Depends on the game and how it's being played. Minecraft, for instance, can be educational. My 8yo knows quite a bit about building circuits at this point. And Tynker, a game that teaches programming skills/language. He has free access to that one, no time limits. And there's Super Mario Galaxy, which is not an especially educational game but for once, my son is persevering and actually putting effort into beating the levels - instead of giving up at the first failure as he is wont to do - and I love seeing that change in attitude. I don't think all screen time is bad or useless. I limit mindless screen time (cartoons, pointless games like Angry Birds, the like) but am more permissive where it comes to educational things and times where he's interacting with friends.
