Winter Survival Kit Android or iPhone . Colorado Roads Android or iPhone . Colorado snow chain laws. Keep your cellphone(s) charged up and have a charger for the car or a backup battery. Flashlight or two with some spare batteries. A gallon of water per person. Bring room temp safe, precooked food or snacks but don't eat them (beef jerky, unsalted nuts (saves your thirst a bit), or fruit. A camping shovel. A blanket per person (the aluminum mylar emergency blankets are nice and compact). A tarp or blanket can be used to provide more traction under your wheels if you get stuck. Keep the gas level above a half tank as a reserve. If you get stuck, keep the exhaust clear of snow as well as the windows as long as it is safe to walk around the car. If you use the engine to run the heat, CO poisoning is a real threat if the exhaust can't vent easily.
Drive below posted speeds when the roads are iced or snowy. Allow twice as much distance for all stops. Start slowing for intersections earlier than you normally do. Watch approaching cars to see if they are slowing down or sliding out of control. If you can't tell where the edge of the road is stay nearer the center. Don't stop in areas of deep snow. Stop where you can tell the snow is packed or shallow. If you start to fishtail; shift to a higher gear to reduce power to the wheels (gives you a bit more traction and less slippage), slow down gradually (sudden changes can reduce traction), and lightly brace your hands against your legs to minimize extra inputs (just enough pressure to be steady and notice if you are moving the wheel back and forth unnecessarily).
If you aren't comfortable driving in the weather don't. Swirling snow from a major winter storm can be disorienting.
