"The new Moto Camera app is optimized for 2016 Moto devices and integrated with Google Photos."
It's a bit worrisome that it doesn't just have a new name "Moto Camera" vs "Motorola Camera" but an entirely new play store entry:
com.motorola.camera vs com.motorola.cameraone.
I'm hoping there will be an upgrade path, I really like the more traditional interface (tap to focus) and the Google Photos integration, even if older devices don't get the full feature set (professional mode). At least it looks like camera api v2 is finally coming to the 2016 Motos. It also appears that it and its features aren't coming to the current gen Moto Xs.
I use Xposed + Twisty Switch on my 2013 Moto X, I don't know if that will work with a 2014 but it might be worth a try.
FWIW Updates to the Motorola Camera broke Twisty Switch, so you might need to remove all updates on the camera in order to get it to work. Or it might not work in any way.
EDIT If anyone ever checks back on this thread, I think I'd recommend the Tasker solution given below even though this is the top scoring post. I needed to create a Titanium Backup shortcut/widget to disconnect Motorola Camera from the Play Store so it doesn't get updated and break Twisty Switch, and I need to run this any time before I do automatic updates because the Play Store re-links it every day. The Tasker solution does get kinda weird (unless I'm doing it wrong, when I hit the back button from Google Camera it goes back to Motorola Camera, at which time Tasker launches Google Camera again, at which point I hit the back button a ton of times to get out of the loop), but I don't need to worry about Motorola Camera updates.
EDIT2: Make your Tasker task kill Motorola Camera first and then launches the Google Camera. Then things work smoothly.
Have you tried the Google [Android] app, Messenger?
I find it to be oodles better than Hangouts and I get my Google Voice messages via the call history log (which adds system notifications upon new voicemails). Plus, it works (usually) with Moto Assist/hands-free SMS receiving and sending.
If you make some kind of script to ping you notifications hourly, you can make it. Although I don't know how battery would suffer.
For example IFTTT Currency price android notification
For those on Lollipop or below, you can uninstall the app once you've toggled the tick box.
Edit: Just to get battery percentage.
LOL what? No it's not. Pixel 2 is a good inch taller and almost half an inch wider. Definitely not one-handed ease-of-use like the OG Moto X. I've had my hands on a lot of phones, but nothing fits the hand like the ergonomics of the Moto X.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8720&idPhone2=5601
I still use my 2013 Moto X, mostly for listening to music, but my Galaxy S7 has become my daily driver and is the first phone I felt I didn't have to root to customize my phone to what I wanted. This is closer to the size of the Moto X, but there's some things I miss about the Moto X that I wish were present in the S7 like the way it just felt.
Do you live in a B12 covered area? Any ideas if B12 actually activates (just VoLTE is missing currently) or if B12 is actually disabled? LTE discovery (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.simplyadvanced.ltediscovery) might help to figure this out.
Does the front flash work in snapchat and how is the quality while using snapchat?
Also you could use this app for battery percentage https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kroegerama.android4batpercent&hl=en
So long as you have Nova Launcher, you really should get the Tesla Unread thing to go with it. This will put unread badges on any and all apps you'd like.
Funny thing is I barely use that toggle because when I need a flashlight I want it right away, so I use Power Button Flashlight instead. Glad it was added though.
What I really like about lollipop is Smart Lock. I never used to use screen lock because I use my phone too much and it is annoying entering that every time. Now, I've setup encryption and a PIN lock because with Smart Lock I get to bypass that at home, at work and when I'm paired to my car bluetooth. That's where I'm at most of the time so when I'm out and most vulnerable to losing my phone it stays locked.
The rest is really just aesthetics at this point in terms of user experience.
you can use sms backup & restore. Make sure after you make your backup to move it to the cloud or to a PC prior to doing the reset. This will also give you the option to back up call logs.
USB OTG cable and a USB mouse. USB OTG cable should be like 10 bucks on Amazon. You can control the screen with the mouse.
edit: $4.20
Even without marshmallow the standby is awesome.
Last night I plugged it into a charger that I didn't realize wasn't plugged in. It lost under 1% an hour.
This is the first time I've owned a phone that can make it to 24 hours without a charge.
I charged the phone for an hour before leaving for work and now 9 hours later (with light use) I still have 70%+ in the bank.
