Radiation Island and it's 2 sequels :

I really enjoyed this game, but it's not to everyone's taste as a little buggy and rough round the edges. Really ambitious for the time and I so wish other developers would create more games like this.
Not quite the same but its got zombies on an island - Radiation Island. It's part of a trilogy. It can be glitchy, but I had a blast with it and the sequel. There's a demo you can try first :

Morphite Dead Effect
Even though those three started on phones before going to pc.
Don't Starve
Radiation island. Survival with a bit of story, surprisingly good for it's price, definitely worth it.
Oddworld: Munch's Odyssee. Port from Xbox
Oddworld: stranger's wrath. Shooter with a story in the world of oddworld
Horn. adventure game with a simplistic combat system, really beautiful and with nice sound.
Dark meadow. Really pretty and free to play (with iaps), didn't finish it so I can't tell if it becomes a necessity at some point. I can tell you it can surprisingly run on slow devices (though not at full speed) and I played at least five hours of it without paying a dime.
Terraria. The amount of content available in mobile is outstanding and it's truly worth the full price. Only big downside is that touch controls kind of suck.
Castle of illusion. Really fun, really nice graphics and gamepad support. It is worth it.
Another world. This I haven't played, but I did play the original and can tell you it is a really good game, nice to chill while playing and have a nice experience.
Sine mora. Can't personally vouch for this one, but I know people loved it and it received very good critics, it's just not my jam.
[The world ends with you](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.subarashikikonosekai_solo]. Port of the DS game, try to get it on sale because I personally think it's a little expensive (don't know how much the DS version costs tho, and this one should have better graphics).
Not a hero. I might edit this comment later to add a link, the game isn't available on phones as it is for Android TV, but if you do workarounds you can put it on a phone or tablet. Gamepad is a requisite.
Adding to that one, "Maldita Castilla" is free and is very much like ghouls and goblins, gamepad is a requisite too.
Worms 4. It's worms, if you played any of the games you know why this is here.
Don't starve. Same deal as with Terraria, a lot to offer but touch controls suck, this one is a little unpolished in the Android version tho.
Jet set radio remake. I can't get it to show on Google play with this phone so I might add the link later.
Vainglory. I don't really like mobas, but everyone seems to love this one so I'll include it here.
Last lie. My God is it beautiful and free, the way the iaps are implemented is very sensitive and thoughtful, you can play the whole game for free without watching ads or anything! I feel this dev deserves some love, so hopefully one of you pays and makes me feel better for having played it without paying.
Downwell. It's a masterpiece in game design and a really fun game, it's available on PC too.
I also have a fair amount of games that look really good for Android but decided not to include them here since I haven't played them and haven't heard much about them either.
And of course, any telltale games.
If you can see past some of the bugs and limitations, I enjoyed Radiation Island.
