I've been developing a wrapper app for Facebook but dang have I came into some issues making it better than the mobile site. Every time I try to implement something, it seems that Facebook has gone out of their way to make it hard.
For example I wanted to add a link to the status editor for quick access. There is no way to directly link to it as the buttons that do on the site are actually forms with an encrypted handshake. To make it work, I literally click the button with JavaScript.
As for notifications sucking, I am currently working on implementing it and I know it's probably going to suck. The only reasonable way (to my knowledge) to implement it is via a RSS feed (found at http://facebook.com/notifications). There is indeed notifications on the Facebook API but the required permission is only available to internal developers.
It's frustrating that Facebook purposefully allows the user experience to suck so they can data-mine with their shitty app.
toffeed typically works pretty good for me. Way less battery usage and still looks nice. Plus you don't if you don't want to have messenger, the app can still send messeges.
True that. I've still got Messenger installed, but I've rid myself of the Facebook app proper and replaced it with an open source counterpart called Toffeed (also on F-Droid). It lacks some features of the official app, but still does what I need. It's really just a wrapper for the mobile site with some beautification and quick shortcuts added.
Hey, I'm the developer of Toffeed which is a wrapper app for Facebook's mobile website.
I've recently released an update that removes sponsored content and some tweaks to the design of the app.
The app is fully open source (available on GitHub here) and utilises material design.
If you have any ideas on features you would would like implemented or have found any bugs, please submit it to the issue tracker on GitHub or email me directly (my address is on my GitHub profile).
Cheers!

With the recent criticisms of the official app, I thought it would be appropriate to advertise it here.
My aim for this app is to augment the site to make the experience pleasant as possible. It is currently quite barebones but I am planning to add more features. At the moment, background notifications is the priority (Facebook doesn't make it easy).

I've started using Toffeed (Android). It's a pretty nice wrapper for the mobile version of facebook. I recommend.
