I will be going over this tonight when we play but I thought I'd give you a written summation of what I'll be covering so you have something to come back to in reference. I've been thinking about a comprehensive mini tutorial for you bc I searched your GT on Destiny Tracker. There's a few things you can do whether you play daily or even just a couple days a week.
When you load up first thing take your character to the Tower and go see the bounty vendor and grab some bounties (if there's a bounty for something you don't think you'll do grab it anyways). I'll generally grab just about everything regardless then I'll go visit Eris to fill in the rest of the bounties in my slots. While Eris doesn't give you xp for Vanguard her bounties will at least net some XP for your weapons/armor when they're turned in (as do Vendor bounties but they also give you rep towards Vanguard whereas Eris bounties only give rep towards Eris' ranks).
Jump back to orbit and see where you can knock out the majority of your bounties. Then just pop in to a patrol mission for that area to get these done (patrol missions also give you XP towards Vanguard or whatever relevant Faction you're wearing an item for so run these as you're completing other bounties...sometimes you'll get a bounty just for running patrol missions which is helpful too) and at this point I'll check out the Destiny Public Events Timer site or use the Android app and see where a public event will be for whatever area I'm patrolling (public events will net you a daily package at the mail vendor in the Tower plus XP and a random ascendant material for getting gold status completion...you'll get XP for running multiple events but only the first gold tier win will give you the package at the Tower). Just run bounties and grab patrol mission and get a public event in and all this will help with your Vanguard/faction rank.
Run strikes. These give you XP towards armor/weapons (XP goes to armor for completion but you'll gain XP on your weapons just from killing all the things). These will also help you get engrams and other random drops.
You'll want to hit at least rank 2 on your Vanguard just to be able to buy some things from your Vanguard rep in the Tower (starting at rank 3 and every rank up from there on out you'll get a Vanguard/faction rewards package at the mail vendor just for ranking up). This will help you get armor that will get you to lvl 31 (once armor is upgraded of course) and help you start getting into higher level missions.
Through the course of doing all this you'll get Vanguard marks (same as getting Crucible marks for playing Crucible) and these are what you'll spend at vendors to buy armor/weapons. I'd just buy what you can and hope RNG give you other things you need as drops/rewards from missions/strikes. As for strikes you'll want to run Roc level 26 strikes as they give more XP and it'll usually give you some engram at the end as a reward.
The more engrams you get the more your Cryptarch rank will go up as well. Same as Vanguard and faction reps you'll get a package at rank 3 and every rank up thereafter.
Weekly run down
Tuesday - we try to knock out 3 Nightfalls (me and my regular gaming buddy each have 3 characters) (gives you random rewards - sometimes exotics)
Next gaming time - knock out 3 Weekly Heroic lvl 30's (each run will get us 9 Strange Coins so a total of 27 plus a few engrams not to mention the random drops as you play through)
The rest of the week we'll run the daily heroic story missions and run patrol to run bounties and build ranks and get xp for whatever weapon/armor we're trying to upgrade
Sometimes we'll try to run Crota's End and see how far we can get bc we can at least make it through the Abyss and sometimes the Bridge encounter which can net us weapons/armor/radiant materials.