Other things you should know:
The volume rocker acts as a shutter button in the camera App (double twist to launch).
The speakers might pop a little. Not while playing media or anything. Known issue, fix coming. Might not affect you anyway.
If you want the battery to show the percentage numerically, rather than just the depleting bar, you'll need this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kroegerama.android4batpercent
All the Moto apps are dope. Genuinely useful. It's weird for something that, anywhere else would be called bloat.
Now it's rock-to-wake :(
Also it seems pretty smooth so far for me as well. Digging it.
Only thing I don't like is the sound settings (no longer able to silent without a timer). Also don't enjoy HeadsOn notification but I installed this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.noheadsup&hl=en
Both of those things are Lollipop issues not anything with Motorola.
I've had issues like these before and something like BetterBatteryStats can help you figure out what was causing the wakelock if it happens again. You can download it for free on the XDA thread I just linked and, if you find it useful and/or want to support the developer, you can buy it on the Play Store.
Battery Percent Enabler:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kroegerama.android4batpercent&hl=en
Super simple. Can uninstall it after enabling it. Just changes a setting inside Android. Can't change colors or anything, but that's a fault of Android, not the app.
So I got the Sandisk Professional Ultra SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC Class 10.
I had thought that was top tier but I suppose I will try the one you recommend. You have apps on it and they run normally?
EDIT ok wow I am on Amazon now seeing much more expensive "professional" micro SD cards, that I missed when I bought the phone. I appreciate this, I hope it works! Thank you!
I also went for a 5x from a moto x 13. I do miss the smaller form, but I got used to it. It's not crazy big like the Pure. I also seriously missed active display, but luckily found Gravity Screen and it's a comparable replacement. Not exactly the same, but it's a lot better than using google's ~~stupid~~ broken ambient display.
The camera is way better than the 13, and you can't beat Marshmallow's Doze, which basically almost uses no battery when it's sitting undisturbed. The fingerprint scanner is also speedy and effective. And being a Nexus device, you're guaranteed security updates every month, and you get the newest OS right when it's available.
The only minor issue I have with the 5x is that the adaptive brightness is kinda dumb. It doesn't seem to ever know how bright it should be, and often is too dark or too bright. So I just turn it off and leave it at the lowest brightness, which is already bright enough.
My suggestion would be to get a 5x, try it out, and if you don't like it, you can always send it back. Both phones use nano sim cards, so you can just pop it into the 5x with no problem. Google has a good return policy, and you can also get it from B&H with no shipping and no tax (as long as you're outside of New York)
I had considered both the moto g '15 and OPX, but OP's support is complete garbage and the moto G's camera isn't so great.
Pushbullet should suit your needs for text from PC
Link me: PushBullet
Edit: guess that doesnt work here?
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pushbullet/chlffgpmiacpedhhbkiomidkjlcfhogd?hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushbullet.android&hl=en
this happened to me recently. I installed Smart Compass and it walked me through recalibrating it, and it works like a charm now!
Does this work here? Linkme: minima wallpaper
Edit: probably not. it's easily the most beautiful live wallpaper app I've ever seen that flows material design language, and even the free version is highly customizable. I tweaked this one myself so I'll try to figure out if I can export it if people are interested.
This comment thread addressed similar questions over Gizmodo's sources and accuracy. I'm inclined to think Gizmodo is full of crap.
Here's how it looks on 2013 Moto X when in meeting. Also I use this IFTTT recipe to make calendar events based on my Foursquare chek-ins so Moto Assist is very convenient for me :)
I'm also just transitioning to a Moto X from CM/various roms and am tempted to keep it unrooted for now. A couple thoughts on your questions:
Privacy Guard: I believe you are out of luck unless you use a different ROM.
Profiles, however, you can do. You could use Tasker, which would allow you a lot of control without root, including audio / app profiles, etc.
You could also use something like Audio Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.audiowidgetpro - that's the pro version but there is a free version as well) for just audio profiles. There is also a tasker/locale plugin for Audio Manager Pro.
A final alternative would be to hide your phone's rooted state from specific apps using xposed, if you choose to go back to a rooted condition: http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.devadvance.rootcloak
You could try Gravity Screen. It seems to work pretty well, but it seems like it breaks the fingerprint unlock process, so you'd have to enter the pin/passcode instead.
