Since you mentioned less resource hogging, I am not mentioning JSwarts,CAF,NoChromo.
While I know this doesn't directly answer your question about the AOSP browser, I can offer an alternative:
Lightning Web Browser is a minimal browser that's really just a frame for the system WebView, but also offers typical browser features such as tabs, bookmarks, and some more fine-grained control over privacy features you might appreciate.
If it came down to that browser versus someone else's repackaged AOSP browser -- or something pulled from a different ROM -- I would recommend Lightning.
And if you like it, you can always go ahead and disable Gello. :)
(PS: Lightning is also available via F-Droid)
The reason any of that kind of ad blocker shows up so high in the battery and network monitors is because of the way that android monitors. The all the apps on your phone pass their Internet use through the adblocker, so android can't distinguish between what's being used by the adblocker itself and what's being used by the other apps.
But as someone else said, a browser with adblock is a good option, and then choosing / paying for your apps wisely is a good bet.
I believe listening browser has adblock, and is generally a very good browser.
If you feel you can't afford to pay for apps, you can try to earn some credit from Google Opinion rewards to get them for free.
Edit - I can't spell so the bot got the wrong one, so https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Linkme: lightening browser, google opinion rewards
While it's not Chrome, I find Lightning's inverted rendering option good for darkness. Here's a screenshot from today's news.
It's common for a browser to drain battery on mobile. However, you could try lightweight browsers. They have less features, very quick, and a bit ugly if you ask me. Here are a few:
Lightening Web browser https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Naked Browser https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
Two recommendations over what you currently use:
Lightning Browser for flash support over Dolphin and FX File Explorer over ES. Both of those apps have had issues with spyware/data mining in the past.

Lightning Browser, open source (tip: pro version is free on F-Droid): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
> I am aware of whatsapp but would prefer one that acts like a normal text based application without having to convince people to get another app.
I don't get what you want. Just an alternative SMS app? QKSMS, open source:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moez.QKSMS
SMS is no way actually secure (secure as in encrypted).
There are a couple of actually secure messagning apps (Signal, Telegram) but none of these send normal SMS, so you can only send messages to those who use them.
Take a look into Lightning Browser, there's a free version (no ad-blocking I believe if installed from Play Store, but F-Droid version does) and a paid version (with Ad-Block).
It's open source, one of the fastest browsers I've used, and a decent amount of customization.
this one? I've been testing it a bit, but sometimes it feels slower than the Yu Browser. Both feel very much slower than stock chrome on a Huawei P8 lite
Same here. You're just going to have to use a different browser like Lightning Browser for html5 videos until this issue is resolved. No problems there.
You could try something like Lightening Browser or Firefox with an addon, but as far as systemwide blocking without root, I don't think that's possible.
Also, since Chrome is busy with other tasks, you could download a fast, lightweight browser like Lightning to use for the next week ...it's in the Play Store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Lightning browser, fast, open source, has adblocker bulit-in, with the ability to add your own sources and on top all of that, under 15Mb. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Lightning Browser - Web Browser | 3.9 rating | Free | 1,000,000+ downloads | Search manually

Currently, im using Bromite. It's Chromium based with built-in adblock to make browsing faster. Besides that you could try Lightning Browser, though it's missing some important features. Or you could wait for Firefox Preview to finish and install it along with uBlockOrigin.
If you like Chrome, try Lightning Browser. It has dark mode, ad blocking (on paid version), it's like 5-10 mb in size and blazing fast.
Or you can try Samsung Internet, which has dark mode and ad-block extensions. It has some swipe gestures like switching to next tab.
Other than these two, I really don't recommend any browser. Chrome lacks dark mode (and tons of sh.t), FF is not faster than the above in Android. It's only bonus is extension support.
I notice there are now two on the market with a similar name.
Lightning Web Browser -- I believe this is the original?
Can someone clarify?
I'm unfamiliar with an "open app command from tasker", did you mean you tried doing a Launch App action followed by the Send Intent action?
I get the same behavior, in both Chrome and Lightning. Maybe it's a standard Android API thing?
There are a few options but the best one I've tried is Lightning Web Browser. Unlike Chrome, this app is actually designed for both Android and Android TV which makes installation and usage easier. Lightning Web Browser is only about 2 MB in size so it's very efficient and that helps on Android TV devices with less RAM such as the Google Nexus Player.

