If you're looking for remote hardware, I've personally used a Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro for a few years now and like it very much. I especially like the ability to move the mouse around and click so that i can easily click on links that I embed in the powerpoint presentation for additional info, or I can pull up a piece of software that i'm talking about (I work in IT) and demonstrate how it works. it's also quite easy to go forward and back with either the arrow buttons or the jog wheel on the side.
At work, when we have guest lecturers, we usually hand them a Logitech Professional Presenter R800 as there are really only 3 visible buttons on the thing, forward, back, and bright green laser pointer. They work quite well, and have the extra of having an integrated timer should you choose to use it, they are really ergonomic, but they lack the mouse control feature which I personally find pretty nice on the keyspan.
If you have an android phone like most people, I just came across this application that looks promising but I haven't tried it out yet: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pptremotecontrol.android.presenter
