>This is a significant change in the RCS rollout strategy – Google is going around all the red-tape and slow-moving carrier barriers and taking the RCS rollout to a new level. As Google starts to roll out this opt-in version of RCS to more countries, RCS should eventually reach many more people. - <em>GSMArena</em> Jun 18
I absolutely adore the fact that it has a choking hazard warning, despite the fact that it has no stylus and the back isn't even removable.
According to GSMArena this phone doesn't have the right bands to work on freedom, unfortunately.
Here's a quick map I drew of my coverage experience.
Green is good, yellow and orange are spotty, darker is worse. I only shaded in areas where I can say with confidence how good the reception is. You can use this along with the real data-based coverage maps from OpenSignal to determine how good the signal is likely to be in your area (select WIND Mobile to view the Freedom Mobile coverage map).
If your willing to build your own you will need
1x Quectel EM06-A
1x WE826
Will cost under $150
But if you want a prebuilt you can get this from amazon it’s using the same parts as the build above

Latest update of the "Freedom Mobile My Account" app on Google play was updated as recent as June 22, 2018. Not sure how this app is finished. However, if you look at the reviews, the latest update for the app is not working very well for many people.
If you bought your S8 from Freedom, it should be compatible (the phone won't be an international version). You don't need the CIBC to download the app (but you do need it to use it). This question is probably better directed to Samsung for troubleshooting, see contact info here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.spay&hl=en
Ok I'm going to send this speed test result because I'm not trying to get 4k netflix on a tiny phone and I'm not unreasonable when I say my phone speed is slow...
It all depends on where you live. Some places have great coverage, and some have barely any at all. Use OpenSignal to figure out what your experience might be like.
And yes, you can disable data roaming either on your phone itself or through your My Account.
As already mentioned, it's only available if you previously installed it.
The app is no longer necessary. Alternative methods of logging in are available; the SIM option being likely the best. If you're just looking for a map of Wifi locations, download the Shaw app.
VoLTE is indicated by staying on LTE during a call.
CellMapper shows the Band number,
Network Cell Info too, more visibly.
On the G6, *#546368#*873#
Field Test / Modem Settings / Engineering Mode
Press Previous for LTE info, including Band, bandwidth, RSRP (dBm signal strength), RSRQ (quality).
Save the Field Test dial code to your contacts, enter *#5
on the dialpad to bring it up.
(a speed dial or contact shortcut would send a MWI code to the network, not what you want)
Anyone getting a new SIM should verify if their ICCID starts with 891490 or 891491, or if their IMSI starts with 302490 or 302491 with an app like SIM Card Info.
Actually, according to SamMobile, this update DOES have the patch, but not the September 2017 Android Security Patch.
Someone who has not installed it yet, should run the BlueBorne Scanner to verify its vulnerable & then again after updating, to see that it is no longer an exploit.
If you do a lookup of the Speed Test ID with Ookla, it shows that the connection was with Rogers.
https://www.speedtest.net/result/9903365905
Also the IP address is registered with Shaw Communications, and not Freedom Mobile. Freedom's IP addresses will show up in the registry as Freedom Mobile or Globalive, for older IPs.
OP is lying to everyone, and edited the image.
Okay, many questions:
First, This device?
Second, did you previously have a Freedom Mobile WiFi Calling compliant device & WiFi Calling activated?
Guess being stock Android Pie may be a key factor here, so would you mind posting the build.prop if possible (use AIDA64 to get it, it's under System Files & remove anything specific to your actual device if present like serial number or IMEI)?
Under Settings > Network & Settings > Mobile Network, is there an entry for Settings Version
? If so, what's listed there?
[Trying to gauge if this device is simply masquerading itself as a Pixel^(3/3XL/3a) somehow.]
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.blokada.alarm.dnschanger this works too. it has selection of dns addres to choose from including cloudflare and google ones. its open source, no ads and free.
It's called Network Cell Info Lite. And yeah, perhaps you're right. Roaming registering as Freedom. If you look at the map, there are dots all over the east coast/Canada so you might be right..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite
Usually that's what happens when one ports in a number from another carrier.
It can be fixed with a rooted Android device & Xposed Framework, using an app called "Phone Number Fix".
Alright. Was going to suggest CSC, but you already have done that.
You could use an app like Phono (they have not updated the logo yet, so it will show the old WIND logo).
The app needs an update to fix this misidentification, since it has not been updated since May 2017.
That phone is a powerhouse... Battery for days. Haha with that said, check gsmarena for compatibility and compare with your current phone. Both phones match, you are golden.
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9527&idPhone2=7247
I'm pretty sure Chatr migrated to match Rogers' frequencies, which would be 850/1900 - this is supported by the Chinese variant, IIRC.
https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_a2_(mi_6x)-9140.php
I just say this because I had to be careful to get my mother the global 4A and not the Malay version, as only the 4A (Global) worked with Koodo.
Get me the model number, and I'll try and do some confirmation work for you. Alternatively, you can probably validate using GSMArena.com. As trusted a source as I've ever found. Up to you, I've got nothing better to do.
>My apologies, I got the model wrong in my original post; it's the XT1900-1. GSMArena states it's compatible with B4, B7, B13 and B66. Will I experience any issues using 3G or LTE on Freedom with this phone? Wifi calling as a feature isn't important to me.
>
>I'm drawn to the Moto X4 because of the value at its price point, as well as it being an Android One device.

