if you want to try it out, Tusky (Play Store | F-droid) is the most polished client I've found.
Yep, there are lots of apps available for Mastodon. I believe Tusky for Mastodon is a popular one.

I know what you mean ... and that's kinda the point.
Many of these are protocols (like email or http), with different implementations (apps Outlook, Thunderbird, Edge, Firefox, Chrome) for them to be used.
Element (formerly called Riot) is one of the best of these ... but, as with most of these, the userbase is small.

The point of many of these is for the internet to become "self-hosted" ... basically bittorrent for the whole internet ... and the bittorrent network has never been shut down.
