Here's a list covering different aspects of the city. I hope you have a good time!
--Points of interest--
Link to the most comprehensive list covering points of interest in Bergen. (Tripadvisor)
Our city is rich with historic sites and beautiful nature. I strongly suggest you get a taste of the view from Fløyen or Ulriken. Both mountains have hiking paths in addition to "funiculars" (mountain trains) to Fløyen, and cable cars to Ulriken.
--Food--
• Budget food
If you're looking for budget food, Kebab shops are a great alternative. You'll find most kebab shops on this link. Typical prices are 50 NOK for a "small" kebab, which really isn't small at all. Most kebab shops have mutual prices and products, so it doesn't really matter which one you choose.
• Burger dishes
For the most amazing burger dishes at a reasonable price, check out Inside Fløien, which coincidentally is placed 50 meters from the Fløyen departure station.
• Seafood
Interested in traditional seafood from Bergen? Check out Søstrene Hagelin
• Asian
I've only tried one place, and for a reason. Guangdong House have never disappointed me, and it's one of the cheaper places too. Guangdong House is limited to chinese food, so for other stuff check this link.
• Kiosks
There's a lot of kiosks in Bergen centrum. 7-Eleven, Deli De Luca and Narvesen all stock coffee, fast food (hotdogs, pizza), bakery goods, snacks, cigarettes ++, but you'll also find soda, fruits, umbrellas, ice cream and more, depending on kiosk and location. Except for regular sales on specific food items, these places are costly.
--Public Transport--
Skyss is the only company you need to deal with for buses and "bybanen", the "city-train". These two apps will cover almost everything.
• Skyss Travel, real-time departure times, trip-planner, regular routes.
• Skyss Billett Tickets for the bus. The tickets are "open", meaning you can take any buses you want within 90 minutes of purchase.
Hi!
Veteran user of Bergens public transport system.
You need about 2 apps and a website to organize all your transport needs related to Skyss, the largest provider. This is the only company you need to deal with unless you're leaving the city. (Zone map here)
• So, number 1. Skyss Reise
This app gets you the best single-route departure times and real-time timing of the bus. Add a stop to your favorites, and it will display estimated time of arrival, like 7minutes. Check screenshots in link. The Skyss Travel app above only accounts for departure times, see below for Travel Planner.
• Number 2, Travel planner
Use the Travel planner on skyss' website for all your specific-route needs. Enter the name of a street, place, transportation stop etc. This also accounts for 'Bybanen' - the street train (or whatever you want to call it), and some ferries. The shown routes are not always optimal due to delays, and the transition stop can often be changes if you know the routes.
• Number 3, Skyss Tickets
This app is only for purchasing tickets, but lets you purchase whatever fits the occasion. Everything from 2 to 24 hour tickets, and 30+ days for the long haul.
No Ticket?
You need both ID and a pre-purchased tickets as proof of travel. Ticket security does regular checks depending on areas. I would never take the chance with city travel, as the fine is about 1200 NOK I've heard. If your phone is dead, you'll get the fine, but you can easily appeal by showing up at ticket offices with valid ticket for that time.
Skyss are not emplying the drivers directly, but have long term contracts with companies supplying drivers and vehicles. For any complaints/special requests, call them or visit their offices.
