Google, the search company, provides really, really poor searching in the Play store. Obviously the lack of fine grained searchability is on purpose, however opaque that is. Furthermore, Google took forever to even introduce the Android Wear subheading. Google doesn't provide any search functionality for Wear apps in the Play Store from phone or PC beyond what you have discovered, afaik. Useless.
In addition, it's rather interesting that the third app under the heading "Most usable Android Wear app" is a water drinking app. Really, Google. Under messaging, the one all encompassing Wear messaging app, that incorporates various app messages, Messages for Android Wear isn't even listed under the Messaging heading selection by Google Play Store. Really, Google. Neither has Google enabled feedback on just the Wear part of apps.
The Wear app situation reminds me of Windows Phone, and the large company mentality of "we know best", and "look how many apps you have for Android Wear," when in reality it's poor, the vast majority of Wear apps haven't been updated for years, even Google's own. It's like they don't want this be known, and feedback is unwanted, too. We should waste our time browsing the store for as long as possible. Perhaps the only thing that will get Google to change their ways is Apple Watch success.
I can highly recommend Messages for Android Wear, it's free to download but you will want to pay a couple of dollars to not have a signature on every message you send.

I don't think there's much you can do really. You're limited by what Facebook offers in their app. Someone else might know otherwise.
I can only initiate sms messages with voice, so when I'm driving and need to contact my missus, I fall back to sms.
Edit : haven't tried it but https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages might be worth a look.
I use this (it costs money). I use it for texts and Facebook but it works for other stuff too. You have to rely on text prediction if you want to use it at a decent speed.
I get notifications from Mesaages, but I can't reply or the like to them. However, I use chomp and that does work with notifications on watch fine., I also use Wear Messages on the watch, which does SMS, HO, Whatsapp and others in itself. Full featured SMS client for watch.
There ARE apps that you can use to text with a keyboard, it just doesn't come out of the box.
Like it has been said the only difference in software between Android Wear devices is maybe an additional app or two. Google thankfully has put some standardization rules in place so the manufacturers can't the base experience and updates come out faster.
I really like it. It isn't as elegant as some of the other options but the hardware is great and the GPS and transflective screen make it great for runs and bike rides. It only lacks a speaker so you won't be able to make and take calls with it (you can still do a voice command to call with your phone). Plus, IP68 is great and the microUSB port there's almost always a charging cable available.
If you're prepared for a little leg work.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages still works on the GW4/5, but, it will not automatically install onto it.
You'd need to install this to phone, extract the APK of (APKAnalyser) rename it to a zip, open in a zip manager (7zipper) and pull the WearOS component APK from the res/ folder.
Open up ADB on watch (quick guide here) and sideload the wearable APK to watch.
Grant Wear Messages the Notification Access permission on phone and select WhatsApp from Add Account in the hamburger menu. Configure to show whole conversation.
Voilà.
There are some so-so options: This one is more simple and uses a Bluetooth connection but doesn't work on the galaxy watch 4 but idk if it works on fossil devices: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages And this one is just not really worth the buy until it gets a good few more updates but as far as I can see is the only other good option: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dmrit.whatswatch
There is no official Facebook Messenger app, but https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages will work so long as your watch is connected to your phone and the helper app is installed on your phone.
As Google Assistant is broken on Wear OS 2.x and not released for Wear OS 3.0 (yet), you can't initiate chats or send messages to others without them sending you a message first.
Without a dedicated app on watch, you can only interact with its notifications mirrored from your phone, such as replying messages. Gboard had an update a few months ago and made typing on Wear OS much more better and smoother. You can type with gestures, add special characters and emojis or initiate voice input easily. I think that is sufficient for my daily usage.
Since Wear OS relies on notifications to interact with chats, you can't actually start a chat, but I tried this Messages for Wear OS app that can store your notifications, so I can have a workaround to send messages on-demand. (the downside is it's a paid app and restarting the phone will break everything until you receive another notification)
I would wait for a few months and see if app developers are willing to invest on Wear OS again, hopefully there will be an official WhatsApp and other chat apps in near future :)
Have you heard of these? They might help.

