Okay this comment is 9 days old, but we're doing this. Okay.
Over the past decade or more, Shane Dawson has done things throughout his career on youtube that showcase a pattern of behaviour. Many people including myself deem the things he has done to be horrendous. This isn't just stuff from a decade ago or 9 years ago or 8 or 7 or 6 or 5 or 4, it is stuff up to the current day. You refuse to admit this is the case, you keep talking about 2008 and 2009 and not talk about the more recent stuff. It is interesting to say the least.
First and foremost, I want to make it very clear that people WERE criticizing Shane in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021. He has been criticized and called out for his behaviour his entire career. The thing is, he's been called out primarily by Black women and no one listened to them. Not just Black women though, Neil Cicierega (Potter Puppet Pals) called him out on his shit (like in 2013, twice, thrice). People have been consistently calling out Shane Dawson's behaviour, it's just that people didn't listen and people not listening is not an excuse to deny it didn't happen or to deny it is worthy of criticism.
Now that this is cleared up, let's get down to business.
Blackface has been unacceptable for decades, literal decades. It has not been okay to paint yourself up as a mockery of Black people for a very long time. Long before Youtube was invented. So people turning a blind eye to it in 2008, 2009 doesn't dismiss the fact it is racist. It wasn't acceptable then and it doesn't really matter how people responded to it. What was failed previously was people holding others accountable for darkening their skin for other POC (Indigenous and Asian peoples primarily), that wasn't something that was common back in 2008/2009, but that's not what Shane did. Shane was doing blackface of Black people which has specifically been deemed inappropriate ages ago. There are situations where people did do it in that time frame, but it was always heavily criticized and deemed as inappropriate. Just because Shane got away with it back then doesn't mean it was okay. And just because he apologized for it, doesn't mean Black people have to accept his apology - and from what I've seen, the consensus is the apology wasn't good enough. My personal issue with his apology - from an apology standpoint - is I've never seen him explain why blackface is wrong, he just says it is wrong.
The racism also stems years and years, he has made money off of mocking Black people and degrading them. He continued to profit off of videos he claimed in 2020 he was embarrassed of until they got dug up in 2020, juxtaposition that with Jenna Marbles who had privatized the videos in question (which were racist) years prior. Why didn't Shane do that? If he was embarrassed by them and didn't stand by them for years, why were they still making him adsense money? Why were they still accessible on his channel? That I find really fucking weird because it isn't something one forgets about when that was the entirety of their content for years. You know what content you've made and he chose to keep it up, that says a lot. And yes, he 100% should have gone through his videos and privatized things years before this happened. Someone shouldn't have to call you out for you to do that. He was also making merch sales off these characters for years and for what its worth Shaynaynay featured on his Quidd store (Quidd is an app that is collecting cards and stickers from different brands available for apple and android, they added an Influencer one in ... I believe 2018 (Jan of 2018). 2018 is when people, like yourself, say that Shane's changed, so why is it when I open my quidd app I can find Shaynaynay on there (in Shane Dawson GIFs, It's Shaynaynay GIFs of which there was an award), if he had changed in 2018 why was that there? And that's not even talking about the fact that his videos contained racist and harmful stereotypes of not only Black people for years, but of other POC as well. And not only was this shit getting called out at the time, but he continued to profit on it for years - beyond the point he says he was embarrassed by it. Black people and POC have the right to not accept his apology, and the consensus I've seen is the apologies were not good enough - and a lot of them don't touch on certain topics. Again I don't personally like he can't explain why something is wrong, it's a theme and it bothers me.
The anti-semitism we never touch on, but we really should. He was antisemitic towards one of the people in his videos (things like mocking her nose - there is an antisemitic stereotype that Jewish people have big noses). But not only that, but someone mentioned recently - which is a fair point - a lot of his conspiracy videos (which date past the time you say his stuff is being criticized) have antisemitic themes. A lot of conspiracy theories are targeted at Jewish people, they are antisemitic. And because Shane - from the conspiracy videos I've watched - presented the conspiracy theories as fact, this causes a massive problem. Antisemitism is growing in the US (and other places too, but he's based in the US) and this shit doesn't help. Normalizing it, giving it a platform is not okay and because it is subtle, a lot of people who don't know a lot about antisemitism are not going to clock it.
The sexism also spans a long time. In his videos, in his movies, in his shorts he often degrades women and takes cheap shots at them. He has fat-shamed women, slut-shamed women (that is something he has done consistently), he has insulted women, made harmful generalizations towards women, and done subtle sexist things for years. Oh yeah and he said on a podcast in ... 2015 I believe, that he had a fantasy of torturing and murdering a woman who had been critical of him. Not only does that disprove that people have only been critical of Shane the past year, but his defence to that was 'I wasn't talking about the black woman you think I was referring to, it was a white woman' which ... first isn't the point and second makes anything he says after that meaningless because that statement to me (which is paraphrased) means that he thought the issue was that it was directed towards a Black woman (which would certainly make it racist as well), but it was the fact he said it on his podcast at all. Who the fuck says that? Who the fuck threatens a woman like that? And you might argue it isn't a threat, but it is a threat by saying he has thought about it and it is there to make the woman feel uncomfortable. That also is not an appropriate response to anyone criticizing you ever. Ever. And as a woman, I don't have to accept his apology for any of the sexism and I certainly don't for his pseudo-apology of the fantasy of torturing and murdering a woman. Also his Paris Hilton impersonation was sexist as well.
Onto sexualizing animals. The Cat Fucking scandal springs to mind, which again came from his podcast (and isn't from 08 or 09) which he did apologize for on twitter. And in my opinion that apology was a load of horse shit, that's a personal opinion but I think his first tweet about it came across as the fact he was annoyed this came up and he didn't actually feel bad about any of it making anything he said after meaningless. That is obviously a personal opinion, but it's an apology that no one has to accept if they don't want to. Beyond this there are videos of him behaving inappropriately with dogs which are just gross to watch and not something he's touched on to my knowledge.
Also probably important to mention that a kitten him and Ryland got died in their care due to their negligence. You do not leave a kitten alone with two big dogs (regardless of the dog's personality because if they are not used to being around a kitten they might try to play with the kitten in a way that is harmful to the cat), you don't do it. You have to make sure that you animals are adapted to one another and that nothing is going to happen. You have to slowly introduce new animals to the other animals in your household. That was negligence and worthy of criticism. It also happened after he got "cancelled". And it really upset people because people love animals, while it was an accident it was due to negligence and as a result deserves to be criticized.