personage

I noticed that Freedom has WiFi calling. My iPhone supports it but will Freedom?
Not at this time, it is closed to Devices sold by Freedom only. That may change in the future.
I see that Freedom is about to complete an update to all LTE.
That is with the AWS-3 (Band 66) spectrum. The recently acquired BRS & MBS (Band 7 & 13) spectrum has yet to be deployed.
How has reception improved over the last couple of years?
It is much better on LTE & generally continues to improve. Check Tower Locator or OpenSignal to see if it will suit your needs.
I don’t see an add on for Name Display. Does Freedom not have it or is it just a default feature?
No, Name Display is not offered.
Any other iPhone limitations that I should be aware of?
The current iPhones work on LTE only in the Eastern Ontario region on Freedom, as that area uses AWS-1 (Band 4) LTE. All iPhones after iPhone 5 will work on Freedom Mobile's AWS-1 (Band 4) 3G UMTS/HSPA network.
The next iPhone & future iDevices would need to support AWS-3, Apple would need to certify the Freedom Mobile's LTE network to officially support features like Visual Voicemail, FaceTime over Cellular & Personal Hotspot.
The signal's propagation has a lot of variables.
If the condo were you live is surrounded by many more condos, due to the building materials required, signal would rarely make it in.
If towers are located quite far from the building, that will be a factor for having signal.
Use Tower Locator or OpenSignal to see how the coverage is, in your area.
Are you talking about AdGuard Pro for iOS? If so, then it'll be "discontinued due to Apple's policy": https://adguard.com/en/blog/adguard-pro-discontinued/
Seems low even for ottawa. Have you tried out in Kanata? Seen some good speeds there. The speeds in, waterloo make your test look slow.