Lightning Web Browser It doesn't have a bubble feature, but it has a full screen mode and tracking protection, and the premium version comes with an ad blocking option in the settings. If you really want to block ads, the best thing to do would probably be to root your device and get AdAway, maybe even flash Xposed and get MinMinguard. I use both of them and recently switched from Chrome to Lightning; I'm never going back!
Sort of. There's Adblock Plus, but that only works if you're on WiFi, which partly defeats the purpose of using an Adblock. There's also AdAway, and it works on all networks and apps, but it requires root.
If you don't have root, you could use a browser which has ad blocking built-in, such as Lightning Browser.
I'm kinda late but Lightning Browser is incredible small and is pretty well packed. My only gripe is that offline mode (save pages) works only in the paid version. Does the Linkme bot works here? Anyways, here is the link:

Just to try: Linkme: Lightning Browser
I'm surprised that Lightning isn't there, it's a pretty nice material design and open source lightweight browser.
Differences between the normal and +/F-Droid version (That I can remember)
The developer is a student, so I recommend buying the + version to help him if you can.
I've been using Lightning browser for a long time, very satisfied with it.
Lightning. Free, blocks ads, has text reflow, extremely lightweight, highly customizable and even supports Tor.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
Honestly, if you can't take the plunge. Just use Chrome (stable, beta, or dev).
The most open source browser I can think of is Lightning Browser.
There's also automated unofficial builds of m46. Some features aren't showing up (AdBlock, Chrome sync, etc) in the most recent build (November). From reading the XDA thread, there are some issues with the upstream source code right now which are breaking more recent builds.
Ultimately, if you want to be able to trust the browser you're using, building from a safe source is the way to go. This XDA thread outlines how to build CAF m46 source.

A co-worker of mine made it. It's absolutely amazing if you're looking for a lightweight, safe browser. Link here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones
I think you meant Lightning Browser.
I like Lightning — it even has ad-blocking.

Bad bot! You linked the wrong one!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones&hl=en
Lightning does if I recall, but surely you can just use your back button?
Lightning Browser, small, very fast and has Ad blocker built in
Lightning browser does this too https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones&hl=en
/uj it's Lightning Browser and it's pretty okay
Hi, here's the thing about machines: we can't be saved from tracking on some levels, such as government spying and stuff. But about these concerns you have, I'd recommend some things like lightning browser (open-source, so safer) with Orbot if you really feel paranoid to use Tor, like I occasionally do. For the ads, get Adblock Plus (links to the latest version always), instructions here if your phone isn't rooted. Cheers!
Try Lightning Browser 👍
As I suspected, after doing some research, developers don't have any control over this sort of thing, it's handled by the browser. For mobile it looks like Edge and Lightning Browser are both AMOLED optimized but no such browser exists on desktop. If you would like to suggest this as a feature here are the best ways I found to submit an idea to Chrome and Firefox:
https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/
https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/#!forum/chromium-discuss
Lightning browser. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=acr.browser.barebones&hl=en
All the speed and optimization of the stock browser while having a ton of features.
Everyone should use the lightning browser - fdroid / lightning browser - play for a while and see how easy it is to access tabs and bookmarks (side drawers). No other mobile browser does this for some reason and I honestly don't know why.
I’m going to give a shout out to my friends app, Lightning Browser. He’s an incredible android dev and the entire browser is open source.
Will post links once I’m at my computer.

Lightning browser is too good & it is opensource too. Also has adblocker. Just < 3mb
