to determine who came up with it.
They mostly differ between the powerups. I personally like One More Brick the most.

> Simple yet incredibly addictive game, the perfect time killer! Take your time to aim. Shoot and watch the chain of balls hit, bounce and destroy the bricks. Think strategically and make the most of the power-ups. ...

It's sorta reverse arkanoid (or Arkanoid + Bust-A-Move)? Fire a stream of balls at brick, after each shot the bricks move down and gain 1 more HP, you can pick up an extra ball on every line.
It's that fantastic mix of easy to pick up and put down, simple concepts, rewarding, and endless.
There's a couple games like it (I'm not sure which is the original), but this is the best of the ones I've tried out. I've been playing it for a good long while now, and still go back to it almost daily.
You can also try "One more Brick"
In my opinion much smoother and with some extras like Checkpoints, Good and bad powerups.
One More Brick is perfect .
so, this week:
one more brick (android): played more on the toilet. 131 balls is still my personal best and I unlocked a few more balls, most recently in the 200-star range, the rest cost between 250 and 1000 stars and don't really make much of a difference. I was about to move on for now, but an update came out with 60 challenges. managed 5/20 medium, 2/20 hard and 0/20 very hard and only one of each is unlocked at a time, so can't try the rest, and a retry button would be nice in the pause menu. it's really time to play something else, but I'll keep it installed, just in case.
droom (android): an isometric puzzler, functional graphics and audio, awful writing/story(?) (or translation), you can rotate the level but can't zoom in/out. you need to pick up a certain number of white or black pieces to open gates and there are multiple paths to take, leading to extra areas. it was okay for a few sessions on the toilet, but apparently it's still in beta with more levels 'comming soon', which I don't really care about.
topsoil (android): it's a garden puzzle game. not match 3 and not triple town-like 'put down 3 of the same to make the next tier' either, just plant various things and every few moves clear something out, preferably a plant that is next to a few more of its own kind. trees take a few turns to grow and every time you harvest something, the soil color changes, so it's not that easy. I like it, but it only offers 3 plays per day without watching ads or paying, so I definitely need something else to fill up toilet time.
hoplite (android): got this recommended when I asked around for mobile games. it's a roguelike, but I didn't like it.
gems of war (android): one of the many 'match 3 but with quests and shit' games I found/got recommended, looked like one of the better ones, so I was saving it for later, then I found out it's also on pc. and that I'd already marked it not interested on steam, probably because it's f2p. I'd rather play mobile-only stuff on my phone and if there's a pc version, play it there, but this one being f2p, it's probably grindy and whatnot, so the mobile version would do. except it's online-only and not ideal to play on the phone's small screen, so I uninstalled it, plenty of similar titles to check out.
just out of curiosity I tried the pc version. it's the same, but I can see stuff better, so I played some more. it's pretty cool, lots to do, so I'll play until it inevitably gets grindy or something. I was already dying towards the end of the first zone, and there are 30, so it's promising, but you don't lose anything when you're defeated, that takes away a little frustration at least. I really like how the baby dragon changes into a random real dragon after using its skill. when it turns into an egg though, fuck that... a steam buddy invited me to their guild, so I get random stuff in the mail too. then I pulled in another steam buddy, who has no problem playing on hard and doing the challenges, which always makes me realize how much I suck at games. anyway, I'll keep on playing for a while. I could do without the lame unit descriptions and end-of-combat one-liners though.
heroes and puzzles (android): another online-only match 3 thing, wanted me to create a gamer id, so I passed.
horde of heroes (android): yet another match 3 combat-rpg thing, works offline, but it's real-time, which is not ideal. gonna play for a while, probably not gonna get too many diamonds or keys to open reward chests and get the good stuff, but that also takes away the need to 3-star levels, just do them, get some xp, move on. we'll see how feasible it is. there's also an energy system, each level takes away a number of hearts if you die there, and if you lose all 10, there's a cooldown. not sure how long/bad it is, but it's not nice, having a cash shop and also limiting free play like this, but it's free, plus the 2 hearts I lost one night I got back the next morning, so can't really complain so far, only move on if it gets in the way and find something else. it's also possible to ask friends for keys/diamonds/revive, but I have none.
talismania deluxe (demo): got this recommended the other day, had a demo, gave it a shot, now it's wishlisted, waiting for a sale.
lara croft go: hitman go is one of my all-time favorite puzzlers, so glad I bought it even though I never played, or was interested, in anything hitman because of stealth and stuff. tomb raider either, but (or probably that's why) I really enjoyed the 2013 reboot. I would've been fine with more of the same as hitman go, but in a different setting, and basically it's the same, but there are new mechanics and stuff. like collectibles and outfits, because tomb raider, I guess. man, lara in a hitman suit is just... wrong.
can't remember how it was in hitman, but I seem to remember keyboard controls and/or click-to-go-there, but this is mouse only and you have to drag to move, which sucks. if it was the same there, well, that's that. even worse is that you can only check the number of collectibles and if you missed any in the main menu/level select, the pause menu is useless, gotta replay the levels until you find what's missing. or you can go back to the main menu after every single level to see how many things you need to look out for, but it still doesn't mean you'll find everything before moving on to the next section. collectibles don't do much, but it's still shit. and I'd still like an undo instead of restarting when I make a mistake.
other than these, it's pretty great so far, except for the pillar pushing, it's a bit too much sometimes. there are no special requirements (no kill, x number of moves, etc.), but it's still tricky just get through some of the levels at all. thankfully, if you reach a 'checkpoint' (screen transition to the next section) and quit, next time you don't have to start the level from the very beginning. I'm done with the main game's 5 chapters, 2 dlc chapters left, and I hope deus ex go makes its way to steam eventually too, currently it's only available for pc from the windows store, it's $6 and you can buy hints. fantastic.
peg: from the developer of knights, another 1-euro puzzler, launch discount, if-you-own-knights discount, so I picked it up the day it came out, this monday (I only do this in similarly cheap cases), and already started playing (I also only do this in similar cases, gotta wait for bugfixes and such even if the price is good enough).
there are various options and settings for speed and stuff, 5 choices for music and everything, can't really complain there, though some icons arent that self-explanatory (no text in the game at all, it's a design decision, no problem, just caused some confusion) and the game itself is fun too, definitely worth the asking price. it also has daily levels if you want more than the 100+ already in the game. of course I got stuck as early as the last level of the first level set, but could figure it out after about 10 minutes, I'm so smart... haven't finished it yet, almost done with set 4 of 7, the circle board, which really needs some getting used to.
zombie vikings: finally started playing it with my co-op buddy and it's great (when there are no technical problems, lag and shit), some funny stuff there in the cutscenes and during the levels. I already liked rampage knights more than castle crashers, and this is even better, though rampage knights is a roguelite, while this is linear and story-based, no random drops and whatnot. we missed the sidequests in 3 levels (well, in one we couldn't figure out how to access it), gotta go back to those, and of course finish the damn thing. also, it doesn't remember volume settings for some reason and when we die, level from the beginning, lose gold you gathered on the level before you died. not ideal, not too bad either.
Looks like a clone of One More Brick

Really isn't that great of a game, but I can't stop playing it for some reason.
Not sure which came first, but BB-TAN appears to be a clone of One More Brick (or vice-versa).
