Just plug a $10 bluetooth adapter into your cars diagnostic port and you can set it up to display gauges for all sorts of your cars sensors, and diagnose fault codes without having to get a mechanic to do it. Lots of other nifty features too. Good to get a cheap tablet and use it as a permanent display in the car.
If you're on Android, do check out Metal for Facebook. It's a very decent Facebook replacement app that provides a more privacy-secure FB experience and re-integrates some of those off-loaded features, like Messenger.
It also happens to have Twitter support, if you're a Twitter user.
Whatsapp is owned by fucking Facebook. Nobody should use it for anything.
Use Signal.
You might be using your native texting app, but instead should be using <strong>Textra</strong>, especially if you like the iPhone interface and emojis.
That's why you should be using uBlock Origin, which is available on Firefox for Android without rooting.
Edit: Added links
I've used Textra before and if I remember correctly, you could customize the colors on it.
I'm currently using the stock messenger app on my Pixel. I believe you can download it here.
Yep, use Torque Pro app and a suitable wireless OBD reader ($20 ish from Amazon) and enjoy massive amounts of data. Most modern cars drop accelerometer data through the OBD II port.
Edit: swapped the link & name of app.
Textra is really great, it has the full feature set you find in the stock Samsung app (including quick reply), but also features a pop-up notification for replying to a message in the context of the thread. The app is by far the fastest messaging client I've encountered, has extensive color/sound/appearance/notification customization, and the team is constantly rolling out new features. Highly recommend.
Shamelessly plugging Signal (android, ios).
It works great, has basically all the features of hangouts/imessage/messenger, and is open source, secure and audited.
Everyone should be using this. It's a gift to mankind.
My friend group has had no problems transitioning to it (edit: well ok, the non-techies moaned about a new app but came around)
I'm enjoying using signal as my new texting app. Encrypted texts and calls to other signal users. The app handles messaging much like imessage. People who don't have the app get regular sms and it automatically switches when it can.
Not a gallery app, but I think Signal (Android, iOS) would be great for this. Built in camera, conversations are encrypted end-to-end, as well as at rest if you set a passphrase for the app. A bonus is end-to-end encrypted messages all the time, not just for photos. Encrypted voice/video calls are also supported.
The other bonus is that because all the photos are encrypted at rest within Signal, no other apps are going to be able to access them, period (unless of course you decide to export the photos to your camera roll).
I know this isn't the gallery app you were looking for, but I think it's going to be your most private/secure option.
Android phones can use the firefox app, which also allows extensions, just like the desktop version.
Get yourself Firefox and Ublock Origin.
Never deal with an ad again.
I hear that firefox for android can use ublock origin. I haven't tried firefox mobile personally (I don't like browsing the web on my phone) but I hear good things about it. ublock origin I can vouch for though.
I can't wait to be downvoted to oblivion by the Google Duo fans, but I would suggest Signal:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/signal-private-messenger/id874139669?mt=8
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms&hl=ro
Do not use the Facebook app. I repeat, do not use the Facebook app. Ever. That thing is a Trojan horse. If on Android, use something like Metal which needs almost no permissions as it is a wrapper for the browser version of Facebook.
Signal Private Messenger by Open Whisper Systems.
Open source software, peer reviewd, has end-to-end encryption, offers private messaging and private calling.
Check it out.
I'd gladly pay $1 or even $10 if it wasnt part of facebook and didnt store my data.
Hope more people leave whatsapp and come on board to Signal
Can you recommend any ODB2 readers that:
1) Allow me to leave them plugged in continuously without draining battery when the car is off
2) Support Android phones via Bluetooth
3) Support the Torgue Pro app (or an app with similar functionality).
4) Are reasonably affordable (below $30).
This is the 1st time I've heard about this, and while it seems interesting to try I want to make sure I buy a reader that supports all the functionality I would like.
It is too bad that they didn't mention Signal which is by far the best encrypted messenging and voice chat app right now, imo.
It flawlessly integrates with your text messages, so if one of your contacts has the app your messeges are now encrypted.
Signal by Open Whisper Systems for messaging. It's like iMessage for Android and also has encrypted calls. Handles regular sms but sends encrypted messages to friends who also use it. Also lets you send audio and video files up to 100mb. Recommended by Edward Snowden and Bruce Schneier. It's available for iPhone as well, and there's an addon for Chromium / Chrome in beta.
Everyone should be using this as their default sms app.
Signal Private Messenger was released this week for Android, complementing its iOS companion.
What is it? Signal is on one hand an excellent SMS client (material design, quick reply, color-assigned contacts), but also a private IM service. So you can send normal SMS messages to contacts without the app, or Signal messages to those who do have it.
What's so great about it? It's iMessage for Android! Like Hangouts and iMessage, it sends messages over WiFi or cellular data, so you can still send texts without cellular reception. The kicker for me is that it runs on the TextSecure protocol, so all messages are encrypted and private. If you care, Edward Snowden approves.
If the recipient doesn't have Signal, the text will send as regular SMS.
Other cool features: private phone calls with other Signal users, and an upcoming Chrome companion app to text from the desktop.
The Challenge The drawback of course is getting other people to use it, which is partly why I'm writing this post. The app works great, but the primary feature of messages over data only works if other people have the app. Check it out and give it a spin, I really think this should be the next big thing in text communications.
Private, secure, instant messaging // SMS support // Material design
OP I'd really appreciate a shout out to Signal / TextSecure. It is a valid choice for SMS replacement even if you have nobody on your contact list who uses Signal for secure messaging.
It has no ads and is 100% open source (including server side components) and is 100% open specifications (Whatsapp has reportedly implemented the TextSecure protocol within its walled garden). I think it is the single best messaging platform out there today.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
It'd be nice to see support for free and open source development in general.
I highly recommend trying out Metal. It's a facebook and twitter client very similar to Tinfoil but loads better. It even does notifications.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nam.fbwrapper
If your dad has an Android device and still has a CEL (or just likes to mess around with his car) get him one of these and this app
Mine went missing, but any time my CEL went off or i just wanted to see what my engine was doing it was nice to have.
The App is also 1000x times easier to use than a real scantool with a lot more information packed in. It even googles the CEL codes for you.
The best thing ever though, you can reset the CEL with it when you fix the problem.
But take the CD out of the box before you give it to him, that CD has more viruses than a public toilet in a truck stop.
This is because the Google Messages app has identified this number as an automated number. However, they're not correct 100% of the time.
If you want to reply anyways, you will need to download a different SMS application that won't block you from replying. I'd recommend Textra, but any app will do. As you say you're on a Huawei device, you could also try the SMS app that came with the phone.
Of course, this is only temporary and you can resume using Google Messages later, it is my SMS app of choice as well.
This is completely separate from Samsung. This uses the Android Messages app, not the default one that came with your phone, so you'll have to download that one and set it as your default (make sure you're on the latest version if you already have it installed, should be 3.3.044). You'll find the option under the three dot menu in the top right corner when you're on the main screen that lists all your conversations.
Textra is really good. You can even get emojis for different OSes.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.textra
Lots of people seem to like YAATA too but I've never tried it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rpkandrodev.yaata
yup there's no way to use firefox on android. im a dummy.
edit: is mozilla still homophobic or are you referring to their homophobic ceo they got rid of 5 years ago?
The default messaging app isn't the same for all Android devices. So to clarify for the OP:
Android Messages : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
The last commit on Github was in March 2017, and none of Velazcod's other projects have been updated recently.
Iirc he started working for Google around late 2016, he might be concentrating on that.
I think Metal For Facebook is based on Tinfoil, if you're looking for a replacement.
SMS app. It's open source and utilisies 256 bit end to end encryption between users. The most secure way to text. Get everyone to get it.
Have you tried Metal?
It replaces the facebook and messenger apps. I installed it a few weeks ago and my s6 battery lasts all day, up from 2 charges to get through the day.
*Edit I just saw your comment further down that you are indeed trying it out. It takes a little getting used to, but is an acceptable substitute for the official app.
I use Folder Sync over WiFi. The first time it syncs, it may take some time, but after that it only syncs changes. I have a schedule set up to sync each night. It provides error reporting and logging if there are issues with the transfer.
Signal. It's a nice lightweight app that uses material design. You also have the ability to send encrypted SMS/MMS to others who use the app. HD voice calling is free too! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
Beautiful little sms app, lightweight and pretty, turns on end to end encryption by default when you text other Signal users
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
I moved from Tinfoil to Metal after some recent issues. You may want to take a look into it. I believe there were some... uh... issues with Tinfoil, though it's been a while.
$85 is insane! You can get a Bluetooth OBDII scanner for $10 on Amazon, and get the Torque app on android for around $3. As far as I can tell, that's identical functionality for $13 bucks.
EDIT:
Yall requested links, so here you go:
I installed the "Lightning Home" launcher replacement, and made it not my default, then I created a homescreen of my most useful Torque widgets and common controls for driving, like a subsonic widget, and maps. I have tasker set up to open the app when I connect to my car's bluetooth and put the phone in my QI charging dock.