TextSecure from Open Whisper Systems. It's the only app Edward Snowden has explicitly mentioned as being effective against the NSA (afaik) and The Wallstreet Journal did a write up about the author a while ago.

This worked for me.
1) Go to Settings / Apps.
2) Swipe down until you find Google Play services. Tap on it. Tap on "Uninstall updates".
3) Go to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms and update Google Play services.
4) Reboot.
It's an issue with AMOLED screens, especially those like ours with onscreen buttons, because like you said... those pixels pretty much never change. Calling it burn-in is kind of a misnomer because it's really the exact opposite. Those pixels, as pure black, are just completely unused compared to the rest of the screen.
A utility I've started to use recently is Immersive Full Screen Mode. It's not a great solution to keep always-on because by hiding the nav bar, it also stops the keyboard from working, but otherwise it works fine and doesn't need root. Also, since my Moto X effectively functions as my car GPS, I can turn on Immersive Mode while in Waze (it freaks out with Google Maps) and thereby have both the nav bar and status bar disappear and the Waze Maps in full screen for hours at a time. I'm hoping this will even out the pixel damage.
On your computer go to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.ccc.ota&hl=en and it will show if your phone is ready for the update (make sure you're signed into the same google account as your phone)
FWIW, I've had the same issues, the strange thing is when using a different cable than the one that came with it ( for instance I plugged my Nexus 7 USB - MicroUSB plugged into the MotoX power brick) I was able to leave it flat and it charged just fine. However, going back to the MotoX cable it had to be angled.
as for the other issues you may need to see what all is running in the background processes. Since you're having issues with it charging double check to make sure that the phone says "plugged in and charging" and not "Plugged in, not charging"
third issue, I'd say maybe pointing to a full wipe, maybe look Watchdog and Battery Widget Reborn I've not used watchdog myself but seen posts using it. Hopefully others will have had more experience with similar issue to help you further if none of these help you out.
TL;DR - YMMV
Why is $400 starting price ridiculous? Why does that shock you?
Moto X 2013 launched @ $579.99 USD (later dropped to $399)
Moto X 2014 launched @ $499 - $549.99 USD

This will fix your imessage issue. Can confirm from personal experience.
As for the calls, I doubt they're related to imessage, but try this fix and see if they get better.
I had a hard time finding the full X1095 5.1 image, but found one here https://mega.nz/persistent/mega/bYIxFJ6S
Followed all the other steps and phone is back to normal but still missing the Stagefright patch. I'll worry about that later, I'm just happy to get a working phone back.
According to GSMArena, only Europe and India receive the 4GB RAM / 64GB storage variants (XT1900-5/7 or XT1900-2).
India even has a 6GB RAM / 64GB storage version.
I apologize for the confusion, I dug around and found out this is actually a Gravity Box feature that can be turned on. I didn't remember activating it.
The problem with looking at worldwide units is Motorola hasn't tried to market much outside of the U.S. China is the biggest market and they only just started marketing phones there.
Point taken, though... the comScore May 2015 Report shows that Motorola lags at 4.9% of the U.S. market.
Also, for the record... I haven't owned a Motorola phone since the Droid X, but I won't deny that I may have suggested the Moto X to others :)
Yea, for finding your phone, there seems to be better options. I haven't tried lookout yet, but it would seem to have better "find my phone" functionality.
When you say you rely on notifications from your phone to tell you how much power is left in the power pack, what does that actually look like? Does it say "your power pack has 10% power left" - or what?
My main concern with this is the size. I use a mophie juice pack on my current iphone, and while it makes the iphone much bigger, it isn't an awkward shape. I keep my key chain pretty small, so this power pack micro may be something I only carry around on occasion when I really need it (traveling, night out, etc.).
Do you think the issue with bluetooth on your 2013 will be alleviated with a 2014 moto x? I guess you wouldn't know just yet! But it would seem to make sense that it most definitely, 100% works on a 2014 moto x.
Since bluetooth is flaky, is it just as bad at finding your keys versus the other way around (using pack to find phone)? I actually rarely lose my phone (and if I do there are multiple ways to find them from calling it to the lookout app i described above, etc.), but with my keys, if I lose those, the only way I can find them would be searching endlessly or using this thing. That actually seems like a major value add for me at times, although i'm much better at putting my keys in the same spot every day when I get home.
