-I would suggest you to start with little geographic knowledge. Kids brain usually needs answers for questions like "where and how". Show America on the world map then show Europe and East basically.
-While you show where Turkey is on the map, combine it with Turkish figures/photos. For instance: Bosphorous, a few cool Istanbul photos. Some photos of the town his father or relatives live.
-For the age of 8, it's probably going to be a little be boring that watching long documentaries that give long descriptions of historical events and stuff. Even for an 8 year old turkish boy would be bored. Therefore I suggest creating the documentary yourself by following these steps. Here short highlights of turkey. These probably leave more impact on his mind about his heritage. More effective.

(You can hear at 3:02 Mustafa Kemal Ataturk says : "Ne mutlu Türküm diyene!** "How happy to the one who says I am Turk" is a motto of the Republic of Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used this phrase in his speech delivered for the 10th Anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, on October 29, 1933 (Republic Day)

Combining music with graphics. That is the way for an 8 old in my opinion. You can also find more of them on the youtube I believe. Or people may mention through comments.
-Also I think it's going to be more exciting showing images of modern Turkey instead of its history. Turks have an enormous history. I believe he is going to do researchs alone when he got some certain age. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, World War 1 and Independency War of Turkey, then today's turkey would be good enough. (That's how they start educating kids in Turkey about its history. )
-Here is a good app for introducing Turkey with some images https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.turkeyguide Kids like touching smart phones nowadays I guess.
-I'll keep adding when I get more time.
By the way, I'm sorry for terrible english.