If there's going to an iMessage for Android finally, it is going to be Android Messages (the SMS app, previously Google Messenger). It already supports RCS but your carrier needs to support RCS too, since RCS doesn't use mobile data - it uses the actual mobile networks. It is like the next-generation SMS.
Coincidentally, Apple has not yet indicated any support for RCS.
any alternative to folder sync to automatically sync certain folders from cloud services (owncloud/webdav) to my device?
Preferably a good filemanager should be integrated too. Especially something with a good design would be nice.
Signal. SMS with folks who don't have the app, secure private chat with those that do. Recommended by the EFF.
Signal looks pretty slick now. Readers, if you haven't tried it yet please give it a try:
On Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
and iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/app/signal-private-messenger/id874139669
I use Textra! Way back when I had a jailbroken iPhone, I used the messenger app called biteSMS. These guys are the same developers. Quick reply, quick compose, send delay, emoji, and more!, and very clean and minimal.
To block this spam in android, just block them from the sms app. If your sms app doesn't allow blocking this, then install another sms app and make it as default sms in android settings.
I personally use the Google messages in my Samsung phone. Installed it just so I can block mkn 😜😜
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
I'm partial to Android Messenger. It used to be called Google messenger or something like that, but it's clean and simple IMO.
Just to echo what some others have said, getting an old Samsung phone to experience Android isn't really a great option. Samsung heavily skins over stock Android to make it "their own". Other companies like Google's own Nexus devices, Motorola, Sony, and Blu tend to stick much closer to stock Android, and the experience is much cleaner, simpler, faster, and less buggy.
I would recommend getting rid WidgetLocker -- it's always been a hack, and it will continue to be. For security reasons, Google doesn't actually allow apps to replace the lock screen.
For playing music, try Google's own music app. You can put the files on your phone, or upload them into Google's cloud (recommended) and the app integrates very nicely, adding music controls to the lock screen, notifications, etc.
Also, grab Google's Messenger app for SMS. Samsung's version is quite buggy.
So on the 3 dots you have on the upper hand corner of the pic you posted, click on it and click edit or it may say people and options. Then on the bottom of the page it has a little paint coater thingy maggigy that painters use... The pallet! I forgot the name of it lol. Anyways that's how you change it on mine and I use Google's messenger app cause its more flat and prettier for me.
Anyways here is a little album
Signal or Wire. Wire's got a bit more polish on it, so you might try that. (I usually use Wire with my wife; I've got a Samsung Galaxy S5 running LineageOS version of Android; she's got an iPhone 6.)
Edit: Both Wire & Signal also have desktop clients (Windows, Linux, Mac) as well as Android & iOS apps.
Both are also free, open-source, and secure/encrypted - where these last two things are – I think – rather important.
Its not unknown, but I've never seen it mentioned on this subreddit. Folder Sync. Syncs local files with almost any cloud storage of your choice
You can set the syncing interval, 1way or 2 way, destination cloud or local folder, etc. Very helpful to backup PDFs I get through whatsapp.
"Torque" can do what you want, I just found it, and it supports skins, thank god, obd 2 support, HUD mode, and I think it does do navigation as well
That is the AOSP messaging app. I guess some manufacturers (Motorola?) still ship it but otherwise Google has switched to their own messenger app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
Most ads are outside of the control of the site, and are served by ad vendors based on what they think you'd be most likely to click on, based on metrics they have about you from tracking information. Gamepress can't do anything about it.
I highly recommend using the Brave browser for Android to avoid ads. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brave.browser&hl=en_US
Weirdly, the reverse also applies as far as mms. Every video I get from someone with an iPhone looks pretty much like the gif. Like they took it using a toaster. No idea why.
But yeah, its ultimately down to RCS vs SMS/MMS. A handful of carriers let Androids use it with certain apps (Google Messages uses it) and the list is growing, no idea why they don't just fasttrack it or at least standardize the damn messaging app.
Every time WhatsApp is down I use the opportunity to tell people about Signal.
It's nice that the most popular messaging application is E2EE (end-to-end encrypted), but Facebook can still harvest the metadata and contact networks.
Signal is actually working on private contact discovery, which is pretty cool both technically and privacy-wise!
It is an excellent performance and diagnostic tool that connects to your vehicle using an OBD II Bluetooth adapter.
Some of the features include:
There is a free lite version available, but the pro version really is worth the money in my opinion as it has helped me quickly diagnose issues with my car a few times in the last year already.
I use Torque paired with a bluetooth-enabled reader, links the fault codes to a database that gives you an idea of what's going wrong, been pretty handy to have an idea of what's going on.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en
It's the stock Google messenger app for Android.
