I'm guessing its just a habit or convenience.
/u/contes-post until they hopefully implement this feature you can use something like primitive ftpd (Store link) if you want to send it locally
I'm using "primitive ftdp" app to setup an ftp server, and added it as a network drive on my laptop for transferring torrents to HDD connected to my Shield (2019 Pro).
Works great, and pretty fast for transfers.
Free, and no ads!!
For wifi FTP transferes i suggest primitive FTPd over amything else: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
Opensource and also available in the FDroid store, unlike the other suggestion which i also used before i switched to it.
primitive FTPd also has a lot more very usefull features and is way more transparent in its setup regarding what it does.
You setup an FTP server on the phone. There are various apps for this such as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.xnano.android.ftpserver.tv
Some file managers also include it as a built-in feature.
I used to use a very simple but lightweight one called "primitive ftpd".
Now i just use "X-plore File manager" because i can do all in just one app, server, copy, delete etc. I dont remember if FTP server was available in the free version or not.
After further experimentation, I've hit on running an FTP server on the Android device (I used Primitive FTPD, but open to other suggestions) and a GUI FTP client on Windows (I used FileZilla, being careful not to download the version bundled with crapware).
I had to tell PFTPD to share a non-root directory on the Android's microSD card (by selecting the SAF option), but once I fed FileZilla the IP address and port number for the phone, FileZilla let me navigate within the various subdirectories, and drag and drop a directory tree from the Windows machine onto the Android.
You can do this over LAN without having to go through the internet, which will make the transfer significantly faster. Install an FTP server like Primitive FTPd onto your device, then install an FTP client onto your computer like WinSCP. Start the FTP server on your phone and connect to its IP with the FTP client. From there, you should be able to access all files on the phone.
MiXplorer has ftp option a bit hidden, if you want something super simple and basic these apps are also good alternatives:
Primitive FTPd:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
Material Files:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.zhanghai.android.files
Its file transfer protocol. I use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
You start the server, give it access to your phones storage, and then you connect to the IP address and port it gives you using a FTP client on your PC. For the PC side (for Windows at least) I use Filezilla.
If it's EXTREMELY annoying, you could try copying the files through ftp. It too is kinda annoying, but at least you ~don't need a cable. It's slower than usb2 and you ~have to maintain your connection to the pc, but you can het the files. I'd ~recommened this open source app to make your phone an ftp server: Primitive FTPd:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
And winscp (open source) or total commander (closed source) for your pc to connect to your phone.
There are two Android apps that you can check out:
As a workaround, you should just install a local FTP server on your phone. Way more handy, reliable, and less annoying to deal with than MTP which sucks on pretty much everything including Windows.
If you just need to transfer files, you can use an app like EasyJoin:
https://easyjoin.net/android_free.html
Or setup an FTP server on your phone and then transfer files that way.
If you have your phone and computer on the same network you can use wifi to transfer files without connecting your phone.
I haven't used it but primitive FTPd looks pretty good.
Don't know if this helps but haven't used a cable to transfer between my PC and phone in years. Instead I've been using SFTP servers: Primative FTPd SSHelper
Primative FTPd sets up an FTP and/or SFTP server on your phone so you transfer files with applications like FileZilla or WinSCP.
SSHelper is an ssh and sftp server which can which can also transfer files up and down with clients like FileZilla and WinSCP.
That's weird. I do this literally several times a day and it works quite well. Can you try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd instead of SMB and see if you get the same result?
Someone else on the sub was using Primitive FTPd https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
I know. I've started using SFTP with primitive ftpd instead.
You can use all sorts of apps over Wifi instead of Bluetooth and it's much faster.
You can use these apps to send/receive any file over any device with a browser.
You can torrent any file from browser to browser with this site.
You can run a simple FTP server on your phone and connect to it with an FTP client on any device.

You can use this open source app which runs on Windows and Android perfectly.
https://github.com/linuxmint/warpinator
You can open a Wifi-only HTTP server from your phone with this and connect to it with any browser.

This one does it, too.

Filezilla on Windows and Primitive FTPd on Android.
Works really well.
I use Primitive FTPd. It doesn't even have ads and works well.
primitive ftpd on Android.

https://github.com/wolpi/prim-ftpd/releases/tag/prim-ftpd-6.7
Use the above two unless you absolutely cant use your APK package installer/manager.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.primftpd
Google Play link, if you have Google Play Services and need to remotely install it, otherwise don't use this)
On your PC, use the FileZilla client. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, so your OS shouldn't matter.

Both primitive ftpd and FileZilla are free and open source.
FTP server on phone and FileZilla on PC
I recommend Primitive FTPd
I prefer to use this:
