SF Bay Area BART application built for cyclists and pedestrians
Features:
I just released a new BART application for the benefit of you! The de facto standard BART app is BART Runner. I like the app but wanted to build something for cyclists and also provide a simpler UI. It is the 21st century! I shouldn't have to scroll through a list and enter both my origin and destination stations. Simply enter your destination address and the app takes it from there! This app combines Google Maps walking or biking directions with BART real-time departures data. There's also a notification that tells you when to leave and also when your train is leaving. This is truly a full service BART application.
Enjoy! I'd love to hear your feedback. This has been such a fun project. I'd love to expand to other cities that have a good number of cyclists taking trains such as Chicago.
So I recently quit my corporate Android developer job of 4 years to take a break and work on some of my own projects. It has been quite the experience. Working 40 hours a week and also putting in serious hours on a side project isn't exactly sustainable, in my mind. So if you're on the fence of leaving your job, and have the funds to sit for a while, I highly recommend it. There will be some Android positions open for you when you need some money again.
I just released my app, which is a BART app designed for cyclists and pedestrians. I aimed to improve on the best BART app for Android, BART Runner. My app includes Google Maps Directions for walk or biking in addition to the BART schedules and real-time departures data. Writing a route planning algorithm was a nice change of pace to tweaking pixels and other front-end work. If you're in the SF bay, take BART, I'd love your feedback. Check it out!
Here are some things I learned while developing the app that might be useful to the community at large:
