I use Tasker for automation, but I use the Youmail app for call filtering. It has a setting that will only let calls from your contacts through, like you mentioned, but it will also transcribe any voicemail that someone who was blocked leaves. I then get that transcript on my watch. That way I don't have the phone ring, but I can see with a glance whether it's someone that I need to call back or not.
Use YouMail https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm
I use it to block spam calls. You can set it to give the blocked calls the "This number is disconnected" message. That helps get you off of the spam lists. I use the free version. They offer paid options but the free one works good.
I'm back on iPhone after being on Android for almost 10 years and I agree that the visual voicemail situation is abysmal on android compared to Apple. If you’re willing to try a third party app then I found that the YouMail app in the play store actually works really well as far as transcribing voicemails. There is a free tier, and you can try it out and see what you think. You don’t have to start paying unless you get a lot of voicemails every month.

Pretty sure he is wrong, or a little confused about terminology.
When I got my N5X, I wouldn't get any v-mail at all, just a weird text. I called VZW, had them shut off visual v-mail and provision basic v-mail, and now I have functioning old-school basic v-mail (i.e., you get a little symbol in the notification bar, you call v-mail, you listen, etc.). I think that is what he is talking about.
I have read posts that say this app works on VZW but I haven't tried it.
I like YouMail. I mainly like the feature that sends any caller not in my contacts to voicemail without ringing. Then I get a transcript of the voicemail on my watch, so I can see whether it's important or just a spam call.
I use YouMail for this, limited transcription for the free version but I hardly get voicemail these days so I never run out of transcription
YouMail app. Just forward your phone through the app and you can get spam blocking with custom settings, visual voice mail with speech to text, custom voicemails, archiving voicemails and a bunch of other features.
With Android phones, we can support the built in VVM app in some in but there's some that are just not going to work with it. The solution that you may want to look into is using a third party VVM app. We have a blog post talking about some of the alternatives including YouMail which I'm a fan of.
YES, try YouMail. Totally free. It's also helped me get rid of robocalls & weed out telemarketers. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&referrer=utm_source%3Dko_2c28586ea969e80a0%26utm_medium%3D%26utm_campaign%3Dkoyoumail-visual-voicemail-for-android53bb05a32aefaaf29be062ec87%26utm_term%3D%26utm_content%3D%26
I use YouMail. It has spam setting that catch most spam, so your phone doesn't even ring. I just block every call that's not in my contacts. The voicemails are transcribed. That way, I can just look at my watch when a voicemail comes in and see if it's someone I need to call back or not.
If you want an option that is carrier agnostic, try things like Yet Another Call Blocker (from fdroid: https://f-droid.org/packages/dummydomain.yetanothercallblocker/ - FOSS) or YouMail (primarily a vm service, but offers call blocking, from gPlay https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm - freemium)
I use YACB as YM wants tons of permissions and if you wander even a millimeter from the square box it has for the 'free' service, it hits you up for like $9 a month.
Mint Visual Voicemail will not give transcriptions on many phones. I would recommend YouMail Voicemail Call Blocker which works great with Mint and provides transcription.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&hl=en_US&gl=US
It's not a FOSS app, but I like YouMail for that. It will send all calls not in contacts to voicemail without ringing. Then the voicemail will be transcribed and sent to my watch. That way I can look at the voicemail and see if it was someone important that I need to call back, or if it was just a sales call.
Well, I'm not sure what the correct answer to your question is, however I also receive a lot of calls, and also carry a personal and a work phone. So I browsed around and tested some apps, ended up purchasing a subscription to Youmail visual voice mail premium, they also have a free version. It syncs between my 2 devices so I can listen to a voicemail on any phone or the web. Had it for years and have voice-mails saved from when my kids called me when they were young and cute lol, Check it out
The success of using the VVM network branded app will depend on the phone's firmware with the new X3. It can be hit or miss with it right now.
If you notice it's not working you may want to try a third-party app like YouMail which will skip over any of the issues the branded app might have. Available for Android or iOS
I've been happy using Youmail app on my droid. It has 4 levels of call blocking, voicemail, and more. I can assign different voicemail greetings to groups r individuals, I have blocked calls going to a number disconnected announcement. I have mine pretty strict, only my contacts can ring through.
What kind of phone is it? I was getting a similar number of calls, so I set up YouMail for Android and set it to only ring for contacts.
YouMail - no more spam calls, get your voicemail by email when you forgot your phone.. free
What? Don't look at me that way! We can post on Reddit too, right?
Have you tried YouMail? I don't use it myself (no need), but I hear from people I trust that it's the app for blocking calls.
Good option. Loads of features, advanced call handling (on forwarded calls) like VoIP.ms. Voicemail messages would be stored on YouMail servers, accessible from any device.
• To use YouMail, you must forward missed calls to YouMail with carrier-specific forwarding codes.
• If YouMail doesn’t fit your needs, deactivate forwarding BEFORE you delete the app, otherwise your voicemail will NOT be re-routed back to your carrier.
• ...YouMail runs GPS in the background to enable you to see your location at the time you missed a call. This feature is not enabled unless you grant permission.
- YouMail on Google Play
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned, but YouMail for Android is great for blocking robo calls. It has auto updated spam lists and you can set your own list of blocked numbers. All blocked callers receive a "number out of service" recording and they can't leave a voicemail.
On a side note, these scammers are ruthless when it comes to retrying from spoofed numbers! I get a lot of student loan and insurance scam calls.
There's a few out there
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&hl=en_US
Method is slightly different on this one, replaces your voicemail with a disconnected message, so you just deny a suspicious call and they get the message, which removes you from their list.

I use YouMail, which is great because a British chick tells all my friends that I'm busy having a shag and to try again later. My friends had a serious WTF moment the first time they heard it.
try Youmail and the verizon voicemail limitations become a non-issue https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&referrer=utm_source%3Dko_807757f7de1ca4dda%26utm_medium%3D%26utm_campaign%3Dkoyoumail-visual-voicemail-for-android53bb05a32aefaaf29be062ec87%26utm_term%3D%26utm_content%3D%26
i have used Youmail for years because it has better features/ capacity than verizon https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&referrer=utm_source%3Dko_807757f7de1ca4dda%26utm_medium%3D%26utm_campaign%3Dkoyoumail-visual-voicemail-for-android53bb05a32aefaaf29be062ec87%26utm_term%3D%26utm_content%3D%26
Im not here to shill for them or anything, but Ive been using an app called Youmail for my voicemail.
Its been very good, quick, efficient and most importantly, free. My only complaint is that I havent seen a way to archive voice mails yet, and I have lost some very important ones.
I like that I can have select callers get specific voice mail recordings, spam can go to a disconnected number recording, and others to my own recording. My friends are quite impressed with my pretentious English Lady answering service. Also, its a very intuitive app, it crowd sources spam, finds location via area code. I highly recommend it. Again, I am just impressed with them and have been using them for about 6 years now.
YouMail. AFAIK, it's only on android. It also lets you add specific greetings for certain people.
I use YouMail and it works great, they have a free app but I paid for Better YouMail and I recommend it since it doesn't have ads and it can integrate with the voicemail tab in the native dialer.
YouMail works great for me.
Check out Youmail.

A rep told me to use YouMail
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm&hl=en_US
Take a look at YouMail.
Only thing I can think of is Youmail. You can have it play a disconnected phone sound to callers.
YouMail should help you out. I'm not sure about blocking SMS though.
YouMail might be what you're looking for?
Nope... but good try. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm
drunk bot.... here is the linkl
I use YouMail. It's very customizable.
Hey u/lawlcat12 I'm on rogers and far as I know they don't have the option of Call Control like Telus subscribers get. I did install the free version of youmailyoumail and am quite pleased. I like how it can automatically block phone numbers that are not in my contact list that have the same prefix as me. Phenomenal customer support, visual voicemail for Android, 20 voicemail to text transcriptions, voicemail to email with option to CC separate emails and conference calling. My premium trial just ended and this what the ad supported looks like in the app : if you scroll down you can see the ad http://imgur.com/gallery/VGvq87r I had to call rogers to remove their voicemail from my plan to get the conditional call forwarding working. If interested, here's my referral link, it gets us both credits towards premium https://invite.youmail.com/XScndXIp0jb
YouMail does this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm
I mainly use Youmail for visual voicemail, but it also does call blocking. I believe is has the "doo-doo-doo, the number is out of service" message as the default for blocked callers, but if not you can always set it up that way.
I use YouMail.

TracFone Android Devices have either a preinstalled Visual Voicemail app or it appears via the dialer app. TracFone iPhone's, most of the time have the Visual Voicemail via the dialer app, I don't think they have a separate iOS app. If you bought the device unlocked or via Carrier, than the device won't have the default TracFone Visual Voicemail, even in the dialer.
Here's a few replacement Visual Voicemail apps:

I've used Youmail for years, must more flexible than Google Voice. App is here
Try this app if you can't find anything. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.youmail.android.vvm
Visual voicemail has been retired from Verizon. Just download youmail. Link me: youmail

You can use YouMail, it's free. And use the YouMail App for voicemail.
I've been using the YouMail app since the s4 and it seems to work well with my s6.
don't you have to pay for the verizon visual voicemail? I've been use youmail for as long as I can remember
I use YouMail and it works great!
Yep. T-Mobile voicemail notifications are unreliable and they have been for years.
I suggest that you look into third party voicemail services/apps.
I switched to YouMail and it works much more reliably than the T-Mobile voicemail.

I too hated checking my voicemail. That was before I installed YouMail Visual Voicemail. Simple to set up, and you don't have to dial into your voicemail just to check it.