Try changing 'Network operators' from automatic to manual selection of a Nationwide roaming 'partner' - the list once it's generated won't display who's who, just the RAT (LTE and WCDMA) for each. You can confirm which provider with Network Cell Info once you're registered on a site.
Both Bell and Rogers serve the Blue Mountains area, Bell has more towers. You may have to experiment with each provider and RAT; WCDMA may give the most reliable inbound connection. Let us know how you make out.
Be sure to switch back to automatic selection when you head home.
RBT could make interop smoother and more reliable (eg. seamless handoffs), but... RBT. They won't do anymore than the minimum required where Freedom's concerned.
I'm on Android but use an app called Call Blocker. You need to enter the numbers / prefixes to block but after a week or so, most went to it and now I get hardly any getting through
Edit: it's Call Blocker by Vlad Lee
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vladlee.callblocker
RCS would work as long as one switches (defaults) the messaging application to Android Messages & once that app prompts to enable Chat Features.
If you have it enabled on another device already, it should be instantly enabled, once Android Messages is installed.
I highly doubt it would work but you can follow these steps if you want to give it a try:
Blokada and 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare) can help resolve the issues, since running local DNS on a phone would not be advisable.
Grab Network Cell Info Lite and it will give you the carrier info on the Raw tab. For example, if it says the operator is 720 then you are on Rogers. If it says 220 then you are on Telus. These aren't the only operator numbers for these carriers. For a more complete list checkout Wikipedia.
A simple option if you're using Android is download an app called Phono. It's great because whenever you're on Freedom's home network, you'll see Freedom's logo and then when you're on an away network, you'll see the logo of the away network partner that you're roaming on (example: if the away network partner that you happen to be connected to at the moment is Rogers, you'll see the Rogers logo). I have the app on my Galaxy S7 and it's great. It takes the guess work out of finding out which away network I'm on if I'm in an away zone.
What's LTR? Where are you located?
Use an app like Network Cell Info Lite to see if the device is indeed connecting to the closest tower properly.
The application used above, is Network Signal Guru.
It requires ROOT access for Qualcomm SnapDragon SoCs, so most will not be able to utilize it.
This might not work in all scenarios, but I use Call Blocker for android, where I then have the policy to block everything except what is in my phonebook (or other specifically whitelisted numbers).
It could be due to the sim card not having your phone number programmed into it. Try downloading this app, and see if your phone number is displayed. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.harrygonzalez.simcardinfo
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidyou.wifiloginnew
This app does the logging in for your automatically. You'll have to connect to the wifi the first time you visit so that it is added to your phone's list of wifis to which it should auto-connect, but it will then handle the rest for you. You'll then auto-connect and auto-log into that SSID whenever you visit any of the place's locations.
Like /u/brndnarneson I always had trouble with Walmart wifi and thought it was their issue. Since getting this app, which I thought would help me with other places (and it does), I've found that the issue seemed to be with the login process as this app connects me flawlessly each time.
^(Unknown is usually only an issue for those who ported a number over to WIND/Freedom Mobile.)
That is part of the tradeoff of UMTS idle, unfortunately; the delay in reconnection.
Have no idea if this app works, but one could try it: HSPA+ Tweaker
I did not say every phone.
However, all documentation I can find says you do have the band.
For example:
https://www.frequencycheck.com/models/A1o2o/samsung-sm-g965w-galaxy-s9-td-lte-samsung-star-2?c_id=73605 https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s9+-8967.php
You'd be missing a ton of connectivity. Xiaomi phones are great, but they are not for the Canadian market, even more so Freedom mobile.
Check out GSMArena's phone finder, I pre-filtered it for you with freedom bands

I used this app to force LTE on Android and it worked pretty good. My phone never goes to 3G anymore.

Looking at this one-
it needs unlimited text messages and 50 MB of data
As far as I am aware of, I am not familiar of a way to turn an Android phone into a dumb phone that resembles and landline handest from the 1990's. There are things <strong>Like This</strong> that will try to simplify things as much as possible, but I don't personally know this person using the phone.
Really, I would either keep the phone as a spare for yourself, you possible sell/trade it.
Yes, I've tried that.
Freedom is not listed. Could it have something to do with the fact that I'm using an unlocked international phone?
Here's my phone: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM-A125F-Factory-Unlocked-International/dp/B08T1WZFN7
This one: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM-A125F-Factory-Unlocked-International/dp/B08T1WZFN7
It's an unlocked, international phone.
You're trading amazing battery life, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and Extended Range LTE for mediocre battery life, a better screen and more storage and RAM. It's only an extra gigabyte of RAM but it's double the storage; however, that is slightly offset by expandable storage.
Even if you don't care about VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and Extended Range LTE, you may reconsider when you see just how staggering the difference is in battery life (scroll down to the endurance rating).
If you're keen on the Nokia 9, it will have a $100 discount in the US Mar 3 - 11, so $599USD.

