The Banner Saga - Now that the game has been marked down to $4.99, it was hard to pass this one by.
There is definitely a lot of competition in the Google Play Store and if you would rather play free/freemium games, then that is definitely the better option for the frugal people. However, at $5, this game is a steal. It's a full-fledged PC game with a story that changes based on your decisions.
Some have said that it doesn't play very well on screens lower than 5 inches, so definitely be aware of that. Thankfully with Google's return policy though, you can easily try it out and then return it in an hour or so if you don't think it's enjoyable on your phone(or even your tablet).
Have you thought about Banner Saga? (trailer) Almost everything fits, except maybe exploration. The exploration element is minimal if you're thinking Skyrim type exploration, but if you're just looking for variety in terms of places it has that as well.

Never tried on Android, only Steam, but Banner Saga is a gem. Complete opposite of the open world and rogue like nature of Battle Brothers, but the story is great and you'd get the tactics part of it also. The third and last installment is set to come at the end of this year I think.

Been trying out my Samsung Chromebook Plus for android gaming, been a great experience.
I'm really disappointed KOTOR won't play on my Samsung Chromebook Plus, but not surprised as it does tend to have random full stop type device specific issues. It's weird how it plays so well where it works, but man it's just dead when it doesn't.
I've moved on to Banner Saga, I always end up quitting the game on PC after a while but I'm determined to stick it out this time. I can't say enough about how much I love the art style and etc.

Also gonna start up some XCOM.

The Banner Saga and The Banner Saga 2 are amazing strategy turn-based games on any platform (it was originally a PC game). The second version has a standalone arcade mode which is one of my favorite mobile time killers!
It is a single-player experience, so no pay to win element at all- it's a "pay once" game strictly.
Combat in the Banner Saga can be frustratingly difficult, but the game has a lot of the same strengths as XCOM and much more compelling characters.
Go with option #4 and get Banner Saga while it's still half off. It's still at 4.99 for the moment but it won't last much longer; it's Thursday and the sale might end today when the Play Store updates.

The story begins with Ubin, who arrived in the port city Strand for an annual tribute. Upon arrival in the town, he learns that some bandits want to capture the authority. He's moving to the Town Tall to help the Governor deal with them. Soon, a squad of Prince Vognir and Prince Ludin arrive in the Strand. In the next morning, Ubin joins the team of Vognir, and they are all going in Grofheim The player controls a squad of soldiers under the leadership of the hero. In a single-player game, the hero has a story task, which usually requires getting to some point of the game world. On the way to the target, you can occur all sorts of events, and some of them will need the player to make decisions that affect future events.

I'm not familiar with Chromebooks, can they install apps from the Play Store? If so, you could take a look at some of the games by Square Enix (they have a same at the moment)? The Banner Saga is also good :)
