NetGuard - A full-featured firewall app. It's also available on Google Play, but the GitHub version includes ad blocking functionality.
Lightning Browser fits what you're looking for pretty well.
I'd also like to give a shout out to Naked Browser for being the lightest and fastest browser I've used, although it is not the prettiest.
Every time when someone around me is buying a new phone they are always mentioning screen size, storage, ram, they usually know cpu got X cores and then there is me with "what about bootloader and custom rom support?". What i do get most of the time is "Uhhh... duh, it got android X but i do not care about the rest, i just need phone to work".
I mean they are not wrong it's gonna work but HOW is it going to work few months or years down the road, especially if we are talking about low end/mid range device (or 7 years old flagship in your case). It is not all about specs, good software means a lot.
Also try Naked Browser, it does not block ads but it should help with performance
I still prefer naked browser: no bloat, fast, light and with text reflow Linkme: Naked Browser
EDIT
There is free version, but sometimes it's not visible in some markets, link
But that's not really better than using Google? It's still a closed-source app from the same company.
I'd recommend Naked Browser. It's pretty simple, but it does things well.
I use Naked Browser pro. Takes some time to get used to, but definitely the fastest browser I've found. It's a stripped down version of Chrome. Try out the free version, no ads

I don't think memory footprint can get much smaller than Naked Browser without compromising modern website rendering. UI is a bit of an acquired taste though.

http://nakedbrowser.com/android/ (if not available in your country because the dev has interesting views)
My go to browser is always Naked Browser. The dev is awesome and always answers emails.
You can download a block list to block most ads. Instructions here.

does this link not work?
or you can try this
http://nakedbrowser.com/android/nakedbrowser.apk
you could also pay for it and then trial run it for a bit. google gives a window after you pay for an app to refund
There is also Naked Browser, it can be setup to use whichever search engine you want, it is lightweight, claims to be privacy friendly and has an awesome app icon. Seems like some people don't like its UI, but UI is the best part of this browser in my opnion, it is simple and doesn't get in a way, you are left with just a fullscreen web page.

For Android: Naked Browser with their hosts blacklist. NB doesn't have any telemetry bullshit.

Host file is here http://nakedbrowser.com/block/
Check out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
It is really slim and should work better if your device is slow.
If you do stick with firefox, get the ublock origin addon it will make things load faster and have it take up less ram when loading pages.
I'm a fan of Naked Browser.
“naked browser” doesn’t ask for your identity. It’s one of the fastest browsers available and the pro version with all its gestures is well worth the money. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
This qr scanner asks for one permission: your camera. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.secuso.privacyFriendlyCodeScanner
This calendar widget looks ugly to begin with and can be customized to look very minimalistic. It doesn’t ask for your identity. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.byteartist.widget.pro
A media player that doesn’t ask for your phone’s identity. It has internet permission though. Plays basically every file type there is. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc
The pro version of this clipboard doesn’t ask for your identity and it doesn’t use the internet as long as you don’t add the sync plug in. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fi.rojekti.clipper
An offline password manager that doubles as a (bad) offline keyboard. Available also for PC. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2android.keepass2android_nonet
A weather widget that doesn’t need your identity. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.veierland.aix
I also found some... interesting suggestions.
Naked Browser uses minimal resources but you might not like the visible results.
Silly bot, the free version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
And if "incompatible" (country blocked, ask the dev why): http://nakedbrowser.com/android/
No FOSS love? Odd. No ads, open source and actively supported (most of the time).
Naked Browser; hands down, my absolute favorite android app. No ads, no tracking, 100% privacy, light weight, minimal interface and actively being developed. The dev is a really cool guy, too! Consider buying the pro version if you want to support him.
K9 Mail; Mail client. I'm not sure what else to say.
Lampshade; TV TROPES! Attractive UI (plus night mode), 3MB footprint, and it allows you to open tabs. It's like the desktop experience except not.
Notepad; I love jotting down random bullshit that comes to my mind. It's weird that stock Android doesn't come with something like iOS' Notes. This app is only 160KB and allows you to export and import notes on your SD card.
Apollo; IMO, the best alternative to the stock music app. Like everything else on this list, it just works.
Sparse rss; Simple, super lightweight, and it works perfectly. A feed aggregator, plain and simple.
RedReader Beta; I really like this client. Lightweight, and it does everything I need a Reddit client to do, no bloat. The UI is pretty neato as well.
If there's enough interest, I'll add onto this list.
Linkme pulled up the wrong app - use this instead:

I guess Naked Browser is what you are looking for.
Here you go:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
You can also grab an APK from their website:
Naked Browser Pro (theres a free version), really light and fast. I get obsessive about minimalistic apps.
Are you still taking requests? Could you try NakedBrowser? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
There's also a paid version if you wish to support the dev.
Naked Browser, UI might be a bit acquired taste but it has some unique features. Probably doesn't get much more lightweight without compromising rendering engine. http://nakedbrowser.com/android/ (if "not available" in Play, ask the dev why...)
If your phone has Snapdragon processor, you might try CAF Chromium... it is still Chrome, but built from the open source code and Snapdragon-optimized. As a big bonus has buillt-in adblocker.
Lightning Browser
Naked Browser is really lightweight (modern rendering engine) browser. UI is poweruser-minded but may be a bit of an acquired taste.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
http://nakedbrowser.com/android/ (if "not available" on Play, ask the dev why...)
Adblocking: http://nakedbrowser.com/block/ (use this list: https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt
)
Naked Browser
Pros: tiny, lightweight, text reflow, some unique poweruser-minded features.
Cons: UI is bit of an acquired taste.
Download: Play free / Play paid or if blocked in your country because the dev does not like the ratings: http://nakedbrowser.com/android/
Just type naked browser in search. It should find 2 versions. Free one, and PRO one which is few €. Here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fevdev.nakedbrowser
Try Naked Browser Very bad UI but for browsing purposes, i find it very useful.
Naked Browser , on my Redmi-1s, SD400, ,1GB ram.
It is the most resource friendly of the bunch and is as fast any any other browser.
The UI is bare, but that does not mean it lacks functionality. NB has a lot of nifty features, and is probably more feature packed than most popular browsers.
Very stable as well
A 5/5 RECOMMENDATION.
