As more colorful alternative to Textra check out AwSMS. Tons of options for customization and you can set it up that every contact and the conversations have different colors. I think it fits the suggestions of OP better than Textra.
AWsms has a private inbox function that effectively serves as two separate inboxes on the same phone number, which may serve your purpose, use the private inbox for work and the standard one for home or vice versa?

Check out AwSMS. I like it way better than Textra and there are reports of people claiming Textra eats battery up and makes the phone run hot here. AwSMS has pretty much everything Textra has plus more and I personally think it looks a lot cleaner.
At least on the messaging app I use (AwSMS) I'm able to block and/or mute any message thread. I recall being able to mute threads in Hangouts as well.
> I wish there were a quick reply system like on iOS though. I think the feature is possible to implement with third party tools though but I haven't had the time to explore this.
I'm pretty sure that AwSMS has this feature built in
I use stock..
But if I had to use 3rd party again, AwSMS is my favourite. I used it on my previous phone all the time.
I tried Textra but I dunno... Just didn't quite do it for me.
Not really answering your question but im a big fan of AwSMS (believe that it's still in beta, but worka fantastic, nice gestures, smooth, advanced features but not over the top). Highly recommend.
Edit: link
Pretty much any app that has the option to be disabled can be safely disabled. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part disable to your hearts content. As for the messenger app, I personally prefer AwSMS. If you like the iOS style quick reply, you'll love this app :)
I use this in conjunction with all the apps below for a nice custom feeling stock experience. For those if you who don't know what this is, it does what the name says, it allows you to have custom quick settings on devices running Marshmallow.

AwSMS - The perfect SMS replacement.
Battlestation: Harbinger - If you like Sci Fi RTS' then you'll love this.
Card Crawl - A fun card game where you run through a dungeon full of peril and loot. You're only objective is to stay alive to the very end.
Focus - Francisco Franco's take on remaining the gallery app. With the turn for the worst that QuickPic has taken by going to the dark side I've been needing a new app and this works perfect. Free, with a small in app purchase to unlock a few extras, it has a beautiful interface and incredible amounts of potential to become the best gallery replacement app on the market.
FRAMED - Graphic novel noir style game where your character is running from panel to panel that you have to rearrange on the fly so they can avoid the police and get away to safety. The best .99¢ I've ever spent on a game.
Fresh - It's Stealthychief's newest app pack. Only 400 icons but the dude adds 10-15 a week on a regular basis, plus they're gorgeous.
K-@ Mail Pro - Had an itch to try out a different mail app from MailDroid and found this one. The free version is great, even if it adds a signature advertising it, so I decided to drop $5 on it. Like K-9 but with a much more pleasing aesthetic.
OutThereOmegaEdition - A brutally fun and interesting story wrapped around a downright unforgiving resource management space adventure.
Palabre - This has been the very best, for me, when it comes to RSS readers. Beautifully designed and versatile with its options.
Rewire - HabitRPG never really got me into using it. This app has everything I've needed to get on track to better habits.
Talon - With the dev for Falcon Pro having been hired to work on Twitter's official app, I've been searching for a replacement. This more than fits the bill and makes me wish I'd have bought it sooner.
List made using List My Apps
Nah, android lets you use third party messaging apps no matter what phone the other person has... Here's a couple:
AwSMS (kinda buggy, still in beta)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms
It's only in beta but is very customisable has the requirements you asked for!
AwSMS: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms
Super customizable and with really good quick reply. And it's free as well go give it a shot, it's the one I'm using now
AwSMS also has heads-up btw. And very customizable.

No, I mean more like what the first picture shows on the app page.
Maybe I'm not. I'm using the one on the play Store. I'll include link. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms
AWSMS does this. Best pull down quick reply IMO.
Here are mine:
App | Description |
---|---|
AwSMS | As others have said, the best texting app right now (IMO), customizable and very nice lookin'. |
Authy | Two-factor authentication for various work and personal accounts. Thinking of switching to Authenticator Plus. |
Chrome Beta | For general internetting. |
Gmail | For work gapps email, since they don't want to turn on Inbox support. |
Hangouts | For work chat. |
Inbox | For my personal email. |
Keep | For random notes of stuff I want to remember, and grocery lists and shit like that. |
LastPass | Most people should already know what this is. Manage my passwords between PC/Chromebook/phone. |
Play Music | I have all of my music uploaded to GPM to listen to while at work and/or out and about, and to stream to my Chromecast Audio at home. |
Plex | I use Plex to stream shows or movies to my Chromecast from my media server while having dinner in the evening. |
QuickPic (pre-CM) | I use the last pre-Cheetah Mobile app release that someone on xda re-signed so it wouldn't auto update itself from the Play Store, since IMO it's still the best gallery app. |
Relay Pro | For redditing. |
Slack | More work chat. |
Sleep as Android | To track how bad I slept last night. |
Sunrise Calendar | I use it to sync/access my Google Calendar, since I like it better than the actual Google Calendar app. I might switch to something else if Microsoft screws with it. |
SwiftKey | It might not be the best keyboard ― I just like gesture typing because I'm lazy, the main feature however is being able to type in more than one language at a time without having to hit a language key or switch keyboards. |
Waze | Used to try and avoid traffic on my commute to/from work. |
Weather Timeline | It's nice to know what the weather's like outside before venturing out. |
Wikipedia Beta | For fact checking people's "facts" (ok maybe not used daily, that would make me sound like a jerk). |
To talk to friends who don't like SMS. | |
YouTube | Should be self explanatory... For watching YouTube videos. |
If you are looking for a new SMS app AwSMS is really good. Resending is easy too. Just have to retap on the message to send again.
AwSMS. It's in beta and I think it's the best SMS app. Quick reply is by far best compare to any SMS apps.
