I'm surprised by the comments in here. Panther (and I believe CamCabs too) have a great application with all the features people love with Uber: payment with card through app, tracking booked car, fare estimates and rating driver afterwards. You can even pre-book cars with it, something you can't do with Uber X.
If your argument for why this is so great is that it'll add competition to the taxi market, then I'd point out that there's already quite a few firms competing with Panther and perhaps more importantly that Uber is not competing fairly by not being under the same regulations as these firms.
And on this point, I'm surprised as to how people generally do not oppose the lack of said regulations (security vetting, accessibility, etc.) and how Uber blatantly does not give the same employment rights as normal taxi companies are required to. Don't let anecdotal experiences with taxi drivers shape your opinion on these hard fought for laws and safety guards.
If Uber had been incredibly better both on terms of usability and price, then yes, maybe the best way to protest would be to use Uber - but that's hardly the case in Cambridge as prices are comparably quite reasonable and due to mentioned Panther application.
I'm sure I've offended some here by being too provoking and black & white on this issue, I know it's more complex than outlined above, for instance I'm quite opposed to the current cap on taxi licences which is at times too low for demand. I've even used Uber on multiple occasions myself in good conscience. I just don't understand the incredible excitement with regards to these rumours.
> Or are you just excited about the prospect of booking a ride using an App instead of a phone number?