On daisy chaining, the marketing language on the power pack micro says "You can save time by charging your phone and Power Pack at the same time too." - isn't that what you mean here?
It's actually a form of ad from AdSense (I know) where the ads run a javascript code that create the pop-up. I ended up using Disconnect Mobile to avoid it from occuring again.
This will do you right:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
You can get the firmware here: http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1
Make sure you flash back to the stock rom you were previously on. So if you were on 4.4.4 on an xt1053, like I was, use XT1053_TMO_RETAIL-US_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.29.1_2_cid9_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
Let me know if you have any questions/run into any issues!
I pulled this from a nexus 5 and installed it on my Moto x with no issues. Only thing is, you gotta restart the launcher to get the widget to show up.
You can also record sound with Google Keep, plus you can access it from the browser as well and its also synced to your Google account. app: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=google%20keep browser: https://keep.google.com
Recently replaced my Moto X Pure (myself), and shortly after ended up replacing my wife's X Pure screen as well. It wasn't difficult imo, especially the second time around. I got the screen from EBay, and this is the most important tip, you have three purchase options, just the screen, the screen+digitizer or screen+digitizer+bezel (matching color of course). Only purchase that third option, I missed that option the first time and the bezel was the most difficult aspect of the first replacement. Other than that, you can find YouTube clips and ifixit articles that will give you the step-by-step. You can get a tool kit via Amazon. I would suggest this one (https://www.amazon.com/Foxnovo-Multifunctional-Screwdriver-Cellphone-Computer/dp/B00FS9J1EY). (Additional tip; I found that most my screws utilized the T-3 screw head from that kit, additionally each phone had a few random T-4 screws with no rhyme or reason. So that kit is good because you get both T-3 and T-4. Screws are delicate, take it easy and you'll be fine. If the T-3 is loose, that's when you jump up to the T-4.)
Cost me just over a $100 to fix two screens, including the tools, so the savings is significant.
Good luck with whichever option you choose, sending it off or self repair!
It seems to be hit or miss as to which chargers will give us turbo/quickcharge speeds on this phone. I'm not sure why ones that say they'll do QC 2.0 or in this case 3.0 (backwards compatible with 2.0) wouldn't charge particular phones. I bought this one by Anker and it works great and gives me the fast speeds, at least out of the top port. I don't need two ports so I don't know about the bottom one because I haven't used it, but I think that's just a standard port. I just got it on someone's recommendation and it's not like an extra port hurts.
There is a free app called Ampere that shows you how many mA you're pulling, what the voltage is, what the battery percentage is, what the temperature is, what the battery health status is, and if that's all Greek or useless to you - what the charge rate is. I'm looking at it right now as I charge for example and in the Charge Rate field it says "turbo". So that would seem to be an easy way to test it if it wasn't obvious by just watching your battery meter. Mine is pulling 2,000 mA.
I don't know much about cables other than that the ones you bought say in their Amazon description that they're Quickcharge 2.0 compatible, so that's presumably not the problem.
If yours isn't working, return it and try the one I got and cross your fingers.
Hey is your phone rooted and ROM'd by the way? Mine's not, and I think I've seen people saying that that can matter, though I'm not sure why. Just another variable for your investigation.
On the issue of unsecured public WiFi, get yourself a VPN! I pay $40 annually for Private Internet Access VPN service which keeps me safe but also allows me to switch to Canadian and UK servers so I can view different content on Netflix :)
You could take a look at your environment & connection with Wifi Analyzer to see if there's something obviously wrong with your environment, but otherwise it's hard to say.
I have always noticed that my Moto X Pure gets uncomfortably hot while playing graphically intense 3D games. As a matter of fact, the other night I downloaded and played Shooty Skies and noticed that my phone was pretty hot after about 15 to 20 minutes of play. But then it doesn't get warm at all emulating GBA games.
It had been like that when I was on a stock ROM and continues even with Lineage OS. I really think it might just be how the phone handles heat. It has never shut itself down due to the heat, so I'm not terribly concerned about thermal failure or anything. But it is slightly unnerving to hot a phone that hot for a long period of time.
Check out the Asus File Manager. I prefer to connect over wifi- in the app there's a button to make your phone available to a PC, which gives you an local IP to type into your browser, which then has a very respectable file management system. I find it more reliable than a USB connection at least, and speed is excellent.
I used this years ago to save my SMS, no clue if it works in Marshmallow though. Worth a shot, I think you can save to Dropbox or Drive.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
It sounds like the quick charger is usually the first to go out, I've had lots of luck using other standard USB cables from prior phones.
I have no clue whats going on, but you can send her the apk to install by sharing it with this app. I would post the apk here but Moto sends DMCA's for links to their apps.
Check out AwSMS. I like it way better than Textra and there are reports of people claiming Textra eats battery up and makes the phone run hot here. AwSMS has pretty much everything Textra has plus more and I personally think it looks a lot cleaner.
With Accubattery, you can set your phone to notify you when it has reached a user specified percentage of charge. No root required for the app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digibites.accubattery
There are alternative apps that do the same thing as the Moto features. Try this one, for example.
You'll have to turn off the gestures in Moto first.
Yea, that really bothers me too. I think there's a no root method of switching the behavior of the capacitive nav buttons?
This app works without root as well but it's probably not as good of a solution as with root. I'm hoping there's a root method developed that doesn't trip knox.
UCCW has widgets for days. UCCW link
Just used this app to see, and I'm afraid it isn't, none of the options are supported with the build I'm using (though it may be different with US builds, as I know there are some differences between the US and European builds).
Twist for camera can be added to any phone using the app Camera Twist. I used it after moving from the Moto X to the Nexus 6.
On mine I use the Outlook app just for my corporate exchange emails. It works flawlessly and I have no complaints so far. :)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.office.outlook
Download "manual camera" compatibility test from the play store and it will give you a check list if it fits the requirements
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.vipek.camera2_compatibility_test
Only devices that use the new camera2api will pass. Thank you so much in advance from all of us non-brazilian pure members.
While its not quite as easy to read as just a simple number display, i use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kroegerama.android4batpercent to tweak a setting that displays the battery percentage inside the default battery indicator on your status bar. Very helpful and i like that its just a small tweak and not an actual program running in the background. Works on kitkat but even better on lollipop
I use Ringquis to make ringtones and alarms. Moto X doesn't offer native support for it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baquis.ringquis
If you have an alarm set, you can tap it in the upper left of the notification shade to open the Clocks app. Otherwise, there is no other shortcut to the app.
CF.lumen. The rooted version does such a great job of adapting colors as the time changes. Makes using your phone in the evenings and dead of night so much more pleasant. The non-rooted version of any app like this just applies a orange/red filter over the screen which looks terrible.
I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and I really like.
The overall design is pretty great and I like the grey fabric-type material used for the ear piece and case. The case, which keeps it charged up, is small enough to keep in a pocket, which is good because the Hint is so small it would be easy to lose it if you just set it down somewhere. I tend to not like in-ear earbuds for comfort reasons, but the Hint is pretty comfortable in my ear and stays in place very firmly. Audio quality is more than good enough for podcasts and not bad for music.
IMO it really wins in the convenience department. The earpiece quickly/automatically turns on and connects to my phone when I put it in my ear and then turns off again as soon as I take it out. Paired with an Android Wear watch I can choose what audio to play, skip past commercials, and change volume without touching my phone. It is great for cycling or working in the yard or kitchen where my hands are busy. It's small enough in my ear that I don't feel weird wearing it while shopping or riding on a train. I've taken a few calls on it and haven't had problems with being heard, but I'm not confident the mic is all that great.
Paired with an app like Touchless Notification, which reads your new notifications to you as they come in, and there are even fewer instances where you have to interact with your phone. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hu.viczian.notifications.free&hl=en
Um guys there's an app called Darker which addresses this problem. I've been using it since the past month and it works as it should.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mlhg.screenfilter
It has never worked for me. I use Pushbullet to do the same thing, works pretty well except that it splits up long messages into multiple short ones which can look weird on the receiving end.
This isn't the primary use case for Pushbullet, it's an incredibly useful app for other reasons to. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushbullet.android&hl=en
Ofcourse you can. Install Auto Input and you can automate the touch sequences. Watch some youtube videos from the developer if you need some tutorials.
That's been there since the 1st Kitkat Update. I meant full control in setting the ISO, Shutter Speed, Focus, and maybe FStop. If you're willing to try it out you can use this APP to test if the current build has the new Camera API.
This.
And, why does everyone move files the hard way?
Here's how I do it. So simple, fire up the ftp server, move the files, shut down the ftp server.
