It's a good thing that you have already realized that Stock Market is not a place where you just need to speculate and go rich or go broke completely. Actually if you have a strategy you can earn moderate return (anything above 12%) without too much risk. This is possible when you invest in companies that are doing good for a long time as well as their future prospects are good. It is more likely for a company who is doing good for last 10 years to perform well in 11th as well as subsequent years and is actually relatively easy than predicting what it is going to do in next few days. This process is an inherent part of what is famously known as "Value Investing" pioneered by Benjamin Graham and then by his disciple Warren Buffet.
Value investing is all about Paying the Right price for the company. A value investor only invests in the good businesses selling at low valuations i.e. Good companies at bargain prices.
So it's all about finding what a business is worth and if it is available at lot less than it’s worth buying. Paying the wrong price for a good company is the equivalent of buying a bad company.

As you are not even familiar with the basics I would suggest you to first go through some very interesting and useful courses on Finance on Coursera ( One course worth mentioning is https://www.coursera.org/course/introfinance which starts from absolute basics and helps you imbibe them into your thinking process which helps while you go through the advance concepts later.
It takes patience and some amount of training and discipline to control your nerves while investing in Stock Market.
That will happen as a result of the process of gaining knowledge about stock market and investing in general.
"Intelligent investor" and "Security Analysis" books are a must read for anyone planning to invest their money in any Stock Market of the world.
Do virtual trading for some time to see if you are ready to check your idea with real money.
