You don't even have to take out your phone if you're signed into your Google account, just click install and tell it to install to the device in your pocket that you're too lazy to pull out.

If you want to be able to view your phone's notifications and answer calls in VR, I guess? Otherwise, it seems optional.

But i think the app never really worked well. i never heard anything positive about it. And you need Viveport running to connect phone to Vive.
