Just have to say that changing to Weechat was the best decision I have made with IRC. Every single IRC client was crap, until I finally tried the Weechat relay. It is simply the best there is. On desktop I just use ssh + weechat in tmux.
Wouldn't run Weechat on the phone like this though. Not reliable enough to stay connected all the time.
I did try Glowing Bear too but I despise everything that is a "native" web app.
Mikäli on valmis luopumaan Irssistä ja kokeilemaan WeeChattia, löytyy androidille https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubergeek42.WeechatAndroid tuollainen käyttöliittymä. Myös selainpohjainen versio on saatavilla (client side js:ää) osoitteessa https://www.glowing-bear.org/ perinteisen Curses-interfacen lisäksi
I have an Android, but you should be able to do the same thing I do if you have a spare system where you can run a client.
I run weechat on a VPS, and leave it in a screen session that's always running (you could use tmux or any other terminal multiplexer). Then I connect to it with a relay client, and I believe these exist for iOS too. If that doesn't work (I haven't used iOS in ages), you could also install weechat-matrix and use use a Matrix client to connect.
I guess these aren't the best options, but they work for me.
One last option - if you don't need to reply from your phone, many IRC clients support pushbullet/pushover/etc for pushing notifications to your phone.
I run https://weechat.org/ under screen, which includes the weechat relay.
I then have https://github.com/glowing-bear/glowing-bear that connects to the relay giving me web access to IRC from wherever.
I also have the Android Weechat relay client https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ubergeek42.WeechatAndroid&hl=en_GB which also connects from my phone to the relay to provide IRC.
Essentially the same setup just with a wider variety of clients able to connect to what is running under screen.
I used to use IRCCloud, but I stopped because of a very nasty altercation with their staff. James really lost his cool when I broke his web client by /nick'ing to []
and saying a message. I interpreted his further comments as wanting to pursue legal action against me.
What I use now is a combination of WeeChat and Glowing-Bear. Together, with a few scripts like pushover.pl
, I have an IRCCloud-like solution. Weechat functions as an IRC client, bouncer, and IRC backend while Glowing-Bear functions as a web frontend. I also use weechat-android on my Android phone.