Hello All,
Fossil Gen 5 Carlyle

Just picked up my watch over the weekend. Loving it. It is my very first smart watch, so having to learn all the ins and outs.
One question I have is with notifications. I am getting notifications from apps like Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook and SMS/MMS
But if these notifications contain an image, all I am getting is (for example in messenger): Joe Sent a Photo. I am not getting to see any photos.
I know with whatsapp if they send an image with text it will not show the image, but if they send the photo alone it works.
Am I missing something? I installed Messages for Wear OS (Android Wear) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
which says it will display images but nothing.
I really don't see the point of getting a notification of "Joe sent an Image" and having to open my phone.
Using an app called messages for wear os you can read, reply by voice, typing or set responses, and can send a message as long as you have been chatting already. After a while it resets, so you have to wait for a message to come that you can reply to or send the first message from the phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
I know only this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages&hl=en_US
but is very bugged
it's been a while since i bothered with these, but i think Android Messages app would show multiple msgs in the notification (i don't use android messages on my phone anymore - i prefer republic anywhere)

this app works pretty well, but i just tested/confirmed that only the latest msg shows up in the notification:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
when you tap, it opens the thread instantly though. no waiting for sync. that's half your complaint taken care of at least.
Eventhough it is a paid app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
This bundle adds all the functionalities I wanted android wear to have. Well actually I was disappointed that android was not capable of bringing these features as factory default.
Totally worth it.
I have Wear Messages installed. Lately however, vibrations are totally mute for received messages. Probably because the app on the phone can't be updated due to lack of space.
I had Smart Wear Notification mainly for the sound, but the developer Cyril Preiss had some other app that broke Google's store rules so he was banned. He delegated the app to someone else so that it at least could remain. The app wasn't updated for quite a while and Preiss has since abandoned it.
Well, unfortunately you can only send messages without talking if you use third party apps, unless you have a 2.0 device. I suggest: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages and: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.infiniti.touchone.touchone
You can reply on whatsapp via text with one of the wear keyboards and a keyboard supported third party messaging app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
No need to be on wear 2.0 either(something a lot of people ask whenever we talk aboiut keyboards here)
What do you mean? I've never heard of Android wear requiring root for non-sms apps. Here's another app that does the same thing and maybe doesn't require root.
I found one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
But i didn't like it
I am sorry but it's never gonna happen.
This is a good plan B tough:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
Agree about waiting for Wear 2.0, but this does exist:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
Have you tried Messages for Android Wear? I don't use WhatsApp, but I know this app is supposed to work with it.
You use a third party app that supports sending Hangouts apps. I think this one works well with it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
Is this the same as Messages for Wear OS?
If WearOS, just use Wear Messages - supports multiple SNS apps.
Try using an alternative messages client: Pulse SMS for SMS, Messages for Wear OS for SMS, WhatsApp, Signal, etc. (I still don't recommend it because it only lets you see a certain amount of messages at once) and Informer for (almost) everything else.
Perhaps Messages for Android Wear?
SMS, if it doesn't work, you might try Messages for Android Wear to see if it works for your chosen SMS app.
Language for Android Assistant are only English, German or French. If you use another language setting on your device you'll be using Google Now instead. At least that's what I've found out and how it works on my device.
I used to have English as my language, and with the switch to Google Assistant, the ability to use my native language for voice entry on Android Wear disappeared. I reset the language on the phone to my native language, Android Assistant was automatically turned off and Google Now turned on. Local language started to work again.
You can see more on the issue here
Lately though I've noticed the precision has gone worse, in my case it may have to do with my phone being low on available RAM, though. Could be due to clogged microphone as well. There is a place myactivity.google.com where you can hear what the commands you've just made sound like to your device.
Wear Messages (Free) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
I had that issue as well. Messages for Android Wear solved that one for me. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
p.s. this app exists, but can't vouch for it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
I can't say for sure on the Gear S, but on the 360 this is dependent on your SMS app/apps on the phone. Do you recall what SMS app you were using when you had your Gear S?
There are actually a few that provide keyboards on the Wear app...these keyboards aren't part of the A.droid Wear system, they're part of the Wear app.
Examples:
• https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.exaud.typeitwearsms
• https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michy.wearmessenger
There are lots more, some don't even mention the feature in Play.
There are also some that use a helper app called FlickKey...but it's currently not showing the the Play Store for some reason right now. You can hunt down an APK if interested. That might work with FB Messenger, it not sure.
Last thing...you'll likely want to block Wear notifications from your other/phone SMS app to avoid any confusion or duplicate notifications.
Sorry. I meant messages. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
Jesus Christ. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appfour.wearmessages
THAT APP! NOT THE FUCKING BLUE ONE THAT IS ACTUAL FACEBOOK! THIS ONE WILL LET YOU DO IT! INSTALL IT AND WATCH IT HAPPEN!