Edit: I'm getting downvoted for telling the guy what service it is? See for yourself: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging&hl=en
Textra is also another fantastic alternative. It's free with unobtrusive ads, but is well worth the $1 for its functionality. Scheduled texts, bruh.
Have you tried the Google [Android] app, Messenger?
I find it to be oodles better than Hangouts and I get my Google Voice messages via the call history log (which adds system notifications upon new voicemails). Plus, it works (usually) with Moto Assist/hands-free SMS receiving and sending.
Google Messenger is FAR better then Hangouts for simple SMS and MMS texting. Unless you really need the Google voice integration in Hangouts, I'd recommend it. Great material design, really fast/smooth, nice color customization, and simple.
You should assume they can see everything, same as any other ISP.
Use encrypted browsing. Use encrypted texts (i.e. Signal). That is how you protect your privacy. Not by trusting a company's privacy policy.
> SMS/Texting: Textra > Can't beat it. By far the fastest and most reliable app for SMS as of now. Depending on how the new Google Messages update performs, I might switch to that. But for now, Textra is great. > > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.textra&hl=en
I would also add Whatsapp and Signal if you want end-to-end encrypted messaging (Signal requires both users to have it to be secure - but also works well as regular SMS)
"Text anyone in your phone"
If only there was some way to do that already
Posting anything made by shitbook to this sub is almost like cheating. It's like posting pictures of Ajit Pai to /r/hittableFaces
I had a big purge of Facebook "friends" yonks ago due to this ... then came to my senses and stopped logging onto it at all.
And bloody hell and Android phone is quicker with all the facebook nonsense removed/disabled. Just install Metal if you still need access.
I just use the uBlock Origin add-on in Firefox. Mozilla's mobile browser actually runs pretty smoothly now. Mobile FF doesn't support as many add-ons as desktop FF, but it's great in a pinch.
Just download FF from the Play Store, open it, use it to navigate to the Firefox add-on website, install uBO, done. Mobile uBO doesn't have config options, unfortunately, so you may want to experiment with others.
You can import stuff from desktop Chrome to desktop Firefox, create a Firefox account, and that can sync to all your devices that use FF. I haven't found a way to directly import from mobile Chrome to mobile FF.
The Play Store allows for true third party browsers. So you can download Firefox, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox&hl=en
Firefox has third party extension support, just like on the desktop.
Textra or YAATA.
Textra: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.textra
YAATA: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rpkandrodev.yaata
YAATA you can literally customize pretty much everything about the app. Want square contact pictures instead of circle? Done. Textra is pretty on its own. But for function either one is great. YAATA I use personally.
Found the solution on my own. Textra SMS which I was already using as my default SMS client does it.
Long press on a conversation, select the conversations you want to export then press the 3 dots in the top right hand corner and choose Share as Email.
If you send it to yourself you get an attachment in .txt format with all your messages.
> Everything we do is open source and anyone is free to verify or examine the code for each release. Reproducible builds and other readily accessible binary comparisons make it possible to ensure the code we distribute is what is actually running on user’s devices.
They'll just target app publishers instead. They just have to issue Google with TAN (because they probably already have the infrastructure to do this) or TCN saying "You will replace the signed APK org.thoughtcrime.securesms with our own APK, that you will sign, and provide it specifically to user XYZ only" and bypass the issue all together. Hand-waving this attack vector by saying users can compile their own builds and side-load them or compare with official is pointless if the vast majority of users are obtaining this software via this channel and aren't verifying it beyond that.
Brave is a nice middle ground between Chrome and Focus. It comes with built-in adblocker, tracker blocker, and script blocker, just like Focus, but it's much better at managing multiple tabs and browsing history.
I also recommend giving plain old Firefox a try, especially if you use it on desktop. It allows you to install plugins! Currently, I'm using it with uBlock Origin and a few others. :)
Signal private messenger is sort of iMessage for Android : it will send SMS messages but if the other person has Signal as well, it switches to a secure private message , just like iMessage
For you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
For her: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/signal-private-messenger/id874139669
Signal Private Messenger. It encrypts your data. You can communicate with other people that use different apps so it replaced my default text app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms&hl=en
"Using Signal, you can communicate instantly while avoiding SMS fees, create groups so that you can chat in real time with all your friends at once, and share media or attachments all with complete privacy. The server never has access to any of your communication and never stores any of your data."
Signal - Secure encrypted texting/voice and video chat. Dump any text app you are using and switch to this immediately.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
This is correct. You wouldn't know. Install signal. If you are experiencing ongoing paranoid delusions you should seek psychiatric help.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms&hl=en
Edward Snowden preporuča Signal.
