Is it a total of 10, or 10 plus you? There's a MMS limit of 10 people in a thread, so you guys might be beyond that limit. I would suggest using a group chat app. My personal favorite is GroupMe since it's a cross-platform (iOS and Android) group messaging app with a few extra perks like making your own nickname for that particular group.
I have an ongoing SMS thread between my wife and I(both on Android) and a couple of friends(on iPhones). We all have this installed and have it set up with a group chat. Works perfectly. You can tell the app to send the SMS through your preferred messager app as well. So it goes to my Hangouts instead of GroupMe.
After reading through the updates, I highly recommend using groupme. It has a webapp for when your on the PC and also has ios and android apps. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groupme.android
It's great for things like this, I've used it before for clan sort of stuff and it's great tool, it even has calendar events for the group and they all get notified.
You can make 5 groups.
MOD chat
PC, Xbox, Ps4 chats
Tournament chat (for any issues during the tournament only) .
It goes s off username/email address so no numbers involved. (you can also set display name to say your Gamertag and reddit username)
Also seems maybe a few more mods wouldn't go a miss.
I wasn't part of this tournament so I couldn't give any feedback on the tournament itself.
When I was a medical assistant, our doctor's office used GroupMe, an app similar to what you're describing. You can have multiple lists you are a part of, can communicate easily with each list, and can add/remove people as needed. It works over data, but if I remember right, people's numbers can be saved in their profile (so they can be easily texted if they aren't responding). It works over data, but I highly recommend it. It is iOS/Android compatible.

Maybe GroupMe?
Register with your phone number, Google or Facebook etc.
I've heard that GroupMe is quite popular with clubs and has some nice features to help with scheduling and whatnot.
Telegram also has nice features and is immensely popular. It also allows for sharing very large files if that's something you're interested in.
If you're looking for something that's more likely to protect your privacy give Wire a shot.
These all have apps on iTunes and web browser access.
Have you tried GroupMe? It works pretty well

Sounds like you'd do better using a broadcast phone app like Groupme. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.groupme.android
GroupMe may work. I'm in a few groups, and haven't had any issues.
Found this app called groupme!
Here's the group chat I created
You're invited to my new group 'Lorinpalooza' on GroupMe. https://app.groupme.com/join_group/15248071/A300Ow

There are other apps that you can use for group chatting which also work on both iOS and Android, such as GroupMe.