Solved the issue for myself.

I looked up the towers that are located in Victoria and what spectrum they run on.

I figure you need a phone that has the following if you want a full working Freedom Mobile phone.

UMTS:
1700
and
2100

LTE:
Band 4 (1700/2100)
Band 66 (1700/2100)

Here is a link to a list of the 71 phones that will work on Freedom Mobile in both Victoria and Vancouver I believe: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?s3Gs=UMTS1700,UMTS2100&s4Gs=4,66

I hope this helps all the other people that were as frustrated as me coming over from Vancouver and finding they couldn't receive calls on their 3 year old phone.

Freedom's voice calls go through 1700/2100 freqencies (better known as AWS (Band 4) UMTS/HSPA).

Only the D851 (T-Mobile) variant of the G3 can connect to Freedom for voice calls as it supports the 1700/2100 signal. Ironically, the D852 (Canada) version of the G3 has these frequencies missing so it can only connect the the LTE for data only.
The Global version which is available on Amazon.ca (here) only says GSM / HSPA / LTE ( https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_a2_(mi_6x)-9140.php#mi-a2 - under the Mi A2 tab) Wish I could make sense of it (or get hold of an IMEI I could test on the Freedom website).
I just checked Nokia 7.1 and it's really tempting on bhphotovideo.com. Where did you find the information that 7.1 is compatible with Freedom Mobile? GSMArena says that it lacks the 1700 from the 3G and has no information on the LTE other than saying that it has LTE.
Thanks for the valuable info everyone. My initial statement about the lack of band 66 phones was based on searching for phones with the specs I wanted at https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3 . I found loads, then put in the band 66 restriction, and found barely any (and no good options). However this seems to specifically reflect there not being many smaller band 66 phones, and lots of new phablets. So I kinda misspoke.
That's mine (inside my apartment). Will run another when I get to the thrift store (or I'll end up getting slowed down. I'm just about past my high-speed allotment). https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/5783608057
Units are in megabytes, not megabits.
In case you missed this edit:
Also, install this app from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo
It can check refurbishment status on Samsung devices as well as give detailed info.
Also, the fact that the Freedom Mobile CSC installed & your phone number is displayed is a good sign that the device is detecting the SIM card, so as long as it's not blacklisted, hopefully it's just the SIM card itself.
As others have mentioned, there are only very specific variations (model numbers) that work well for Freedom, For example, the Zenfone Max Plus has different model numbers for each region it is sold in. If you buy the wrong model number, you phone will either function poorly with the network, or not at all.

It is a safe bet to stick with the phone models that Freedom offers on their website. You don't necessarily need to buy direct from Freedom. As long as you stick to the models that Freedom has on their site.
Z3 is not available anywhere except through Verizon in the USA.
Z3 play is missing bands 3G AWS, 4G bands 4, 13, and 66. I.e. almost every band that Freedom uses. It won't work at all.
https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_z3_play-9003.php
tl;dr hell no
Just one more question. Considering I won't be able to get the Freedom plans. Would the carriers you mentioned also support the global version of the Nokia 7 plus?

Could you clear something up for me? From my understanding, in western Canada (AB & BC), the Xperia XZ and Xperia X Performance would not get LTE speeds, but would work with everything else on Freedom. Is that correct?

