Some great games there. Probably showing my age but as classics I would always go for the original X-com over the new Frixais ones, they are good, but in gameplay in the original is better for me, Terror from the Deep is just impossible though lol.
I also really have good memories of Syndicate and Syndicate Wars, way ahead of their time.
If you like 4x games, Space Empires III and IV are very good, I used to play them by email with my friend if you can imagine that.
For more Squad games, the Jagged Alliance series was always fun, and I have just rebought the first 2 from GOG.com
If you can't wait to have the battle preparation implemented, check this mod : it lets you open the inventory popup before every fight (so you can change equipment, apply a level up, switch bros between reserve and battle group)
Depends on what you mean by similar. If you are looking for a party based, turn-based tactics game, I can say I've enjoyed Heroes of Steel (available on Steam and Android ).
Features an intriguing fantasy RPG tale over 4 acts, with original combat mechanics, a 4-character party (choosable from 8 classes) and an extensive item drop system.
There's a decent port of Battle for Wesnoth, but it kind of requires a large tablet, and I wasn't a fan of how the controls were implemented (essentially mouse simulation). That said, the game itself is a hex-based tactics game played in a typical "humans in a middle age fantasy setting", so quite similar to BB.
Thanks for the tool! Can't wait to try it out properly once the DLC is out.
A couple of things:
Nexus is free, we also mirror on moddb for people who are in countries where they can't access Nexus. Though that version is usually a couple of releases out of date.
>Do I have to get it on steam, or is there somewhere else I can buy it? I can't put steam on a work computer.
It's available on GOG which only sells DRM free games, though of course you'd miss out in steam achievements and cards and such - really depends how much stock you put in those things.
If you do decide to go for a Steam copy, it's currently 50% off from GreenManGaming (note: Overhype still gets paid, GMG is an official third party seller, not a seedy key site)
the picture is outdated you have to use the Web Prototype , and the +20MD question is just to put the Fencer somewhere :D thanks for the feedback
Never tried on Android, only Steam, but Banner Saga is a gem. Complete opposite of the open world and rogue like nature of Battle Brothers, but the story is great and you'd get the tactics part of it also. The third and last installment is set to come at the end of this year I think.
There's a mod making it possible to see some exact numbers like HP or FAT in the in-game-tool-tip.

The website Hireabro has basically everything you will ever need. And it's an amazing flowchart beginning to end, hyperlinks to viable builds for any bro you hire. If the bro doesn't fit any of the criteria. Just use a fodder build until he dies in the service life keeping your good bros alive.
You can actually play this game in basically coop via Parsec (its similar thing to Steam Remote Play Together, but works for all games). I've been doing that for years now (also with XCOM, Jagged Alliance 2, Gears Tactics... pretty much anything turn-based and ideally squad based).
One player shares his screen and the second can control everything in the game simultaneously (although only one person can control the mouse cursor at one moment).
The way we play is that each player gets exclusive control of his half of the brothers on the battlefield (which is really easy since the combat is turn based) and on the strategic map we switch who is in control between battles (but we anyways usually agree on where to go next, which contract to do,what to buy, etc.)
I have to say it's much more fun to play the game together with a buddy than alone. Especially since we each name and customize our brothers and can discuss tactics in battle.
I dont know about perks but maybe you are interested in this mod it shows stats of ennemies: https://www.moddb.com/mods/combat-stats-of-enemies/downloads/showexacthp