Try using Helium. The features you'd need are free and since you're not rooted, you just need to install the proper drivers for your machine to back up files to your computer.
You need to download this app here and then you should be able to go to Nova settings - gestures and buttons - double tap - apps - then select turn off. And BAM! You're done.
It has a great battery and I don't find myself concerned either. However, I still like to know it's status and actually went the other route. Instead of hiding it, I increased visibility of the icon with Battery Percent Enabler. It enables the hidden system setting to put the percentage on top of the battery and can be uninstalled after use. This is great since it doesn't use any extra resources or running services like so many others
Location services can attempt to locate you based on Wifi using the method explained here. In this case, you do not need to be connected to the internet via wifi, but wifi has to be enabled.
It's possible that broken GPS is part of the problem, but more likely it's game bugginess and server issues.
I think you caught the iMessage bug
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-fix-apples-imessage-bug/
seems to happen to some users when coming from Apple, their phones still try to use iMesssage to communicate with you.
1.) Photostream - I used Dropbox & Google + private Autophoto back ups (this is overkill you really only need one). At night when I'm on my home WiFi & plugged into the AC adapter my phone does all the work in the background.
2.) Transferring over your contacts to an android takes under 5min http://www.androidmeup.com/en/news/how-to/transfer-your-existing-iphone-contacts-to-your-new-android
3.) As for iMessage, make sure you turn it off before as theyve been known to go into a black hole once you switch phones (sometimes for a while even after the features been turned off). Apple's actually being sued over this http://mashable.com/2014/05/19/apple-imessage-lawsuit/ All things considered Google Hangouts (SMS alternative to iMessage) works great, I've never had an issue and we've got all the same emojis ;).
4.) iTunes might be the only thing lacking from what youve listed as concerns. I use spotify so it wasnt really an issue for me. I actually prefer the "Play Music" android app because you can simply drag and drop music directly into your phones music folder. (This is great when I want an album on the road for free, I have an android torrent app and can download it directly into my music folder)
Last but not least my main reasons for switching were better hardware & more software freedom. I love the large minimalist screen, especially when watching videos. When it comes to freedom & customization the iOS UI thats been incrementally updated with new pretty icons doesnt even come close to the anadroid customization. The other app that absolutely love is Play books which allows me to upload my own PDFs, & epubs, book marking not only between android devices but also on google play books web page.
The dude above me has a point, a few of the iOS 8/OS X integration features look great, but it's nothing I'll be losing sleep over.
Agreed. I believe they tend to first put out the printed version before the electronic version. However here is the link to section on smartphones.
I have never used it, and I don't know if it supports the extra IR sensors on the X, but I found WaveUp on F-Droid the other day.
Not hard at all! There's a great teardown here: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola+Moto+X+Teardown/16867
I actually started by getting a thumbnail under the back cover down by the USB port. One side popped free, then the other, and I simply slid my nail around the perimeter until all the snaps came out. (a plastic guitar-pick-type tool would work better for this.) Then, I tried to open it like a book, taking care not to pull out the ZIF connector for the flash (it's on the side with the buttons). The adhesive will give you a bit of resistance, but you can keep pulling (carefully!) or use a warming bag like iFixit does.
I'd love to see what you do! I saw references to soldering instructions on XDA, but the image links were broken.
Then definitely send that in for repair! I hate it when I can't increase my volunteer level :-) Kidding aside, you could possibly replace the broken part yourself if you don't mind seeing the guts of the MotoX http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Motorola_Moto_X
If you're rooted, get Greenify. It allows you to hibernate apps that are causing wakelocks. /u/civiltribe linked you apps to show you the wakelocks; Greenify will keep them from waking your device and draining your battery.

It looks very good. The enamel seems hard-wearing and the diamond is cool. If you google NFC ring you will find the guys who did a kick starter one - but it doesn't look as nice inmo. Now how well this works is another matter but it cost £10 shipped. I will report back if you want...
Here is a link to the Google App if people need it!
I'll try to dig into the Google App a bit more and see if I can find differences between the two versions... it would be nice to have like an xposed module that would allow it for us Moto X users
Biggest issue is that Google pro-guards their APK's, meaning that if you de-compile the APK, the code inside is obfuscated making it tougher to understand quickly, but if I get a bit of free time I'll look into it more seeing how you seem to be passionate about the issue!
