I will shamelessly hype my game here since it's totally free with no ads or IAP. It's a deck builder inspired by Dominion called 'To Arms!!' :) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latahunden.toarms
So I've been playing this game, To Arms. It doesn't require internet or many permissions, doesn't use a ton of battery, and never paid a cent for it. It's a deck building game, similar to Dominion or Ascension, but single player.

To Arms!! is a solitaire deck builder you might like. The game is free without ads, but I should mention that this is shameful self promotion :)
I would never claim it's the "best" but consider checking out To Arms!! It's a deck builder I made a few years ago. It's totally free without ads. It has a small but dedicated fan base and I still update it from time to time.

To Arms!! is a minimalist mobile deckbuilding game that is shockingly devoid of ads or huge downloads. For all intents it deserves to be a commercial game because of the sheer amount of missions and cards it has, but it apparently doesn't so it's a real passion project.
Iji is an old 2d indie platform shooter/RPG with a refreshingly intriguing story, to the point of deconstruction. It also has multiple endings; one of which is a Pacifist run that requires you to not kill anything at all. It also has a TON of developer secrets to boot.
And then there's Guild Wars 2. Actually free2play, very satisfying, good community, and unlike other free2play MMOs, it is actually possible to get to where everyone is without much trouble. The only difference is that Free players don't have global chat activated to prevent crashing the economy with bots.
If you enjoy card games, maybe 'to arms!' is something you'll enjoy. A classic deck builder I first released several years ago. It has simple graphics and no sound but the game design gets quite deep if you stick to it :)

Don't know about premium but you can always give my deck builder a shot. 'To Arms' is a card game inspired by the classic deckbuilders such as dominion. It's completely free with no ads.

And others:
Linkme: Fancade, Dungeon Reels, Phantom Rose Scarlet, Hoplite, Antiyoy, Occidental Heroes, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Pathos, Hexonia
If you have an android phone I recommend To Arms
Trust me, don't let the minimalism fool you. This is an amazing game with tons of cards, a long campaign that slowly trickles and rewards you with new stuff, a daily and challenge mode, and best of all its all Free and has NO IAPs. The developer is from Sweden and he just devs this in his spare time. The updates are sparse but when they come they give you a shitload more things to do.
'To Arms!!' is always free (no ads). Solitaire deckbuilder made by me. Can take some minutes to get into but has a lot of content. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latahunden.toarms
To Arms!! is similar to Star Realms, but is designed as a single-player experience. I'll note that To Arms has very slow difficulty ramp up; though it does eventually start offering a challenge.
To Arms! is my favorite plane game that I come back to for long flights:

To Arms! Is still my favorite deck builder. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latahunden.toarms
If you are into deck building card games and don't mind simple graphics, try out my game 'To Arms!!'

I had a lot of fun with To Arms!!!

I enjoyed To Arms!!, not as much depth as Dream Quest or Monster Slayers, but great for quick games on the phone.
"To arms!!" for Android, small but I really like this DB https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latahunden.toarms

Google Play is indeed filled with trash - it's no big secret. But still it is possible to find something appropriate there.
I usually play paid premium games to not bother myself with the stuff listed above. Or play f2p games and buy the "no ads" pack to not be bothered with ads at least.
Below are some of the free games I currently play (the ones that are installed at the moment). Most of them have some sort of f2p monetization (developers are people too), but it is either not a problem, or can be neglected with single iAP - I will note it in the comments.
To Arms!! Slice & Dice Hoplite Stattered Pixel Dungeon Dungeon Tales (ads) Sword And Glory (premium currency) Dungeon Reels (ads and premium currency) Tavern Rumble (ads and premium currency)
Antiyoy Mindustry Unciv Siege Up! (ads) Theo town (premium currency) Pocket City (demo, ads) The battle of Polytopia (paylock) Ascension (paylock) Gladiabots
Kub (ads) Nihilumbra (demo) Cats are Liquid (ads) Ninja Arashi (ads) Ninja Arashi 2 (ads) Gravity Trigger (ads)
Again, these are only the games currently installed and that are possible to play without paying money. There are a lot of great games on Android that requires a bit of spending.
tl;dr Its to me, representative of a "true indie spirit" where a game is made out of passion and love, which is why it tops my list.
===============================
Back when Steam was just starting out, Iji was part of a 1st wave of Indie Games that defined the genre. The idea that a non-AAA team (much less a single person!) could make full (sometimes free) games was entirely unheard of. Some examples of games in this wave were:
Cave Story - Pixel, started out as a free little game in 2004, now modestly remade and ported over to several systems.
Meat Boy - Edmund McMillen, already achieving minor success in Flash, stepped up to make The Binding of Isaac and spent the next decade constantly updating it with DLC after DLC and even making a card game for it.
Bastion - Supergiant Games, would go on to make Transistor, Pyre, and now the nigh-mainstream Hades.
Braid - Jonathan Blow, pompous as he is would take a 10-year hiatus and come back to create the masterpiece that is The Witness
Most of the people in this 1st wave would go on to make wonderful things, retroactively putting their old games on Steam. Except this guy. Daniel Remar would just keep making small to medium sized games alongside Ludosity, and that's fine!
To me, not putting Iji on Steam represents him being humble and professional. It was clearly started as a personal pet project, to be shared with people at no expense. Daniel Remar has since had a hand in making several other games and he could very easily put his first game on Steam even if it was free, but he doesn't. It speaks to me that he doesn't need to put up a very well-made game to show how awesome he is.
Rather, I love the game for what it represents on a meta level; that he worked on it alone, clearly putting the effort, and it was made purely because he can and not for any other goal.
Another example is To Arms!. This game is 100% free and its fun and it has NO ads. It might not be the most graphically good game, but its vast in content and still being constantly updated once every 2-6 months.
Check To Arms!! Maybe, you will like it.