That is currently the best mid/hi range Android One device, however it does indeed check all the boxes regarding spectrum frequency on Freedom Mobile.
Here is the landing page for the Moto X^(4) Android One.
The Moto X^(4) (non-A1 variant) did receive ISED Canada Certification, however no carrier nor Motorola/Lenovo Canada started to sell it.
If you want to save a few bucks on the phone itself and be unlocked you might look at the offerings of the smaller brands.
Newegg.ca's BLU listings, you can search by screen size.
You can get an unlocked phone with comparable guts to Samsung or Apple for 1/2 the price. I've had a BLU Studio 6.0 HD for a few years and I've been mostly pleased with it. It has occasional, infrequent hiccups that are fixed with a reboot but otherwise it does everything I want. I'm thinking about upgrading and from what I've seen in reviews their newer products look better (the back of the 6.0 is ugly) and their build quality has improved. The company is American. No, I don't work for them.
This site can show tiered lists of smartphones by manufacturer to make it easier to figure out what their top models are. If you're having trouble getting exact specs for a certain phone search for it at www.GSMarena.com
Thanks for the reply. So I don't have an exact phone in mind right now, but as an example, it seems that spectrum-wise, this one is better than my current Samsung Note 4 (has all the freedom bands my current phone has, plus a few more as a bonus). Let me know if you feel I'm misunderstanding something, or if it won't work.
https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/CA/xiaomi-mi-note-10 https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/CA/samsung-galaxy-note-4-32bits
Again, I'm giving up on band 66 compatibility, I'm happy with the LTE/Voice speeds I have now with my Note 4. As long as I get a Xiaomi that will have equal or faster data speeds, along with way better phone specs for the buck, I'd be happy.
Why is that? Do they do anything different to their own phones before sale?
For example, I could get a used S10E for $600 or one new off of amazon for $700 which apparently has all 4G bands for freedom. Buying the S10E directly from the freedom store would be hundreds of dollars more.
there may be other places that may have stock:

https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-umidigi-a5-pro

I haven't tried the other locations, but sun-sky notes the device is around $125 CAD with $13 shipping to take a month, but DHL at $29 shipping takes 2-4 business days.
worth a try. the A5 Pro shows it has extended range LTE band 13, and kimovil states it works with all of Freedom's bands.
I managed to see your link, /u/Taj_2002 - the article does say Rogers and Fido having full LTE across the entire Skytrain system because they've gotten coverage in the tunnels, I just thought you meant when you wrote "Telus doesn't even work on sky trains" that you meant completely no service at all along the entire routes. I get a lot of reddit time in while traveling to/from Canuck games so I know it works for most of the way there. I go Expo and Millenium lines, including Evergreen and I'm sure the tunnel in Port Moody doesn't have coverage with Telus (which the article even says just Rogers has coverage in).
I guess I'll have to wait now until the fall to see the other spots where/if it drops out along the way. :(
Surrey Central Mall though - I know for sure it works there as I pick a friend up from there quite often. FWIW here's the OpenSignal map: Surrey Central Mall coverage
Make sure you have the right LTE bands for your area. Right now band 66 is the only one active in most places.
If your phone and plan are compatible (and you're in an area that should have LTE service, check OpenSignal to make sure), then you may need a SIM card swap. Go to any Freedom Mobile Warranty & Repair location (marked with a wrench on this map) to have a free SIM swap done.
Well if it's working fine elsewhere, sounds like a reception issue, especially after phone/SIM was switched. It's worth reporting that to them so they are aware for the future. Check https://opensignal.com/networks/canada/wind-mobile-coverage with the 2 addresses and see what it shows. It's a crowd sources signal strength map.
Mother-in-law lives in Kitchener.
It works really well there.
She's in the Woodside/Bridgeport West area.

