Huge props for the Material Design, I thought it would never happen.
The regular PlayStation app is cluttered and runs pretty bad so it's great to see them doing something about it.
It'd make it perfect if they added VOIP in there and even make a desktop application then I could finally ditch Hangouts/Skype.

There's a few different PS apps. (I wish they'd just merge them all into one. ��) - But, the one linked below lets you chat 1-on-1 with someone, or to a group using PS messages.

I think the method I described in the OP is slightly better though, as it means other players don't need to change screens to read your message, and you don't need to set up a new group or 1-on-1 chat in the first place.

You can try....
- Download the PSN Messages App for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.playstation.mobilemessenger)
- Save the image and send it to any random friend from the PS4
- Open the Messages app on the phone, open the message you just sent from the PS4, long press the image to Save it
- Upload to imgur (or whatever)
