Not really. The sensor will always drift, high-quality sensor drifts less, but that's about it (and super-high-quality sensor will detect Earth rotation and will drift anyway). Android itself does not have any system settings to adjust the sensor, so you've got what you've got.
Google Cardboard combines gyro with accelerometer to compensate for the drift, however the accelerometer will compensate only up/down drift, it cannot detect when you rotate your phone left/right.
You theoretically could combine gyro with compass sensor for left/right drift compensation, but compass sensor is slow and very very shaky.
My game uses a homegrown filtering algorithm to compensate for drift in any direction, but the result is that the gyroscope is very stiff during the first 30 seconds of gameplay, and it stays a bit stiff afterwards.

Doom (1-3), quake(1-3) Hexen are all playable on android. Shadow warrior is also in the play store.
For a free arena shooter you can try open arena. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.openarena.sdl
For a bit more modern you can also play half-life on android.
[dev] OpenArena, yet another Quake 3 port.
VR toggle is on the bottom-left on the main screen.
Best way to play with VR is to select 'Single player' - 'Skirmish', then decrease game speed to minimum.
I would appreciate any comments.
OpenArena is basically a quake 3 arena clone
Well, Android build is available and it should support ARM, though I am not sure how you can run it on Linux.

Oh and open arena https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.openarena.sdl
I'm mostly a PC guy, so I can't give you much in the way of mobile suggestions.
Source engine games (TF2, CS:GO) used to be able to push 64 players, you MAY still be able to do it with a metamod or sourcemod plugin for the server, it's been a long time since I've touched it though, so I don't know if those high player count plugins exist anymore.
Xonotic, open source, up to 32 players.
Unvanquished, open source, re-implementation of the game Tremulous in a newer engine.
Unsure of exact max player count, but at minimum is 40, probably up to 64.
OpenArena, Open source re-implementation of Quake 3 Arena. Up to 32 players. Has Android version.
