For bus, i use SG Busleh
It's clean, simple and light. Also has functions to bookmark bus stops and what not, and when the haze is around they also display the PSI. Got android wear support also.
I usually find my way around unknown areas with Google Maps and https://busrouter.sg/.
This one does, correct me if I am wrong.
I just downloaded this app today, so I'm not very familiar with how accurate this is! Found this app at the ad section on redditisfun. Heh.
I find this accurate 97% of the time. Design is up to date and the favorite function is awesome.
Paid is $3.50 for no ads n Android Wear support.
EDIT: and Citymapper. Functions inside are great and easy to use. Directions more accurate than Google Maps in some instances.
I personally use SG Bus Leh bcos it's prolly the only bus app that provides the bus location. Pretty accurate, though there were a few times the bus came sooner than predicted. Also, I really like the local colloquialism used by the app (Oei, bus leh, No bus-stops to display leh). Makes me smile everytime heh
I love this free app on Android: SG BusLeh: With Bus Locations!
I followed the link to the authors and it turns out it was made by these guys: ORIGINALLY US
Let me know how it goes if you do engage them? I have a project down the line as well which requires mobile app development, and I'm on a lookout too.
I much prefer SG Busleh
Sg BusLeh, most ~~accurate~~ reliable out of the ones I've used

Its a new bus app with a very nice and fast interface. Much better than SG Buses. Give it a try!

there is also one for apple but i cant find the link just search sgbusleh
For bus arrival timings, you can check out this highly-colloquial (and hilariously parodistic) service: Bus Uncle
Another one of my favorites is this free Android app and its iOS version
You can always use Uber (plenty of cars available everywhere) or my favorite, Grab, which in my experience tends to be often cheaper.
GrabShare and UberPool works great if you don't mind sharing your ride (though your fellow riders can randomly come in all manners of good and bad).
Singapore in general is a great place to get around. It's ultra duper safe, and transport options are cheap and plentiful. It's a minor snag that you're going to be staying in NTU though. In Chinese, we have a term (鸟不生蛋) that perfectly describes NTU. The literal translation refers to a place where even birds refuse to lay their eggs.
Just to echo another comment about the weather. Be prepared to perspire, and perspire you will! The air hangs heavy with humidity and the temperatures are almost always in the 30's (Celsius, not like your southern heretics still on Fahrenheit).
Welcome to Singapore, and please enjoy your stay!
SG BusLeh has this feature.
Bus App - it's been mentioned around here quite often recently and I find it aesthetically appealing and has all the functions I need eg. bus times
