I guess you missed that big sticky that mentions gyro in it. If this says you don't have a gyroscope> (Sensor Box) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox&hl, you can use the search function or search Google for 'Google Cardboard no gyro' to find the miniscule amount of things you can do.
Maybe your proximity sensor is having problems. If the glass is dirty at all over the proximity sensor (up near the top), then clean it. It might also be a hardware issue. My proximity sensor no longer works and I first started noticing problems after an update, too. It started off only happening sometimes, then completely stopped working. There are various apps on the Play Store that can help you test the sensors, like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox
I no longer use the Nexus 5 as my primary device, but when I did, I ended up going back to Marshmallow, so that I could disable the proximity sensor with an Xposed Module. The reason the phone does this is that normally the proximity sensor tells the phone when you have the phone up to your ear, so that it can turn the screen off for battery savings, and prevent your ear from pressing buttons, too. When the sensor is messed up, it can constantly return a value of near/close, so that it always thinks it is on your ear. There isn't much of a downside from disabling it as long as you tap the power button to turn off the screen manually. The xposed module that I used was eventually abandoned and the developer released another module called "Sensor Disabler" which never seemed to work for me. If you need to track down the original "Disable Proximity Sensor" module, let me know and I can pull it off my old Nexus 5, as long as it is still there. I think the module also worked for Hangouts. For other apps, you can try using the module "XPrivacy" to revoke the proximity sensor permissions from any call apps. This settings in this module are much more granular and complicated to use, but I was able to disable the sensor in some apps using it.
In order to use the Xposed framework, you will need a rooted phone with a custom recovery.
Edit: The old version is still available in the xposed repo through the Xposed Installer app. Just install the version 1.1.1

No gyro. No play. Sure, you may be able to do some random things that you can find by using the SEARCH function of this site or typing 'google cardboard no gyro reddit' into Google, but it's best to have a phone with a gyro and call it a day.
Contact the company because venting on these boards does nothing. Put in a suggestion to the manufacturer or ask them for some kind of trade/upgrade. Never know unless you ask.
You can try using a sensor tester app to see if your accelerometer works as intended.
(first result from a google play search is linked, I did not check out this app myself but reviews seem positive)
If you have an android phone you can download the sensor tool, it picks up electromagnetic fields when you hold your phone next to it.
Yes, my AR doesn't work either, and it's because my phone doesn't have a gyrascope. Battery saving mode doesn't work either because of it.
Install the app sensor box to check what sensors your phone has.
Who is your gyroscope manufacturer? You can use the app Sensor Box for Android or also CPU-Z to find out.
Yas sensors have been known to work fine, while Akm sensors spin 360 degrees. Some phones also have Bosch which is known to work fine.
Sorry if I sound a little bit douchey, but did you check? There's an app that shows you every hardware sensor in your phone.
I have another phone that went a little wacky when trying an app because it doesn't have a gyro.
Does this say you have a gyro?> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox&hl
If not, you can SEARCH for the minimal things you can do without a gyro.
Does it have a gyroscope? Moto doesn't say it does, but that would be weird, because the 2nd gen and 1st-gen-LTE had one. (This app has a gyro tester if you don't have another way to check.)
Try downloading an app to test the proximity sensor in your phone. Maybe it broke.
This one would probably work. Sensor Box for Android
Proximity, Light, Accelerometer. Surprised the games function, otherwise, as you say. It doesn't mention gyro.
The site you listed is GARBAGE, though. I used it before. It says Blu 5.0 s ii has a gyro and it does NOT. http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/dec92be7
Use this to check and see if you have a gyroscope: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox&hl
Those GsmArena type sites don't always have their info correct. 1 of them caused me to by a phone that did not have a gyroscope.
If someone hasn't bought the phone yet, they should check the phone manufacturer's website or contact them to see if it has a gyro.
If the person, already, has the phone, they should download Sensor Box and check for themselves. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox&hl
Haven't heard of that phone. Did you check Sensor Box to be sure it has a gyro? If it doesn't, there are countless 'what can i do without a gyro' threads if you search. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox&hl
Found this Mojing IV link> http://www.dealsmachine.com/best_288168.html in this thread> https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleCardboard/comments/3tzpb2/baofeng_mojing_iv_vr_hmd_is_coming_presale/
The focal distance on that Merge looks too far.

Check for gyroscope.
Also, see what firmware Trinus calls for.
you can try something like this

and see if it sees it

Sensor Box to check your phone.
Looked that up, interesting, haven't heard of it.
