I liked, and often sponsor, the Tales of Illyria series. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail (this is the first one and probably my favorite storywise, there's three of them). It's a classic RPG with slightly darker thematics (serious vengeance, mostly) than you usually see in android rpgs, and it has a turn based fighting system. I don't have any connection with the devs, I just happen to like it.
The closes i've seen to it in terms of an high level of tactical gamplay and importance of character positioning is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail but I have to warn you, Darkest Dungeon is still on a completely different level.
Check if Tales of Illyria is your cup of tea. http://www.talesofillyria.com/ It's an RPG with grid, turn-based combat mixed with CYOA and a bit of Oregon Trail gameplay thrown in. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail
I often sponsor the Tales of Illyria trilogy. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail Long thread on Reddit with criticism and opinions: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/3fn1lb/are_the_tales_of_illyria_worth_getting/ (I am not associated with them in any ways, but I really like the games)
I think you should give Tales of Illyria a try. The first episode https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail is my favorite, but the others are also good, the third one (Destinies) is almost completely Sandbox. The older Deadly Dungeon could be similar to Quest Lord, but I never tried it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=DeadlyDungeons.App
I like the Illyria series from Litterkillerz. With some recent developments they introduced IAPs, but I beat the game without buying anything. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail
I had a great time with Tales of Illyria. There are 2 of them which I bought when they were on sale for $0.99 each. I only played through one since the other seemed to be more of the same. That said, the one I played through was really good. The fighting is automatic, though you can override with specific commands if you like.
You select a fighting style for your fighters, i.e. offensive, defensive, retaliatory, etc...
You select a magic style for your magic users, i.e. fire, poison, cure, buff, etc... then let them go at it.
I recommend checking it out!
Tales of Illyria is good. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail
It may not be exactly what are you looking for, but if you like RPGs this is a nice hybrid. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail (1 buck)
Tales of Illyria Fallen Knight. It has its flaws, but I liked its story, characters and rpg sysstem a lot. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littlekillerz.ringstrail&hl=en

Tales of Illaria Trilogy - The Closest Thing to a Pen and Paper RPG on Mobile
OP, you speak about games made with passion...
Such games exist, definitely. It's just that somehow they often fall under the radar for reasons unknown to me.
Take the example of Illyria trilogy, a mix between crpg, Oregon Trail and adventure game featuring very interesting world, hand drawn graphics, great storytelling and challenging gameplay. It costs next to nothing, is, as far as I'm concerned the best Android cRPG that isn't a port of other platform and yet, nobody I know plays it.
Then, the "Russian Fallout". Awesome post-apo, massive world, crafting, scavenging, tactical combat, good looking, also quite cheap... And again, hardly anyone knows it.
And another fantasy crpg, "The Quest" - a love letter to old 1-step crpgs of old like Eye of Beholder, Lands of Lore or Ishar.
These games are relatively unknown. Why?
