Yeah, due to Telegram's open API you are not forced to use the official app.
Also, here's a direct link to the Telegram client anuragvivek93 mentioned.
Plus Messenger - Telegram is my online messaging platform of choice but I use Plus Messenger since it has a theming engine. I get updates slightly later but I love me a dark theme. Check it out if you use Telegram!
If you're on Android, you can try Plus Messenger, that has tabs for chats/groups/bots/channels and even favourite contacts!
However, please note, that Plus Messenger heavily relies on official Telegram for Android source code, so the latest update's features are still missing.
The app got an update that added features, removed one feature at the request of the Telegram dev team and put a disclaimer in caps
Changelog: >- Smart Notification for group chat (Thanks to PioneerAxon) - Added French, Russian, Turkish, Catalan and Galician languages (More to come) - Navigation drawer can now be themed. - More theming options for Main and Chat screens. - REMOVED Feature to hide screenshot notification as Telegram requested.

There's an unofficial android app that has those exact organization options. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
I don't know about other platforms, but if I'm not mistaken, all software is open source, so there's also the option to make your own.
If you are using Android. You can install a 3rd party Telegram client like this "Plus Messenger" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
You'll be running two separate telegram apps in your phone.
I'm not going to vouch for its security, since it's debated by a lot of people, but Telegram has the advantage of being completely open source, which is something else it can lord over WhatsApp on top of its other features. Plus Messenger adds the ability to theme it to your liking, too.
It also has a web client, and a fully-featured desktop client for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Like you stated, the only bad thing to really say about it is getting people to switch.
No telegram has option to send image without compression, You can also send images as files to skip compression.
Yes there is no option for chat level setting to save media to gallery.
I am using Plus Messenger for telegram https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
It's down to personal preference. I use plus messenger because you can customise it. But I would go with "x" over the standard.

There is such a function in the 3rd-party client for Android, Plus Messenger.
Works for groups and supergroups, and has options to either show all text or all media messages from a particular user.
Maybe you can try Plus Messenger (former "Telegram Plus"), based on Telegram but with a lot of extra options.
I have never tried it but it may have that option.
Because Telegram uses an open API, anyone can theoretically develop a custom client that still uses (and talks to) the existing Telegram userbase, like this one.
But I doubt they can do this because it's cloud based, so you'd still be marking things as "read" when you access the conversation from your PC client I guess.
Plus Messenger allows for theming

Join the group here and some helpful soul will link you the dark theme ;)
i don’t really know the specifics, tbh, i used "whatsapp+" by rafalense (developer) for months and then switched to "his" client instead of the original one without thinking about it too much, when i switched to telegram. at least it’s configurable as hell, and it can be themed.
Check out Plus Messenger if you are on Android. There are a ton of premade themes and you can also set your own colors. I used to use it all the time, but went back to original Telegram when Google added Telegram support to "OK Google"
True, but there are also unofficial Telegram clients, like Plus Messenger (you can find it in the play store) which allow you to create categories for your chats and pin more than 5 chats on top
You definitely can do that on Plus Messenger -- it is an unofficial Telegram client. It is said to be one of the best clients according to the CEO Pavel Durov tho.
Oh I forgot they changed the name. It's Plus Messenger. Telegram X is also nice (and official), but it doesn't have as much customization. Plus is unofficial but it's open source and as safe as the official telegram (afaik) because it uses the official Telegram API.
The Plus Messenger for Telegram have an AMOLED theme, I am using and is very good. The name I amnot remember but is in the "dark" tag. Plus: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus App to use themes in plus: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.rafalense.themes
That's probably a bug. Usernames sometimes not shown when entering "@", so sometimes it's possible to mention inline.
And probably third-party clients (like Plus Messenger) allow you to do this.
Plus Messenger, an unofficial telegram client, allows you to use different bubbles and many, many other visual tweaks.
This is my setup on a Nexus 5.
Yeah, to tag-along I agree that Telegram is the go-to. If you're interested as well, there are a couple really great forks. All the same from what I have seen, just don't submit bugs to original Telegram dev.
As an example: Plus Messenger. It allows for more user customization to your chat page (all edits are clientside), and a few other options I can't remember right now.
Yes, Telegram+ was renamed because Telegram didn't like them using the "official" name but they allowed the use of the Telegram API for a separate app.

I only use WhatsApp to keep in touch with family. I prefer using Telegram+ and Hangouts for my buddies with Android devices.
If you're using the official app, there's an unofficial app for telegram with even more features, like theme's and more. Check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
Plus messenger is a themeable fork of the official app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
There's an accompanying themes app by the same author, but I would be very weary, as it asks for waaay to many permissions for what it's supposed to do.
While we're at it, you can also try cf lumen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.lumen and Lux https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitocassisi.luxlite for some extra dimming. With the right kernel / driver, they can actually use only the red channel for colors (instead of a red overlay that also makes the black color turn red)

This is the one I use on Android. I know it's fairly popular and works well.
Here are some alternative Telegram clients you can try to see if the problem follows you through apps:
Deberías probar Plus Messenger, un mod de Telegram hecho por rafalense. Link
Plus Messenger (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus) shows the user ID on a user's profile page (the one with the username, bio, etc)
it's a android telegram client: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
Plus Messenger separates between private chats, groups, channels and more.

Go here and try it (you can see screenshots too)
It has many tabs
It's good shit
Hi!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus&hl=en Has a favorites tab, to keep track of your most import sticker groups!
In the meanwhile, you can always try Plus Messenger. It has tabs, among other features.
With plus messenger (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus)
You can see the id of a private channel:
Plus have these features and more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
There's other options like Forkgram, Plus messenger and Nekogram X but I think Telegram X has the best UI.
Plus is even better yet. Check it out. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
Try Plus messenger. Also adds a lot of extra features the regular telegram apps are missing.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus&hl=en_US
Most customizable https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
I use Plus Messenger. It works without problems:

Try this.. Plus messenger
It's not official, but it works well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
No me le termina tutte senza problemi. Uso Plus però, un client alternativo. Non so se possa dipendere da questo.
If you are on Android, try unofficial client Plus Messenger, it supports separate tabs for dialogues, groups, channels etc.
Plus messenger for Android can shoud you messages from specific user in specific chat.
So, Plus Messenger (available on PlayStore) is illegal? I can't see the source >https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.telegram.plus
Telegram+ FTW!
Why not just use plus messenger? It has themes, easy ways to config and is fast.
Edit: not sure why this is getting downvoted. Plus is a client for Telegram.