>I get that, but it's well known that Canadians pay WAY too much for cell service so none of the carrier's prices should be so high.
I hear this all the time, but can't help but think part of the problem is population density. You can compare to all sorts of other countries that are cheaper, but they tend to be much smaller and have much higher population density.
When Canada is so massive, and our population so small, to have good service means many more cell towers per capita than more dense regions. Which means higher costs per capita, and in turn, higher bills.
And before someone mentions Australia, compare network coverage of Australia to Canada. Canada has far broader network coverage than Australia, which means more towers, more cost.
I agree, it would be a net neutrality thing. I think OP means throttling instead of prioritizing. And some ISP's throttle certain things like Torrents, updates, etc. during certain hours. My isp (Vmedia) throttles Netflix between 7PM and 11PM and it is reflected when you do a speed test on fast.com (aka Netflix servers)
Speedtest.net on the other hand almost never undergoes throttling by most isp and provides a more reliable speed of what your connection is actually capable of.
Doing a quick test using Netflix on my 3G/4G connection (no LTE yet :D), and it's mostly at high quality. Over 3 minutes, it dipped three times (the start, and part way through for ~20 seconds and then maybe again for ~15 seconds) to a lower, grainier quality but then picked back up. (Wynonna Earp, S1E1)
Watching 2 minutes on wifi, and it was again lower at the start, but then was consistently high quality.
Using Netflix's https://fast.com speed test, I am getting 70Mbps average (100Mbps advertised connection). On data, I'm getting an average of 8.8Mbps.
Netflix (https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306) recommends 5Mbps for their high quality streams.
So I don't think Netflix is getting throttled for me on 3g/4g, based on subjective quality (just more hiccups over cellular data, and worse latency) and fast.com.
I am mostly hoping LTE helps address that latency issue (someone mentioned Google Play Music being slow to start, which I encounter); average throughput is fine for me.
https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/3120532520
Usually get around anywhere between 10-20 MBPS in the Download and 4 in the Upload without Carrier Aggregation. But today I have gotten 45.8 on the Download and 15.7 on the Upload with Carrier Aggregation.
I get pretty good speeds in Vancouver West Side/Kits. Got 73 Mbps now, but have got up to 132 Mbps.

Definitely sounds like a phone or a low signal issue.
>^(I think ill get the s10 for 200$, if i decide to meet the person, is there ways i can see if the battery is degraded alot or if there is any hardware issues?)
You can test the device through Samsung's integrated diagnostics by typing *#0*#
into its dialer.
Additionally, there's an app called Phone INFO ★SAM★ that is specifically designed for Samsung devices; it has an check for refurbishment as well as how many battery cycles the device has been through in its lifetime.
So that last CSC is Sprint.
Ok, use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo, to see what's the active one (it'll also show all the CSC on that particular image/build).
I've been using this app to block suspicious calls and you can set it to automatically block suspicious numbers.
To those who are interested, I tried out the G6-Plus (otherwise known as the XT1926-7). r/https://www.amazon.ca/Motorola-XT1926-7-Factory-Unlocked-Smartphone/dp/B07CHWMYHP/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1535583128&sr=1-4&keywords=G6+Plus&dpID=51hy5ZCFarL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Does this mean that international dual sim card phones can access all of Freedom Mobiles frequency bands (66, 13, 7, and 4)?
Also when I search the Galaxy Note 9 phone why does it say NO CDMA on Amazon?
Does not having NO CDMA matter for Freedom Mobiles network?
I ask this as I am looking into getting a dual sim Galaxy Note 9 but wanted access to all of Freedom Mobiles frequency and features.

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies.
Yup, that'll work for you (when traveling post-pandemic) if the other carriers don't offer eSIM themselves.
If your Pixel 4a doesn't already have it installed, install Google's SIM Manager app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.euicc
I use this for my Samsung Galaxy S9 Android :

Add +1? to whitelist all North American phone numbers. Other spam North American phone numbers get through, but they are few and far between compared to international crap.
Thanks for posting rethcork. Cellmapper is under-used and under-appreciated.. invaluable for sussing out new sites. And for band deployment mapping.

Yup on Android there are quite a few, I use Network Cell Info https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite and Cellmapper https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cellmapper.net.cellmapper
Why not just buy that Apple device directly from the apple store? $600 ISN'T a big cost, and saving up doesn't take ages if you budget accordingly.
Also, I'm going to strongly recommend open camera (link to play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sudenazinc.fullhdcameratwoo), despite it's funny name, it takes full advantage of your Sony XA2's camera and GPU.
If it has a 5 minute limit recording for 4K, it'll effectively bypass it. Just enable the android 5.0 framework and choose the folder on your SD card to save video/photos to. Capture resolution is up to 8K, or your devices limits.
Sadly however, Apple's devices also have a 5 minute recording "limit" for 4K or 8K video (what's the damn point in that?).
Just thought I would provide a useful cool. It beats the original stock camera application by leagues (probably doesn't with the lowlight stuff).