I got Xposed running on my n5 (for experimentation) and everything is working great so far. This is the module I mentioned. Battery saver mode works very poorly on my n5 but so does everything these days...the Moto x runs much smoother but I'm going to wait a little to put Xposed on that.
It provides a lot of features that custom ROMs do without having to leave your current ROM or flash anything as complex. It allows you to install Xposed modules on your phone. Gravitybox is a popular one that adds a bunch of features.
I made a post about this a few weeks ago and a working solution to get true OK Google with always listening. The best solution is an xposed module called OkGoogleNowTriggerIntent. Let me know if you need more information than that.
The App Settings module allows you to set the full screen property for an app to "Immersive" which hides it at all times with the swipe down to show. I use that for Facebook. I use Force Translucent KitKat on Chrome, GSearch, and Reddit Sync.
I highly recommend getting the developer edition of you want to root or do anything custom. It's worth it IMO.
You will need to root and do the Xposed mod on an unlimited plan. http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.dym.motoxtether
I apologize for the confusion, I dug around and found out this is actually a Gravity Box feature that can be turned on. I didn't remember activating it.
Indeed.
Here are the steps I performed:
After running KingRoot a million times for it to eventually give you temporary root.
Immediately unlock your bootloader via Sunshine 25$
This will wipe your phone and do a reset.
After you unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery. TWRP works wonders.
After you install a custom recovery flash a custom ROM (where you then can either have root installed automatically or you can flash root yourself).
I can write up a more detailed response later if you'd like. I'm kind of busy at the current moment, but I didn't want to leave you hanging.
But that said, those are basically the steps I performed I did to unlock my phone. I'm pretty glad I did it because otherwise I'd be stuck on 5.1 till I got a new phone. I'd rather not do that so I've been doing the custom ROM thing till I decide to upgrade.
Ahh. Another issue I discovered. The latest TWRP for mxp does NOT support encryption yet. I've talked to the maintainer and he said he's going to look into it and have a fix for it in the very near future. If you feel like it, PM Hashbang173 on xda forums, he's the one that maintains the motox TWRP builds.
ninja edit You can boot into TWRP and do a "sideload" to flash the root zip file. I had to do this.
ninja edit #2
How do I use ADB sideload?
Have a recovery installed on your device that supports ADB sideload like TWRP 2.3 or higher Have newer ADB binaries installed on your computer. If it's been a while since you installed ADB on your computer, you may need to get the latest ADB binaries in platform-tools from the Android SDK. You will need version 1.0.29 or higher (1.0.32 or higher is required for TWRP versions 2.8.2.0 and higher). You can find your current version by typing "adb version" at the command line. Set the device into ADB sideload mode. In TWRP you do this by going to Advanced then ADB Sideload. From the command line, type adb sideload /path/to/rom.zip From: https://twrp.me/faq/ADBSideload.html
Yes except use this instead of supersu and use this version of twrp

It's new but seems to be working well for me. Already seeing a much more horizontal line on the battery graph when idle.
Nope. Magisk can be set up to 'hide' root from certain applications. However it does modify your boot image when you flash it, so you'll have to re-flash it every time you update Lineage.

Are you sure you're not just seeing Android file transfer? Also, are you running OS Yosemite? The download website for MDM mentions compatibility up to Mountain Lion.
Before I get into the details, please note that you can run Plex on your main desktop. You don't need a dedicated computer for this. I just chose to put it on my NAS to consolidate my cloud services.
Here's a link to the downloads page
Now to answer your question.
I can access Plex over 3G/4G, yes.
You need to open port 32400 on your router, and port 32443 if you plan on using https to connect via web browser. (You also need to know your public IP address if you're going to access plex directly from your browser, which you can find by going to "www.whoer.net" or "www.whatismyip.com". This address will change from time to time if you don't pay for a static IP address from your ISP).
Another way to access your stuff via web browser is to go to the web app. This way you can access your media without knowing your IP address (or if you ISP changes it on you)
The Plex app for Android and iOS has a settings to allow you to stream over 3G/4G.
I hope this helps.
No. But you can use USB otg to do it.

Edit: doesn't seem to support charging with a y cable however. That seems to be dependent on a custom kernel. Sorry.
Here, find one matching to your model and locale, it should work.