Koristis inace ko sms program, a ak netko ima isto signal onda su free poruke i fully encrypted.
It is actually the same app, previously it was named TextSecure (for texting), and redphone (for calls), but now they are merged in a single app called Signal. Here's a link from the playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
OK as someone who used textra quite a bit lately, is there a way to display a time stamp on each message that goes out and comes in? I didn't see them and I need that frequently for dealing with things for work.
I've switched over to signal and I really like it but miss the color/customization options.
Edit: Thanks guys! Damn no idea how I managed to miss that one.
Telegram is using weak, homemade crypto.
You should use Signal instead.
>A practical cryptanalysis of the Telegram messaging protocol, master's thesis by Jakob Jakobsen, September 2015
For everyone else who doesn't know what Textra is and is curious:
>Comes with a bunch of great features, notably 100+ material design theme / bubble / app icon colors, dark mode, floating Lollipop style notifications, scheduled SMS & MMS, delayed sending (stop while sending), slide to delete / call, quick snap camera, multi-select picture gallery, quick reply popup, better MMS GROUP messaging, 800+ flat style emojis, voice notes, 21 text size options, SMS blocker / blacklisting and auto video compression. > >Plus 'oh so easy' default or per contact customization for bubble colors, signatures and notifications (icon color, led color, sound, custom vibrations, privacy, reminders and muting). > >Protection from Stagefright! Video messages can contain an exploit called Stagefright that can harm your phone. Textra SMS protects by ensuring new video messages can not automatically run the exploit.
Here is the Play Store link to the app.
If you are looking for a secure messaging app, Textsecure is a secure messaging app suggested by Snowden himself.
The android app suuuuuuuuuuuuucks for syncing. It's unreliable, buggy, and only one way. The amount of times I've had it simply not detect files. For accessing your stuff, or for manually throwing something to your cloud, it's great, but the auto-sync feature is basically useless.
Use foldersync, instead, it supports nextcloud and has FAR better syncing, and is miles and miles more configurable.
As for performance, your nextcloud instance will probably tell you, go to settings>administration>overview. There might be a list of things that can be done to improve the servers functionality/performance.
OK, so everyone already knows about SIGNAL.
It's being almost ubiquitously recommended as the ethical alternative to Whatsapp with open source e2e encryption.
I still want to recommend it to people like me, who KNOW this but nonetheless, previously stuck to Telegram because they tried Signal a year or two ago and didn't like it because of Telegram's superior UI/UX/more professional logo.
I've finally tried Signal for the 2nd time when I read that it received chat wallpaper support with the latest update -- and I am happy to report it's great now.
It has dark mode, wallpaper support and you can adjust chat colors. You can honestly make the app look pretty great.
On top of that, with everyone switching I personally have more contacts on Signal now than I ever had on Telegram.
I know it's been preached as nauseum on this sub, but I still encourage everyone to get on board with Signal and if you like it, donate a few dollars to the foundation.
The only accurate, close-to-real-time statistics are probably Android downloads from the Google Play Store (scroll down to the bottom). Otherwise, we've so far only relied on official Brave updates from either blog posts or Brendan's Twitter account.
Anyone else with other methods, feel free to add!
Messages is a SMS app from Google.
It can send messages via Internet and media files too and also share seen option but only if your carrier supports that.
the iMessages is completely mentained by apple, but in case of android messages, Google can't operate it cause of some laws (I don't much about it) but it supports if your carrier supports.
you can read more in this article.
They did that to make it easier to use with one hand. If you want you can check out Google messages to see if it's any better for you. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging or you can scroll down in the Samsung messages app to see more messages
I don't think this is the official Signal app.
Make sure you're getting your app from the app store and that it's by OpenWhisperSystems
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.thoughtcrime.securesms
i just use a $12 obd2 dongle and Torque Pro on my phone.
I've cancelled MightyText. I've had reliability issues with group text messages.
I recommend Pulse SMS which is far more reasonable and has a lot of great features. It gets updated with new features at least a few times per week. I also prefer their web/chrome extension interfaces.
Metal unfortunately does not replace facebook - instead it allows for you to chat with people / view your feed on facebook without the constant 'install messenger' nag screen. I have not yet found a way to replace chat. It's not as tightly integrated as the facebook / messanger apps, but it gets the job done.

1) Mini Elm327 that works with Torque Pro app on Android. This one works: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Pro-V1-5-Mini-ELM327-OBD2-OBDII-Bluetooth-CAN-Scanner-for-TORQUE-ANDROID-/390910380627?hash=item5b04130a53
2) Torque Pro from Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en
