I use an app that stops them from tracking you and it can also create tons of fake MAC addresses that flood the stores wifi with random data fucking up their metrics and statistics. It's fun to use while shopping. Fuck companies who try to invade your privacy.
Edit: It's called pry-fi. It's created by chainfire, an amazing developer.
You can use the app to simply protect yourself from being tracked, but if you're at a place you don't really like that is known for going a little too far, you can use the "go to war" option which does the stuff I discussed above.
It's root only by the way

Edit 2: To everyone saying to just turn off wifi:
If you use Google location services (the vast majority of android users have this turned on because Google bugs the shit out of you until you do) they can track you even when your wifi is off.
If Google doesn't bug you with a popup asking you to turn on this service every single time you turn your GPS on then you are already using it and can be tracked with your wifi turned off.
Edit 3: For how much Reddit likes privacy, I'm surprised at how many of you are fighting me on the idea that stopping a store from tracking you is wrong.
If you have a rooted Android device, there are apps available that can generate randomised false WiFi data, to poison tracking databases.
what about Pry-Fi ?

i assume this also only helps about passive scanning, and doesn't help against someone actively scanning the hardware MAC
No you don't. On Android you can modify the mac of your wifi interface in software, it does however require root to do that, but no flashing required.

On iOS, while scanning the MAC is randomzied so the tool would only be useful if the device was actually connected to a network, not just passing by and scanning.
On Android with root you can use an application like Pry-Fi to use rotating MAC addresses making this less effective.
There's also a feature that lets you spam the database by cycling your MAC and broadcasting at a ridiculously high rate (making it register thousands and thousands of new "customers") all at once.

This and AdNauseam are the only poisoning software I know.
Stores that utilize Mac Address tracking and other wifi networks can have their Mac address database compeltely ruined with Pry-Fi.

I think this is what you are referring to. I like it, but I didn't root my device and wanted to see if the android developers have integrated their own version.
How do your products fare against active jamming? For example, someone using Pry-Fi to "flood" fake devices around the place?
Article says iOS8 does MAC address randomization while scanning for open WiFi. But on Android there is an app that can do the same - Pry-Fi
There's a hackish solution to that. It's called Pry-Fi by Chainfire. The guy who made SuperSU for android.
>Pry-Fi will prevent your device from announcing all the networks it knows to the outside world, but it will still allow background scanning and automatically connecting to Wi-Fi networks. While you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network, the MAC address will constantly be pseudo-randomized, following a pattern that still makes the trackers think you are a real person, but they will not encounter your MAC address again. This will slowly poison their tracking database with useless information.
Be aware though, it has the potential to screw up you devices wifi drivers to the point that you aren't able to use wifi anymore (on some devices).
More deets here. (xda-dev)
Use a MAC address spoofer.
You can emulate multiple devices at once: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.pryfi
I'm so glad that this app exists for that sole reason.
Here's what I've used in the past, it's got a bunch of other features but it's worked perfectly every time so far.
If your looking for a better app to a poof MAC addresses, there's Pry-Fi
If you have a rooted Android device and are scared of retailers tracking you, you may want to look into this app:

Imagine if he had Pry-Fi installed on all of them.
I don't think it's been updated for some time

Chainfire (SuperSU) once made an app called Pri-Fi. It hasn't been updated for a few years, but maybe something like that is what you're looking for regarding Android?
